RE: [LegacyUG] Using Windows Sync (w/Windows 7, 32-bit) to copy my database

2010-06-29 Thread Gavin Nicholson
Hi Pat,

Yes I use Live Sync to synchronise between my netbook and main PC. Live Sync, I
believe, is better than some other programs people are suggesting (eg. Dropbox)
because you can synchronise any folder on one computer with any other folder on
any other computer (or any number of computers for that matter). For simplicity
I setup my two computers identically (ie. Program Files/Legacy/Data on both)
but as I mentioned you don't have to.

In order for the synchronisation to work both computers must be on, there is no
storage on the internet.

You also need to ensure you don't have Legacy open on both at the same time.
Nothing bad will happen but you will lose any changes you made on one of them
because it can't merge changes. You end up with a number of duplicate files
with the computer name tacked onto the end so you can then choose which one to
use as Live Sync doesn't know which one you actually want.

As I said though it works fantastically for me. I am sync'ing hundreds of files
(all my images and PDF'ed references) some of which are over 20MB.

Good luck with it.
Gavin...

Hi All,

I would like to use Windows Sync (w/Windows 7, 32-bit) to copy my
Legacy database from one computer to another. Has anyone done this?
If so, how did you set it up and did it work okay?

Yes, I know I can use a thumb drive, etc., and that may be easier and
less confusing.

Thanks

I use Dropbox to share Reports, multimedia etc with a family group of
genealogists and I highly recommend it. It is very easy to set up and
use.

https://www.dropbox.com/

At the moment, I am using an external drive to carry my Legacy and all
related files backwards and forwards between my computer and my sister's
as I frequently work on her machine but I intend to set up Dropbox on
her computer so I can keep Legacy synced that way.

RE: [LegacyUG] Using Windows Sync (w/Windows 7, 32-bit) to copy my database

2010-06-29 Thread Doug
As I'm still on XP I use GoodSync its great, simply create instructions to
synchronise a to b, or b to a, or both-ways.
I have 2 x 1 Terabyte drives synchronising and a 500 Mbyte external drive
synchronising my Music, Photos and Family Tree, as well I sync smart chips. In
fact you can sync any folders or CD/DCD.
Years ago I lost all my info when the hard drive failed so this pedantic use of
three drives.

Windows Live Sync is a App - I think part of the Windows Live group
that comes with Windows 7. It's easy to set it up to sync folders
like music, documents, etc but I'm not sure how (or if) it can be used
to sync the data folder in Legacy. I just wanted to know if anyone
had used it to keep their Legacy database on 2 or more computers in
sync and if so, how did they set it up and what did they think of the
results. I know that the program Dropbox can be used as could thumb
drives, etc.

If there is no one out there who is using Windows Live Sync for the
syncing of their database, how about those of you who are using
Dropbox sharing the path needed to sync the computers together.

Thanks.

Here is the path that I use to keep my Legacy Data on several computers and
iPhones:

C:\Users\\Documents\My Dropbox\Legacy Data\

I set up Legacy to default to the above directory for editing and saving my
Legacy data files.
I also have a Pictures directory as follows:

C:\Users\\Documents\My Dropbox\Legacy Data\Pictures\

I store all the picture files there and point Legacy to that directory.
Whenever I add a new picture it is updated everywhere I have a dropbox.

It works great and and I always have an updated copy on my iPhone and all of
my computers automatically.

Dropbox.com provides 2GB of free storage -- should be adequate for most
people.

Windows Live Sync should work in a similar manner, but I doubt if it works
to sync with the iPhone.
