[LegacyUG] Using Legacy for recording atDNA and Gedmatch.com for Ancient Heritage

2018-01-21 Thread J.M. "Jay" Ingalls
I add people who match my wife's atDNA or mtDNA or my mtDNA or yDNA or
atDNA test results to Legacy. I add info like "DNA Chr 1 Match to Jay"
to the "Name Suffix Field".

Then I use the Legacy Search, Find, Detailed Search, and search for

PRIMARY CONDITION

Look for Whom: Individual

Where to Look: Suffix

How to Look: Contains

What to Look For: Jay

SECOND CONDITION

Look for Whom: Individual

Where to Look: Suffix

How to Look: Contains

What to Look For: DNA

THIRD CONDITION

Look for Whom: Individual

Where to Look: Suffix

How to Look: Contains

What to Look For: 1

This finds all the people with the matching info. Lists all with 1, 11,
12, etc,

Works better for Chromosome 21 and similar numerals . Any suggestions
on how to eliminate 12, 12, etc. from my results would be appreciated.

Once I get the list, I can print it out using Options, Print. I have the
print List Print Options set as:

Surnames, Given Names

Sex

Born

Died

Spouse 1

Spouse 2

Relationship

Then I can either print the list or work from the screen list to check
for segment matches with me at FamilyTreeDNA.com or Gedmatch.com

Then I contact the closest matches, especially if I find common
ancestors in their ancestry data.

Works better than nothing!

If you are worried about your "ancient heritage", I suggest you add your
atDNA data to Gedmatch.com for free and use the tools there. It is also
worth while to add your gedcom file=pedigree chart to Gedmatch.com.
There are many tools you can use for free to check for your possible
ancient ancestry. And many tools for looking for cousins. I do recommend
removing dates and places for living people from your gedcom file.

And remember, paper trail genealogy will often be wrong no matter how
many records you find or where you find the records. Before penicillin
and more recent modern drugs, many parents and children died from
disease and the neighbors or relatives raised the children who lived,
often with no "adoption" records. There were many other reasons for
children and grandchildren never knowing who their parents or
grandparents really were!

This has been discussed before and, as I remember, the answer
is that the autosomal results are too massive to include in
Legacy. Plus, they would be difficult to interpret in Legacy.
Putting the lengthy raw results into Legacy would swell the

Good questions. Maybe I can offer a little insight. All three will help you
learn how to best use Legacy, it just depends on how you learn best. And
none of them duplicate each other.

The training videos work your way through the program - explaining the fine
details of how to do what.

The Unofficial Guide is an organized compilation of years of tips and
tricks from our Legacy News blog.

Legacy Unlocked takes an actual research problem and walks you through,
step-by-step, how to apply the research to using Legacy. Specific examples
include a death certificate, census, obituary, tombstone, land, and
marriage records.

If I had to narrow it down to two - I would recommend the Unlocked and the
training videos.

Earlene:

You might try these 2 things:

1. In my use of VMWare and Parallels, It works the best if you set the
virtual machine up to NOT share files with the Mac. The VMs use basically
network drive locations for the VM (e.g., //psf/user/Documents/...).
Network drives that have a // as the beginning of the drive location is
just not in the L8 vocabulary.

2. Open up L8 with no file and go to Options Customize 6. Locations.
Change the Default location for 6.1, 6.2 6.3 to the normal location in
the Windows environment
6.1 would be: C:\Users\Earlene\Documents\Legacy Family Tree Beta
8\Data\
6.2 would be: C:\Users\Earlene\Documents\Legacy Family Tree Beta
8\Media\
6.3 would be: C:\Users\Earlene\Documents\Legacy Family Tree Beta
8\_AppData\Temp\

After doing steps 1 2, then try to open your L8 database (assuming you
have copied it to the location in 6.1 above).

When you run the Tools Media Relinker to get all of your pictures located,
make sure you just have drive C: selected to search. The VMs may have
several other network drives that L8 doesn't recognize.

Good luck.

Here is part of an email I saved from Sherry in Technical Support stating that
Legacy 8 does not work with Crossover.

Crossover isn't free. It's the supported version of WINE and there's a charge

WINE is free but unsupported. http://www.winehq.org/

[LegacyUG] Using Legacy in the Cloud

In spite of my security software which is AVG, twice in the last 8 months
my PC has been infected by a virus. The cure is to wipe the disc clean,

My web site and my gmail account, for example, are not impacted at all by

[LegacyUG] Using Legacy V6 and V7.5 on the same computer

One of the nicest features of V6.0, and one I used very frequently, was that
I could compile almost instantaneously the relationships between two

like to know if and how I can use both versions 6.0 and 7.5 on the same
computer running Windows XP. This way I could once in a while convert my V6.

V7.5 in a different directory on the same computer and hope everything will
work fine?

Has anyone tried this before? Or is there a previous discussion you could
refer me to in the archives?

Thanks for your help.

RE: [LegacyUG] Using Legacy V6 and V7.5 on the same computer

2012-07-10 Thread Jacques E Decarie
Hi Tim,

Thanks for this quick response.

I would like to use V6 as the default.

I now have V6 installed in C:\Legacy and will install V7 in C:\Legacy7.

Will the installation of Legacy V7 overwrite anything in the Windows
registry, etc. that I should worry about?

Thanks.

2012-07-10 Thread Tim Rosenlof
Jacques,

I have no problem with multiple versions. I do however force my
locations by renaming the Legacy7Setup.exe to LegacyNew.exe

The install will then ask you where to install it.

I won't lead you astray on this.

My questions - what is Wine windows emulator version 1.1.44
AND HOW DO I change the default path for

Re: [LegacyUG] Using Legacy on an Imac with Snow Leopard

2012-04-24 Thread Leon Chapman
Sandra:

Just buy Parallels or VMWare and install Windows 7 and then you can
install Legacy under Windows. Another option is to use BootCamp
(Free) that comes with the Mac to boot up in Windows. Paralles or
VMWare will cost about $50 and a copy of Windows will cost about $100.

Legacy runs just fine on my MacBook Pro using Parallels.
It also runs just fine using VMWare.

Parallels and VMWare let you run Virtual Machines (Windows) using the
Mac operating system.

I am surprised you are still running Snow Leopard. OS X Lion is the
current release of Mac OS. Apple is going to release OS X Mountain
Lion this summer which means you will be 2 generations behind in your
operating system.

Re: [LegacyUG] Using Legacy

2011-10-24 Thread Sherry/Support
Please no pictures or attachments to the LUG list and especially not animations.

HTML is ok, but not with graphics.

We have a lot of listers still on dial-up or who have metered service,
which means they either pay by the amount of data they download or are
limited in how much they can download. Graphics only add to that load,
so please be considerate of others when on mailing lists and reserve
the cute stuff for personal emails.

I'm glad you're finding Legacy easy to use! Plus there are so many
resources for help to learn new features or if you have problems with
the database (check out the items in the Support section of the Legacy

 Hi.

I've just subscribed to this site and I wish I had the benefit of all this
knowledge when I first encountered this problem. I finally hacked the
 following solution.

I bought a Trancend 250Gb StoreJet, which I now use exclusively for my
genealogical research and I use it as my primary disk. So when I switch
computers, I simply plug in my Trancend and all my data is where it always
was. When it comes to backing up, I do alternate backups to either computers
local drives, thereby maintaining a triple backup. You could do a monthly
backup to the less used computer and regular backups to the most used
computer, or any combination. I also use the Trancend as my primary store
for all my research documents, again with the same backup policies.

 Hope this helps.

Re: [LegacyUG] Using Legacy on two computers

Hi Sandy,

not overwrite that copy with less information, but could import just the
updates you had worked on the other computer. It was in the monthly emails
but I cant seem to find it.

Do you mean the Legacy News newsletter? Its archive is at
http://news.legacyfamilytree.com/legacy_news/archives.html - perhaps you
can find it there.

Another thought has occurred to me, reading all the posts today. You
could have your master file on a jump drive, and whenever you access it
backup to the computer that you're using - and if on that computer you
directed the backup to the Dropbox folder, it would be automatically
copied to your other computer when it was online, so both computers
would have all the backups - if one crashed and was unrecoverable, the
latest backup would still be safe on the other machine.

Kind Regards,
Wendy

Re: [LegacyUG] Using Legacy on Mac

2010-10-30 Thread Robert Runion
I run Legacy on my iMAC using VMware Fusion and Windows 7. As noted earlier,
all my stuff is in the Windows side of the system; however, there is a feature
in Fusion that you might explore - Unity. It is some sort of feature that
allows crossfeed, but I have no idea how it works. You might try talkign to
the VMware techies. I had it working one day, but it got in the way of doing
genealogy and I haven't revisited it.

 Vickie:

I don't believe that you can do this. It's a Windows issue,
I've been told. Mac operating systems can read
windows-formatted drives, but Windows operating systems
aren't able to recognize Mac-formatted drives. So if
you are using parallels, or boot camp (or whatever) when you
are using the Mac OS, you can see both sides of the
partition, but when using the Windows OS you can only see
 the Windows side.

So, if you are running Legacy, you need to be using the
Windows OS, so the best solution is to keep all of your
genealogy files on the Windows side of the partition so that
you can access them from other side.

 Hope that helps,
 Dave

Re: [LegacyUG] Using Legacy on Mac

2010-10-30 Thread Scott Hall
It can be done.  The challenge is I'm not sure how.

I also run Legacy on Windows (XP) via VMWare Fusion.  My files are all
on the Mac side -- even the data file.

I have a network drive that I can see on the Windows side called
Shared Folders that takes me to the Mac side.  I note that when I
click on most of the folders, no programs appear -- this is the
Windows can't see Mac issue mentioned above. But I can access the
Legacy files.

Even though I can't help you figure out how, I assure you it is
possible. I'd suggest looking at the manuals or help files for VMware
Fusion, or perhaps someone else here can better assist.

Good luck.

The thread(s) on FTM vs Legacy have me curious how others integrate
Legacy and other online programs such as Ancestry.com (which I keep
thinking about signing up for).

*Even if FTM is adware for Ancestry, do you still make use of
Ancestry?
(Sort of wondering if the, uh, frustration? on the other threads is
only toward FTM, or Ancestry in general?)

* Are there other online options that partner better with Legacy
(commercial or roll your own site)?

*Any tips and tricks to minimize the double entry?
