I have been working with Legacy since version 3.0. I have had computers not
wanting to start, files being corrupted or accidentally deleting a picture. If
you value your pics, and the hours you spent, backing up to the cloud or a
removable hard drive is a must. You realize that backing up to the computer you
are working on when the dog knocked the laptop onto the floor and now it won't
come on. In my opinion the cloud is the best because I have a drawer of nice
external hard drives that say there is a problem and the drive needs to be
reformatted. I have 32,000 pictures and I back up to both an SD card and to
Dropbox and the Legacy Cloud.

Hope this helps.

Thank you Cathy. I always back up in 3 places – desperate not to lose anything
and I have had drives that just go blank.

The query was about whether I actually need to keep them in my Pictures folder
and the Legacy Media Folder. Your answer regarding Options 6.2 is what I need.

Thank you so much

June,

It is always necessary to back up all your data including pictures off your
computer and best practice is to backup to at least 3 different places.

If you are asking whether you need to copy into the default Legacy Media folder
when you link an image in Legacy, then the answer is you haven't set Options >
Customise 6.2 to your own default folder for media. When you have, you won't be
asked to copy when you link from ...\Pictures\Legacy\ or a sub-folder of it.

Re: [LegacyUG] Media Files - unlinked, but where do I find the item ?

2019-01-20 Thread Dave Naylor

Hello Chris,

If all else fails... one trick I've used for a few things like this is
to generate a gedcom of your database. Obviously for this time you need
to include graphic links. Then open the gedcom with a text editor and
do a Search for part of the filename. The line with that filename will
begin with a number, and the lines immediately above it with a lower
number will indicate the item that's linked to the filename.

This trick also comes in handy when searching for specific text that you
know exists somewhere in a Legacy file.

Hope this helps.

Cheers! -- Dave N.

The file is linked to one of the sources you have for Joseph Edgar
Swann, it is not linked directly to him so you will not find it in his
media Gallery. Open his attached sources and you will find the missing
media linked to one of those. Hopefully the source names will give you
the clue as to which one has the missing media.

Re: [LegacyUG] Media Files - unlinked, but where do I find the item ?

2019-01-20 Thread Chris Hill

Hi Chris

Given that you know the file name that Legacy thinks it - London
England Electoral Registers 18471965(50).jpg - you now need to find out
where it is.

Normally with those it is because I have renamed the file but left
it the the same folder. That gives we a couple of options. From the
Media error dialog, you can just do a manual search, starting in the
same folder, but obviously you wander around until you find it.

Not easy, so it would be better to go outside of Legacy and let
Windows look for it. Start searching anywhere in the SWANN Media folder
and downwards, and try to use a match key for part of it. You could also
put a date range on the search to limit when it was last modified.

Hopefully, you have slightly changed it or just moved it elsewhere.
Also, have a look in the Recycle Bin in case you deleted it.

Regards

Chris

I don't think you can get that list. :(

What you can get is a list of attached media and who it is attached to.
If you save that as a PDF it is searchable.
Reports - Other Reports - Scrapbook OR View - Scrapbook

Choose your options and then the Print Media File List button.

[LegacyUG] Media Files

2015-11-16 Thread Richard Yardley
Regarding media files: I have both my graphic (jpg) and document (pdf) files
in one folder called Media.

To keep things tidy, I want to create a Document folder and move all my pdf
files into this new folder.

Will the Media finder and re-linker work on pdf files?

Also, is there a way to show document files which are not linked to an event
or person as it is possible to do with graphic files in Picture Centre?

Thanking you,

Richard Yardley

Yes the Media Relinker will find the pdf files if you move them,
provided you don't rename them. I suggest you make your new folder in
your Media folder. It's best to keep all attached media in one folder
structure.

No to the second, you can't see which pdfs are not attached.
You can get a list of all media attached from View - Scrapbook - Print
Media File List.
Not what you want but perhaps better than nothing.

Cheers
