Hi Kathy,

No, unfortunately! Not in Legacy anyway but it's easy with ltools or MS
Access.
In Legacy when you do a search, say for all marriages in Toledo you get
results showing Individuals and Ind tags. Even if you fag marriages one at
a time you still can't display them in a list.

drat!

oh well - no biggy, will just stick with the individual tags.
Was hoping to tag the marriages from a certain place in a marriage tag
after doing a Marriage search for that location.

RE: [LegacyUG] Tagging marriages

2014-01-09 Thread Kurt Kneeland
Marriage Tags and Individual Tags are separate. Unfortunately, there is not
yet an advanced tagging function for the Marriage Tags. They can only be
turned on/off one at a time.

Best I can think of is to use advanced tagging to tag your direct ancestors
(exclude siblings, etc, and limit to the desired number of generations.

You can then create a search list based on that tag and perhaps limit the
search list to just the males. Then you could go through that search list to
set the marriage tags.

I would like to tag all direct ancestor marriages to tagged 8th and 9th
generation grandparents. I have them tagged #1 and have a search list.

Is there a way to use this to tag the intervening marriages as marriage tag #1.
This presumes that the tags are different between general and marriage tags.
If not I can use a different tag #.

I would like to use the tags as a research guide and not have to work down the
marriage list (8400) one by one, not knowing right off, which are direct
ancestors and which are 5th cousins 5x removed.

Any pointers to directions or assistance is appreciated.

Thanks

To get a complete picture, you also need to do the paragraph 3 search for
females. There are more marriages where the ancestry of the wife is unknown,
but there are several in my 100+ generations where the ancestry of the husband
is unknown. To be thorough, do both.

Considering the number of generations I and others have, I do hope Legacy will
soon include the ability to tag Marriage Tags to accommodate tracing.

Re: [LegacyUG] Tagging marriages

2014-01-10 Thread Ron Taylor
I actually use the marriage tags quite a bit.  Here is a help file that I sent
out recently to some of the local Legacy users.  It sets the marriage record
"Anniversary Reminder" but logic to set any of the marriage tags is similar.
The process makes it easy to set all the Birthday Reminders and Anniversary
Reminders for descendants of select ancestors...ie living cousins, etc.

How to set
Anniversary and Birthday Reminders for select individuals
1)    Clear tag5 and all UserIDs for everyone in the
Legacy database.  You may also want to
clear all Anniversary and Birthday Reminders so those set by this procedure are
not mixed with others.
2)    Make list of RINs for grandfathers or
great-grandfathers or any other group.
3)    Set tag5 for all descendants (including spouses)
of RINs from step 2.  Easily done with a
Focus Group.  First “Clear List” to start
with an empty Focus Group.  Then click “Add
an Individual and Descendants” for each RIN.  Then Search>Miscellaneous>Focus
Group>Create List>Options>Advanced Tagging>Tag on #5>Everyone in
Search List.  Exit from Legacy.
4)    Set UserID for all biological descendants of the
RINs from step2 with Ltools>Set Special User IDs.  Set radio button “Fill
descendant’s User ID
with Text + Henry Number”.  Enter “HN-“
in the Text field.  Check the box
“Exclude Non-Biological Relationships”.
Click “Run” and “Continue”.  The
number of rows (User IDs for individuals) affected will be displayed.  Exit
from Ltools.
5)    This SQL script will set the Anniversary
Reminder for all marriage records where the marriage status is blank, “This
couple did not marry” is unchecked, both spouses are living and have tag5.
UPDATE (tblMR
INNER JOIN tblIR ON tblMR.IDIRHusb=tblIR.IDIR) INNER JOIN tblIR AS tblIR_1 ON
tblMR.IDIRWife=tblIR_1.IDIR SET tblMR.ReminderTag = 1 WHERE (((tblMR.IDMS)=1)
And ((tblMR.NotMarried)=0) And ((tblMR.IDIRHusb)>0) And
((tblMR.IDIRWife)>0) And ((tblIR.Tag5)=1) And ((tblIR_1.Tag5)=1) And
((tblIR.Living)=0) And ((tblIR_1.Living)=0));
6)    This SQL script will set the Birthday Reminder
for husbands of the marriages affected in step 5.
UPDATE tblMR
INNER JOIN tblIR ON tblMR.IDIRHusb=tblIR.IDIR SET tblIR.ReminderTag = 1 WHERE
(((tblMR.ReminderTag)=1));
7)    This SQL script will set the Birthday Reminder
for wives of the marriages affected in step 5.
UPDATE tblMR
INNER JOIN tblIR ON tblMR.IDIRWife=tblIR.IDIR SET tblIR.ReminderTag = 1 WHERE
(((tblMR.ReminderTag)=1));
8)    This SQL script will set the Birthday Reminder
for all living biological descendants from step 4.  Some of these may already
have been set in
step 6 or step 7 if they were linked to an active marriage.
UPDATE tblIR
SET tblIR.ReminderTag = 1 WHERE (((tblIR.UserRef) Like "HN-*") AND
((tblIR.Living)=0));
9)    Each of the SQL scripts could be executed by
Ltools>“Run Raw SQL”.  Also,
Ltools>”Set Birthday/Anniversary/Death Reminders” could be used to turn off
or turn on the reminders.  You will first
have to set a tag for the individuals or marriages that this process will
affect.  The birthday reminders can be
tagged with Search>Detailed Search>Individual>Birthday
Reminder>Equal to>Checked>Create List>Options>Advanced
Tagging>Tag on #1>Everyone in Search List.  The anniversary reminders can be
found with
similar logic but Legacy does not provide a method for setting the marriage
tags.  This SQL script will set marriage
tag5 if the Anniversary Reminder is set and then use it in Ltools.
UPDATE tblMR
SET tblMR.Tag5 = 1 WHERE (((tblMR.ReminderTag)=1));
10)This
final search may find a few non-biological living descendants or connected
spouses for whom you may want to set the Birthday Reminder.  They might be step
children of a biological
descendant, spouse of a deceased descendant, a divorced spouse, an unmarried
spouse, or other linked individuals.
Search>Detailed Search>Individual>Tag5>Equal to>Tagged
and Individual>Birthday Reminder>Equal to>Unchecked and
Individual>Living>Equal to>Yes.
11)A
marriage marked “This couple did not marry” should be considered as having
status “Unmarried” even if that status has not been explicitly entered.  They
will be excluded like the divorced
spouses if status is non-blank.  This SQL
script can detect those who “did not marry” with blank marriage status.
SELECT
tblMR.IDMR, tblMR.IDIRHusb, tblMR.HusbSurname, tblMR.HusbGivenName,
tblMR.IDIRWife, tblMR.WifeSurname, tblMR.WifeGivenName, tblMR.IDMS,
tblMR.NotMarried FROM tblMR WHERE (((tblMR.IDMS)=1) AND
((tblMR.NotMarried)=1));

Does anybody else think it strange to want genealogy software to also remind
you of birthdays and anniversaries? Isn’t that why drug stores give out those
free calendars where you just take out a pencil, open to all the appropriate
months and days, and then write in things like “Uncle Joe’s b’day”? KISS

It has been around for a LONG time in some programs and I have just ignored the

At least this function has NOT been turned on by default!

Re: [LegacyUG] Tagging marriages

2014-01-11 Thread Bernd Hornung

Your solution, Ron, is actually going the wrong way for what I wanted,
moving up the lines not down. There is probably a solution for that
using your methodology.

Legacy appears to "tag" individuals for the purposes of marking the
direct lines (bold names and +) as well as colour coding the grandparent
lines. If any of these showed up in the Marriage List, I wouldn't need
to ask. I could just scroll down, see the appropriate indication, and
do what I need to do. These are the same pieces of data but seem to be
divorced from each other (pun somewhat intended ).

I don't know anything about how the programming works, but is there a
way to have this relationship?

2014-01-11 Thread Kurt Kneeland
Good point. When Direct Line has been set, the direct line ancestors ought to
show up as bold on the Marriage List (like they do on the name list).

Ancestor colors on the name and marriage lists would also be nice as an option.

Curious. I just found a start at an Advanced Tagging for the marriage tags.
Its under Marriage List -> Options -> Advanced Tagging. Lets you specify what
you are using each tag for, shows a count of how many of each tag are in use,
and lets you specify the 3 default tags. There’s also a choice back on the
Marriage List -> Options menu to clear any of the 3 default tags.
Unfortunately none of the other advanced tagging options are there yet (tag
ancestors, etc)

Laura,
It looks like, currently, that there is no way to quickly tag all marriage
records. However you can Untag all marriage records of a tag # using the
option button on the Marriage List screen. You may be able to do it with MS
Access or the LTools program.

Is there a way to tag ALL marriages in the database? I can see how to
do it with individuals and I already have done that but I would like to
tag all of the marriages so that I can work through them to correct
problems that were in FTM before I converted the file to Legacy. As I
correct them, I remove the tag from the individuals but I would like to
do the same thing with all of the marriages as well

The closest I can find is to tag the Individuals, as Legacy does not seem to
allow tagging of marriage in the search function.

(Marriage) (MRIN) (Not
Equal To) (Tagged)
When list appears, > --when dialog window pops
up--select your tag#--

Now all individuals in your marriage list will be tagged with which ever tag #
you selected.
Hope it helps.

When did you add your first Marriage?

You can select the Marriages by the date they were added. This would then
include those marriages where there's no actual marriage date. Say, you started
using Legacy on 01 Jan 1900 :-0. Then select all marriages where the date-added
was after 01 Jan 1900.

Bit of sledge-hammer meeting nut approach. For example, my file contains 2136
Marriages. Using this approach, I end up with a list of 5607 names. Perfectly
explainable: two people per marriage; multiple marriages.

Then, search list in view, click on Options, then Advanced Tagging. Select your
tag and then click on Everyone In Search List.

Mike,

An interesting approach.

Do you happen to know if this method would include the pseudo marriages created
when a child is born out of wedlock? I suspect it will.

On this point I am wondering if it may be possible to exclude marriages where a
partner has a RIN = 0. Or maybe exclude those where "this couple did not marry"
is set. Worth playing with?

Re: [LegacyUG] Tagging Marriages

2013-10-26 Thread Laura Johnson
This would have been a great idea EXCEPT that once you get the list, you
are NOT getting the marriages to tag. You still get a list of
individuals to tag. I already have tagged all individuals in the
database and have been working my way through cleaning those up.

There are 54,833 individuals and 17090 marriages. The results of the
trial run for this created a list of 52,601. But if you look at the
list, I would be re-tagging several thousand people that I had already
cleared the tag on as my search list for the tag I was doing shows that
I still have 49,654 still to go from my original tagging.

First, let me tell you what I have been doing. I have been entering all
of the births, marriages and deaths from 1820 through 1910 from the
microfilmed records from a town in Sicily. I also have an online
database for this town as well that is fully searchable. I had been a
loyal user of FTM from the early 1990's and had beta tested for them for
years. After beta testing their 2008 and 2009 versions, it was evident
that Ver 16 was going to be the last version I would use due to the
changes they had made to the program. The newer versions cannot handle
my file and scramble the details on sources when they are imported via
gedcom from Ver 16 to FTM 2008, etc.

I switched to Legacy on the advise of a friend who had been using it for
years. It was far superior to what FTM had in any version that I had
used. So I bought the deluxe version and have been using it ever since.

But in bringing my files over to Legacy, I noticed that I needed to do
cleanup on the way I had been doing things before I started using Legacy
and even after I first started using Legacy because I found other
options or ways of doing things that were far superior in Legacy and I
need to cleanup and redo things that were not done that way in the past.

About a year ago, I tagged all individuals in the database with Tag #5.
The description for this tag is: FTM Cleanup Needed. I also have tag 2
and tag 3. These tags designate my paternal great-grandfather's family
(#2) and my maternal great-grandmother's family (#3). This way I can
easily see if a person is included in my ancestral lines or is just
someone from the town.

I have been working my way through the tag #5 as I enter more data in
the file and cleaning them up as I go. But it would be easier if I
could see that the marriage tag was cleared because then I would know
that I had already changed or fixed any problems with the children and
descendants of that line. I wouldn't need to choose each of the
children one by one to confirm whether they were done or not.

My thoughts were originally to use the marriage list to tag so that I
could work through all of the marriage list. I would select the first
marriage on the search list, correct both the wife and husband and any
children they had and remove the tag numbers for both the marriages and
the individuals as I went for that marriage. Then once I had worked
through all of the marriages, I could then do a final search to find any
unlinked individuals

Laura, if you are slightly able to deal with databases and their
structures, then I would suggest considering the Legacy add-on "LTOOLS" for
major clean-up, and special tagging (marriages can have up to three tags).
Dennis Kowallek, the LTOOLS programmer, has helped others with similar
problems. It may be possible to fix all FTM to Legacy conversions that have
been messed up by the standard export-import process for all of your 54,000
individuals and 17,000 marriages by direct manipulation of a copy of the
Legacy database because you are dealing with only one version of FTM and
only one version of Legacy. NEVER work on your original family file with
LTOOLS - only use a copy of your original file.

Re: [LegacyUG] Tagging Marriages

2013-10-28 Thread Ron Taylor
Ltools has a routine under Run Raw SQL to tag all marriages as follows:

UPDATE tblMR SET tblMR.Tag{TagNumber} = 1

That same script could untag all marriages by changing it to

UPDATE tblMR SET tblMR.Tag{TagNumber} = 0

I added a custom SQL to untag only tagged marriages as follows:

UPDATE tblMR SET tblMR.Tag{TagNumber} = 0 WHERE ((tblMR.IDMR <> 0) AND
(tblMR.Tag{TagNumber} <> 0))

More functionality might be added as required.  One routine that I use
frequently is called "Tag Unknown Spouses w/o Children".  It helps to find and
tag marriages with spouse RIN = 0 or the blank spouse marriages with no
offspring.  These often occur in Legacy when a child is displayed in the parent
position without a spouse and someone clicks on the spouse but then does not
actually add a spouse.  That creates an empty marriage record with a blank
spouse.  It show most obviously when you have a young child with a marriage
record indicator and you are certain the child never married.

One more script that I use is the following which shows all marriages that have
any of the 9 tags set.  I use it to determine if any marriage tags need to be
cleared.

SELECT
tblMR.IDMR,tblMR.Tag1,tblMR.Tag2,tblMR.Tag3,tblMR.Tag4,tblMR.Tag5,tblMR.Tag6,tblMR.Tag7,tblMR.Tag8,tblMR.Tag9
 FROM tblMR WHERE ((tblMR.IDMR <> 0) AND ((tblMR.Tag1 <> 0) OR (tblMR.Tag2 <>
0) OR (tblMR.Tag3 <> 0) OR (tblMR.Tag4 <> 0) OR (tblMR.Tag5 <> 0) OR
(tblMR.Tag6 <> 0) OR (tblMR.Tag7 <> 0) OR (tblMR.Tag8 <> 0) OR (tblMR.Tag9 <>
0))) ORDER BY tblMR.IDMR

Hope this give you some ideas about marriage record tagging.  Of course the SQL
scripts could be used in MS Access as well.

Very helpful Ron - there appear to be a number of tasks that LTools
can handle and many Legacy Users have it to add functionality to the
Legacy program. At a recent LVUG Community Hangout, the presenter
mentioned she got her money's worth because she was able to change the
font sizes on the Legacy made website with the LTools program.

Thought I might have been able to select a particular descendant line and then
tag those marriages in one hit - just like you can select a descendant (or
ancestor) line and tag all relevant individuals in one hit. There is no way I
could go through nearly 3000 marriages one by one and identify those that
belong to the line I am trying to tag. However, I have just noticed that by
including a particular individual in the Scrapbook options you also have the
option of including their marriage pictures as well - so I don't need to tag
the marriages. However, I am having awful trouble getting the Scrapbook to
display anything - it is taking an age to process, even though I have now
reduced it to images for one person and his wife. May not bother with it at
all unfortunately.

can use the exact description for clarity. I had done something in the past,
but could no re-create it, so my memory is fuzzy. Sorry.
