Mike,
I do have DSL, I use Chrome. Perhaps these two are the problem. Thanks for

I find with my DSL line that something external happens that results in the
router 'remaking' the connection to the 'Net, and in the process, the DNS
servers change, causing a running program e.g. TBird, not to be able to send and
receive emails. This is solved simply by stopping and restarting TBird.

Re: [LegacyUG] v800-397 & Internet

2014-02-13 Thread Debbie Medeiros
I've cleared my cache and the Legacy News comes back then goes away again.
When you click on "Make sure you are connected to the internet and then
click here to retrieve the latest news items," nothing comes up. This just
happens on the Legacy Home tab under Legacy News. If I click on the
Internet Tab at the top of the program, it will take me to the internet. Is
there a setting in Legacy somewhere that stops the program from connecting
to the internet through Legacy News?

I, too, have seen many cases of programs not displaying something as expected.
It is bad enough when the content is obviously internet/browser rendered. It is
worse when the content is the "normal" output of the program. Telling someone

All that I can do is fight the urge to "educate" them and smile knowingly when

That's what I said! Or what was meant! I develop and support the FreeREG
transcription software, which is a .NET application, and part of it logs in to
the FreeREG website. A recent problem with cookies found the solution to be in
the IE cache not the cache of whatever browser the user was using. So, don't
think I don't know what I'm talking about!

The basic Internet engine on any Windows system is IE-based, regardless of
whether you use the Microsoft browser or not. Consequently, when there are
problems like those experienced by the original poster, it's useless to clear
the used-browser cache. You have to get to the IE-cache via Internet Options and
clear that.

Re: [LegacyUG] v800-397 & Internet

2014-02-09 Thread Brian/Support
Mike's comment about IE is not entirely true. The Legacy Home tab uses
the Internet Explorer (IE) engine which is built into Windows so
anything in that tab which uses the internet such as displaying the
Legacy News and the links in the support section open the links in IE.
Any election by the user to open a link on those web pages in a new
window (via the right click menu) will open IE to display the site.

Legacy does use your default browser to:

a. View web page files on your computer after you create them;
b. Internet > Search Internet or Search > Search Internet; and
c. The link to the Legacy Home page on the Internet ribbon.

Mike,
I did control panel - network & internet - internet options - General -
delete browsing history, temporary internet files & cookies. That took care
of the problem.
Thank you,

A tip: No matter what anyone uses as their browser, programmed access to the
internet invariably uses the Internet Explorer engine that is installed whether
you want it or not.

Updated to 397 this morning, no connection problems with Legacy Home or Legacy
Family Search.

By the way, I notice that the ‘taskbar icon’ when Legacy Family Search is open
has a green ‘L’ so I can differentiate from the regular Legacy program (blue
‘L’). Is this new in 397, or did I just not notice it before? A little thing,
but very helpful.
