Re: [LegacyUG] check all picture locations - am I doing this correctly?

I switched to 'not linking' by making my filing system do more. I made
it into a PowerPoint presentation and, even if the whole thing is not
your cup of tea, you may find something there to get to a different way
of looking at this.

I know... submit a suggestion.

At least in the future I will rename in picture center first, then only have to
do citations individually.

In the meantime, I will ponder what someone else posted: Not linking anything
into Legacy... or at least linking less.

Legacy can't read your mind and doesn't know how you rename a file.
The lilnks to the files are stored in the database using the file name
and path as it is at the time you link it.

Legacy can, however, find pictures that have been *moved*.

If you change the file name through Picture Center, then the name is
changed in the database, but not if you change it outside of Legacy.

Sadly, you'll have to manually relink each file that has had a name change.

[LegacyUG] check all picture locations - am I doing this correctly?

2012-10-03 Thread Tony Rolfe
If you change a folder name, all you have to do is go into Legacy and
try to load a file from the old folder name. Legacy can't find it, then
either browse for it yourself, or let Legacy do it and then all files in
that folder will be found.

If you are changing a file name, the best way is to use Pic Centre.
Browse to the folder containing the file and then rename using Picture
Centre's rename feature. It is horrible, becaus you have to type the
whole file name, but you only have to do it once (for each file) as all
references will be renamed. Actually that isn't quite true since, if
you have the file actually referenced in the source clipboard then that
stays with the old name.

If you change a filename outside of legacy, then each reference needs to
be corrected one by one.

I think what you're doing is how it works. Unfortunately. That's why I
don't link files. To Legacy or to anything. If I'm looking for a file
I'd rather find it in its original location, whatever that is and
whenever. Thankfully Windows can be searched. Linking files is a
thankless task and when you've had enough you'll stop.

[LegacyUG] check all picture locations - am I doing this correctly?

2012-10-02 Thread Paula Ryburn
I have changed the names on a few files for one particular family, but some of
them have been linked in several times, so this is getting tedious.

I went in Customize > Locations > Test All Multimedia Paths and am testing
locations... I chose not to create a list; rather, to have each one pop up to be
corrected.
I am choosing to "Browse for the File" myself, but the error pops up for EVERY
file not found... *even after I have selected the renamed file.

Isn't the system supposed to "know" that this is the new name and correct all
paths to it? Am I doing this incorrectly?

Or does that only work if you renamed the folder?

It's been so long since I've done this or seen a discussion on here that I have
forgotten.
