What part do you want to turn off? The messages you receive are what the LUG is
about. To stop them you need to unsubscribe. See below where I have highlighted

You obviously ARE a subscriber (whether you wanted to be or not) or you
wouldn't be getting the mails. You need to do as Chris Hill said.

At the bottom of these messages is a link described as "manage your

Follow that link, enter your email address at the bottom and click the
"edit your subscription" button, then follow the instructions towards the
end.

Please, this is simple and I have already answered it for you. Please read

I think maybe this answers my question.

All my Master Sources have titles which indicate the type of Source -
for example "Census - England 1851 or Baptism Records - Kent or Book -
Burke's Peerage" - so it would be very easy for me to find and tag any
particular type.

Have you set up your Source in such a way that it is easy to identify
all the Book Sources? If so, tag all those Sources in the Master Source
list, then go to Reports>Other and select the Source Citations report.
One of the items on the "Include" tab is "Only Tagged Sources."

Gene,

I don't think you can.
This is a field available for Basic Style sources. If filled in it gives
you a different Source Assistant. I don't think it does anything else
and I see I rarely fill it in.
From View - Master Lists - Source Type you can get a list of
individuals that use that particular source type but that's not what you
want.
There are suggestions logged for being able to search sources more
easily but I don't think they reference this field. Put in a suggestion
for an enhancement to the Source Citation report.

Naomi,

One thing to think about is how you might use the Show List feature. If
you are too much of a lumper, it's pretty useless - but the same goes if
you are an extreme splitter. For some sources I'm a lumper and for other
source types I'm a splitter - mainly because of how I might want to use
Show List and then turn that list into a search list.

Different people deal with this in different ways.

A lot will depend on which sources apply to your data, and how
much
information you have from each source.

For example, if you have a very large number of families from
a small area,
you may want to make that small area (eg Putnam Country, Ohio)
a master
source, but if you have family scattered over a wider area,
you might want to
make the master source the 1920 US Census, and put Putnam
County into the
details.

My own preference is the latter, but I still make exceptions
for some things.

One reason for my preference is database architecture, which
is a bit
technical, but still worth considering.

Legacy is a relational database, and one of the rules of
relational database
is to avoid duplication. If you make Putnam County Ohio and
Monroe County
Michigan your master sources, then you have to enter the 1920
US Census
twice, and more if there are other counties. All those entries
take up space
on your disk.

There are 3,141 counties in the United States. If you had 2
people in each in
the 1920 Census, that would be 3141 Master Sources and 6282
detail sources.
If, however, you lump the entries for the 1920 Census into one
master source,
that's 3140 master source records.

But if your people are distributed over 5 counties, then 5
Master sources
might be better.

I am a splitter. My census records are organized State, county, Year with
the rest in the details. i.e. Pennsylvania, Lancaster County - 1850
It would drive me crazy to just to 1850 Census.

I think I was a lumper, LOL. I noticed in the attempts at exporting my
GEDCOM a while ago that I showed 125 Master Sources
with 18,892 citations.
I have read and looked up the topic so much the past few days that I am
more confused than ever. Too much of a good thing.
I will give it some thought and maybe find a happy medium.

Re: [LegacyUG] Master Sources vs

2017-03-10 Thread Tessa Keough
that is the eternal "lumper" vs "splitter" debate that many have had and
you can probably find discussion of on various boards. For my part I am a
lumper and I use the 1920 US Census as a master source (I do make the
distinction of where I got it) and then change it up in detail for the
locations and households. Others use the specific census in the specific
location as the master source and the detail is just the household.

Question - what did you do before and how did it work for you? Give it some
thought, watch the videos that reference master sources and decide for
yourself how you want to approach your master sources.

Tag in first file (make sure it's the only tagged item). Close that file.
Open new file. Go to master source list and import Master Source - tagged

Yes, I do it all the time but you need to be VERY careful when you do this.
Bring up the source you want to use but alter. Click Edit over on the right
side. Make the changes you need. Now click Save. Make sure that you select
2. APPLY THE CHANGES TO A NEW COPY OF THIS MASTER SOURCE.

You don't want to accidentally pick the first option or you will overwrite the

Make sure that you don't forget to change the NAME of the source too.

Hi - a simple question but one which confounds me at the moment. I have to
create numerous new sources which are similar (Single county parish registers
where only the name of the parish is different but the origin of the source is
different). Is it possible to copy a master source? Then I could just change
the name and origin.

What I try and remember to do, just in case I slip up later on, is
change ONLY the name of the Source and save it. Then, if I've saved it
correctly as a new Source, I open it and carry on with the edits and
save it again. If I have accidentally overwritten the one I was
editing, it doesn't matter because it's only the name which has changed.

Yes, I do it all the time but you need to be VERY careful when you do this.
Bring up the source you want to use but alter. Click Edit over on the right
side. Make the changes you need. Now click Save. Make sure that you
select 2. APPLY THE CHANGES TO A NEW COPY OF THIS MASTER SOURCE.

You don't want to accidentally pick the first option or you will overwrite
the one you already have and then you will have a mess.

Make sure that you don't forget to change the NAME of the source too.

Hi - a simple question but one which confounds me at the moment. I have to
create numerous new sources which are similar (Single county parish
registers where only the name of the parish is different but the origin of
the source is different). Is it possible to copy a master source? Then I
could just change the name and origin.

Thanks Russ:
I understand that is the way it is designed to work but was hoping for a
select button or a work around. In my way of thinking, it just seems to me
that it is inappropriate to add a master source when no source has been
tied to a fact or event. Its not a major problem, just woks different than
I wanted it to. Still learning the more advanced fetures. Tom

When using research assistant, when you select “plan to search” for a
search item to add it to your to do list , Legacy adds it correctly to the
to do list. However it also adds a new source to your master source list
as well, as a non-source writer master source. I have been rebuilding
my tree and carefully using source writer whenever I add a source. I
would prefer for Legacy not to add this source whenever I add a to do item.
Is there a way to keep this addition from happening? Thanks. Tom

Great explanation. I really had not even thought of that.

Tim- I believe what Sherry means is something like this happens:

Say you enter your grandfather on January 1, 1995. You also enter
several other people on the dates of January 2, 1995, January 3, 1995.
You are using Legacy. You make a Gedcom of your family file, perhaps
to share with a cousin, or just for backup purposes, on January 5,
1995. You keep this Gedcom. Gedcoms do not save the date you entered
 data into Legacy.

Today (also using Legacy), you realize you need to import that Gedcom
you made in January 5, 1995 to a file. Legacy doesn't know better, and
when you import those people, Legacy assigns them a today's date. For
Legacy to use the original date, somehow, someone would have to change
the Gedcom format to accommodate and accept date-added/modified
dates for Legacy. There is a problem here. Let's say Millennia changes
the Gedcom format to accept those dates- can you imagine the uproar
Millennia would have if someone were to take a Millennia-Legacy-built
Gedcom and try to import it into one of the competitors? There are
arguments in both directions as to the validity of this, but I believe
it is a strength for Legacy not to put date-added/modified dates
into Gedcoms. There are those who will disagree- and I won't argue
 either way.

This is also why you lose bookmarks- The current Gedcom standard does
 not accommodate those either.

 Does that help?

 Robert

then when you turn on your netbook and it connects to the internet, any
