Re: [LegacyUG] Independent Cities

2020-02-18 Thread Christopher Seward Sr.

Robin,

I typically indicate those as:

/Baltimore County, Maryland, USA/

This, to me, indicates that they live within a county, but not inside of
any incorporated town or city. I use this if I know for a fact that they
did not live within a city or town, otherwise, if the town is unknown, I
indicate it this way:

/, Baltimore, Maryland, USA/

This shows that I do not know exactly in which city or town they lived.

This is keeping in mind that I work backward on the locations, where the
last term is the Country, then the State, then the County, then the City
or Town.

So, if I knew someone was from Maryland, but didn't know the county or
city, I would note it as:

/, , Maryland, USA/

All of these formats I use have been show to be compatible with Legacy's
Geo database.

Ciao,

Christopher

This has been a very informative discussion. I had no idea there were
independent cities and counties.

Coming from Baltimore, Maryland, I have this in a LOT of my entries.
I ha found that using this format suites my needs in properly
identifying that it is an independent city, but also making it easy to
differentiate it from being an actual place name:

/Baltimore, (Independent City), Maryland, USA/

This puts the term "Independent City" in place of the county, but the
parentheses indicate that it is not the actual name of the county.
This also lets people know that you didn't leave the county field blank.

Hope this helps!

If you use Animap, you can see when each jurisdiction was created. For
older historical records, I like to use the city, county, state, country
that existed at the time the record was created. Animap allows me to do

Re: [LegacyUG] Independent Cities

2020-02-18 Thread Scott Hall
That's pretty much it Carolyn.

For reference, there are only 3 other municipalities that are
independent of counties outside Virginia -- Baltimore (since 13 May 1851),
Saint Louis (since 1876) and Carson City, Nevada (have to look that one up,
but it happened in the late 20th century).

Virginia's cities were granted independence when the state constitution was
revised in 1871.

I don't know the "official" answer, but this is fairly rare (in Virginia, the
local government entity is either a city or a county, but cities are not part
of counties).  Using the normal practice of "city, county, state, country", I
would put the "[city name],,Virginia, United States".
Similarly, if you had a Virginia County instead, I would put ",[county name],

Re: [LegacyUG] Independent cities

2016-06-14 Thread Trevor Carlson
It is a city that is not within another municipal or county jurisdiction.
Several in Canada like this too. Washington D.C. is an example where it isn't
even in a state.

I use 'City of' as my placeholder. Works well.

Thanks,

2016-06-14 Thread Eliz Hanebury
I use the place holder so I know I am dealing with an Independent
city. From Wikipedia

There are 41 independent cities in the United States. Of these, 38 are
in Virginia. They are called 'independent' because they are not in the
territory of any county or counties. Independent cities in Virginia
may, however, serve as county seats for neighboring counties.

The three independent cities outside of Virginia are Baltimore,
Maryland; St. Louis, Missouri; and Carson City, Nevada.
I have a lot of family in Virginia

Re: [LegacyUG] Independent Cities issue

2014-09-28 Thread Ron Taylor
The problem is that the County Verifier and GeoDatabase were developed by two
different programmers/companies and they were never coordinated to produce
equal results as is evident in the independent cities. Also, GeoDatabase is
based on the current location whereas County Verifier is trying to define the
location for the date involved. I look forward to the day when a specified
longitude and latitude can display the location name based on date and language.

Thanks Ron,

The GeoDatabase (GeoDB.gdb) appears that it is written in Access. I have tried
to open it to add my own counties, to solve the issue as Margaret speaks of,
however, it is password protected. Legacy doesn't specifically allow one to
ignore an unrecognized county, though one can click on OK and the warning will
go away for that instance.

2014-07-25 Thread Paula Ryburn
William, You might check the archives for threads where these old locations in
other counties or other states issues were discussed.  As I remember, the
preferred method (by those on this list) is to record it as it existed at the
time of the event.  So, for your old WV locations, it would be VA--and aren't
those just warning messages?  And if you are trying to map in a chronology or
something, I seem to remember you could enter it with WV originally to get it
pinned (Geo Code database?) and then change it back to VA.  Like I said, you
might search the archives for old location names or something similar--to get
the detail versions of what I've just mentioned.  I haven't run into any of
these, so I don't have first-hand knowledge.  --Paula

[LegacyUG] Independent Cities

2014-07-23 Thread Margaret Gagliardi
Would someone please tell me how I should record Petersburg, Virginia? It
is an independent City, without a County.

Thank you very much.

2014-07-23 Thread Margaret Gagliardi
Thanks so much for the ideas. I will try them. I always use VA if it is
before West Virginia became a state. Once it became a state I use WV. I
know those counties, so for me it works well. However if you are using GPS
etc. I would put it as WV with (VA) after it. I don't know if that would
confuse the GPS or not, but you might try it.

Re: [LegacyUG] Independent Cities

2014-07-23 Thread William Hoff
I've been using only West Virginia and noting with the location that prior to
June 20, 1863 it was VA. With county edit I then get an error MSG that the
county did not exist. Guess I just have to live with that. Being from WV there
is a lot of this though.

I use IC ... or lie and put it in the county it would be in
if it weren't an IC so others can tell at-a-glance which
part of Va it's in. I mean, Petersburg, Roanoke, and
Winchester are all ICs but knowing that they're not
next-door neighbors can be useful.

RE: [LegacyUG] Independent Cities

2014-07-23 Thread Brian L. Lightfoot
I noticed a few weeks/months ago that FamilySearch was referencing the
independent cites for example as “Petersburg, Petersburg City, Virginia, United
States”. Thus, Richmond becomes “Richmond, Richmond City, Virginia, United
States”, etc.
