Re: [LegacyUG] Web pages - fonts

2018-06-25 Thread Gordon Findlay
Yes - for this option it doesn't read the Legacy database at all, but rather
the HTML generated by Legacy.

And if they were to get mucked about with, they can be recreated easily enough.
Several of the other tools have been integrated in recent versions of Legacy
anyway.

Thanks for the heads-up. I've run it over my web pages, and it has produced a
CSS file which looks quite manageable.

I am using the latest version of Legacy and still use LTools for the web / css
option - works fine. Obviously I always make sure I have a backup before using
it and I don't use it for other options, but definitely OK with this one.

Thanks everyone for the discussion on LTools.

I'd already seen it - and rejected it. It was designed for earliier versions of
Legacy, as people have said. and since the database structure is now different,
that rules it out for me.

Hi

As a retired IT Manager, programmer and developer I would agree that LTools
would be a risk. Looking at his website, as far as I can tell, nothing has been
updated since Aug 2014 apart from one reference to a patch to LTools in Aug
2015. That would suggest that he is no longer doing any development.

That is because it is dependent on its developer being totally aware of the
internal structure of the Legacy database, in terms of the underlying tables,
the fields within them and the way that they are linked, along with any
additional files that Legacy might create, and I have never understood why they
are not within the main database. That structure is, of course, totally under
the control of the Legacy developers and presumably subject to copyright rules,
until Legacy make them publicly available.

Having said that, I have used M/S Access, on a duplicate copy of my
database, to view some of the fields and links in order to resolve some very
odd issues. Using LTools or Access to make changes to the data is possible, so
long as the user, and LTools developer, KNOWS exactly what they are changing
and why. There are very good reasons to do this type of modification since
there may be no functionality built into Legacy capable of making changes to
some of the data, especially with a need to make changes generically across a
subset of the data.

With time and effort I could generate an equivalent to LTools based on the
current version of Legacy, but then that would need ongoing support as Legacy
modifies the system, and would probably be in breach of copyright. As such, a
program like that should be developed by the Legacy developers, and not by its
users, and should be built into the main Legacy program.
