  Kirsten,

I participated in the beta testing of Families for iPhone
and one of the few things it cannot do besides print is
display relationships. Other than that it is very capable,
excellent program that I can recommend very highly.

I testing Families on the Android right now so it's too early for me to
comment specifically on that but the idea of access a PC remotely is a good
suggestion. Beyond VNC apps, you can also look at services such as
LogMeIn.com. I use the free version to access and remotely my home computer
from a variety of locations.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy and iPad?

2010-12-30 Thread Laird
Hi Kirsten,
I feel like you can use Legacy with your i-pad as a VNC viewer, Virtual Network
Computing. Legacy would actually be running on your Windows desktop computer
which communicates with the ipad. I have used this setup (free version) with my
laptop and desktop remotely over the internet using WinXP. Your can also do the
same on a local wi-fi network in your home or internet.
RealVNC $30 + iPad app $10 = $40

http://vnc.com/vnc/index.html
http://vnc.com/products/iphone/index.html

==
They have a free version you could play with if you have a laptop (pretend it's
the ipad).
http://vnc.com/products/download.html

With this kind of setup you need not be concerned about trusting your data to a
$15 Families application on the ipad. Your data is actually on your PC using
Legacy, you are just operating it remotely. Sort of like setting in a comfy
chair using a remote keyboard, mouse and display.

But if you want to type with the iPad, it's difficult unless you use a separate
keyboard accessory [I've tried the "keyboard on screen" on my brother's and
it's awkward]. I'll stick to my netbook.

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy and iPad?

2010-12-30 Thread Garl Satterthwaite
Kirsten,

I have been using Families on my ipad and iphone since it was released and it
is great to always have my data at my fingertips. I have almost 28,000 names in
my database along with sources and supporting information. While Familes seems
to work great, I personally do not trust any program to modify my Legacy data
without error. I use Families for reference, but I do not try to export back to
Legacy on my desktop!

It sounds like that's the option but I'm pretty hesitant to plunk down $600 for
an iPad that would depend on a $15 application to be successful, especially
since that application is at version 1.0. Hopefully someone will respond who
uses Legacy on an iPad via Families and tell us whether it's simple and
full-featured in real life. I see a list of what Families *can* do; what is
there that it *doesn't* do--short of the obvious like print?

Subject: [LegacyUG] Legacy and iPad?

My totally tech sons and daughter-in-law visited for a week at Christmas and
of course there were iPads everywhere. I'm s jealous I can't stand it,
but I'm not about to give up Legacy. Most of my research is online rather
than at libraries or archives, but I'd love to be able to sit on the patio
or at the local coffee shop and clean up my location list, sources, notes,
and do some searching. Does anyone use a Windows desktop as their main
computer (with Legacy) and sync it somehow with an iPad? If so, how is it
done and what is required? Is it a satisfactory arrangement for a
non-technical person?

Kirsten

2010-12-30 Thread Cheryl Rothwell
With a less expensive netbook you could just have your Legacy program
with you. But Legacy would not be the only thing you used your iPad
for. :-)

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy and iPad?

2010-12-30 Thread Kirsten Bowman
Geoff:

It sounds like that's the option but I'm pretty hesitant to plunk down $600 for
an iPad that would depend on a $15 application to be successful, especially
since that application is at version 1.0. Hopefully someone will respond who
uses Legacy on an iPad via Families and tell us whether it's simple and
full-featured in real life. I see a list of what Families *can* do; what is
there that it *doesn't* do--short of the obvious like print?
