[LegacyUG] Individual Information

2013-08-27 Thread Tony Rolfe
For what it is worth, I have three events - Birth Registration, Death
Registration and Marriage Registration.

The description contains "vol xx, page yyy". The date is the last month
of the Quarter (Mar, Jun, Sep or Dec) plus the year and the place is the
registration district. RD locations have long name including county and
country (Chelmsford registration district, Essex, England) and a short
name of just the district.

The event sentence might read:

His birth was registered during the quarter ended Jun 1898 at the
Chelmsford registration district with GRO reference vol 4a, page 123

For the date, I use the year if the registration was Jun, Sep or Dec,
but "Abt Year" for March registrations.

The more that's visible, the less that's legible.

The answer to many of these "fields" to be displayed is to use Cursor
popups, often referred to as "Tool Tips" or Hover.

One line of a customized set of fields that displays when cursor rolls over
them.

Well that's my thoughts,

Jay

I'd also put the GRO ref as the Desc but I think I'd be happy with how
it displays. As far as I know you can't change the display order.
Would you like it better if you put the GRO ref in Notes? Or I suppose
you could put District and Reference (in that order) into the Desc field
and not use the Place field.

Re: [LegacyUG] Individual Information

2013-08-27 Thread Ward Walker
It seems to me that if one knows when a birth or death was registered, but
not when it actually happened, then the birth or death date should be
recorded with the 'Before' notation (one of the acceptable date formats). If
you do that, is it not adequate to keep the birth and death fields as-is on
the Family view, and keep the registration data in events that are only a
click away?

I think your first problem, as such, is that the Birth, Death and Marriage
Registrations are primarily a UK thing. What you're asking for is a change
to
what is fundamentally a US-centric product. It took some time to get Legacy
to
accept the UK registration quarters as dates and even longer for them to be
used
in some of the internal date and period calculations.

Set them up as Registration events in which the FreeBMD information can be
recorded and sourced if you like. Then if it's the first date enter it so
that
it appears on the Family view. You should probably set up separate locations
for
the Registration Districts as well. You need to distinguish between the RD
and a
town of the same name. Later, as you get more accurate information, enter it
initially as an Alt. event and swap it with the less accurate birth/death or
marriage information. The fact that you now have two events that are
effectively
the same is nothing to worry about. Simply mark what is now the Alt. event
as a
private event.

If we expand the existing 5 fields in family view to 7 that might mean
that some major part of the existing 3 generations on the family view
would disappear, probably the parents. There is only so much real
estate available on your display.

We are happy to consider suggestions for new features.

In Legacy 6.0 and 7.0 you can suggest a new feature by clicking on the
link on the Legacy Home Tab Support Section

I don't see any problem. There must be *many* of us who have created
custom Events. I would just be creating 2 more custom Events; I might
be the only person ever to create them or some other people might also
choose to do so.

The only change to the product that I would be asking for is the ability

I prefer to keep "Alt Events" for situations where there is conflicting
information about the same data. In the case of Registrations, we are
not talking about conflicting information, we are talking about
additional information.

I read that and was thinking "But we really need separate fields for
Birth Registration and Death Registration, not just labels" and then, of
course, I realized that there is nothing stopping us creating a
Registration Event and using that, instead of putting Registration
information into the Birth & Death fields as I have been doing up to now.

Up to now, when I don't know a Birth/Death date I have entered the
Registration date, eg March Q 1850, and updated this to the actual date
when I discover it, leaving the Registration Source attached. Now have
to think about whether I want to update everything to accommodate
Registration Events!

One snag is only being able to display 5 fields on Family View. 7 would
be ideal: Birth, Birth Registration, Baptism/Christening, Death, Death
Registration, Burial/Cremation, FamilySearchID.

[LegacyUG] Individual Information

2013-08-26 Thread Berntsen Family
Hi
I would like to see incorporated in v8 the chance to change the BORN & DIED
titles as with BURIED to CREMATED so as to reflect where the information came
from. A lot of people use registration quarters as their date, I would like
the chance to change the BORN or DIED to BIRTH or DEATH Registration.
That will show that you do not have the correct date of the event, but when it
was registered, as some people could register months later.

Since people can have more than one in a lifetime, I usually add it as
it is from the census info as one event called Residence i.e.
date/location/occupation. That obviously wouldn't work if you want to
separate out the occupation in which case it needs to be a separate
Event, spanning whatever the dates are. How many times do we know,

Not on the 'Individual's Information' page as such. You can always add
one or more Events named Occupation, which will give a chronological
view of what the person did at various times (census, marriage, death,
baptisms of kids ...)

On the 'Family' tab, you can change any of the default labels (Born,
Bapt, Died, Bur etc) but I prefer to change the 'Death Cau' to give the
occupation. To do this:-

a) Right-click on one of the labels - gives Customise Display
b) Click on the ... button for the last label - gives a list of fields
c) Select Event - gives Master Event Definition List
d) Select Occupation - DONE!

[LegacyUG] individual information - occupation

2010-05-20 Thread mike bridgeford

Hi Guys,

On the individual information page, there is a lot of useful information
about the individual, which at a glance tells you the most important events.

However, I find that I consistently wish to know the persons occupation. Was
this individual a tailor or a shoemaker?

Is there any way that I can insert the occupation of an individual on the
'one-page view' - Individual Information.
