Re: [LegacyUG] miss labeling of individual

2016-09-03 Thread Brian Lightfoot
Cathy

I think that is the magic answer….namely, clearing relationships before
re-setting them.

I just did my test child once again with an unknown gender. The part that I
don’t like is that when viewing this unknown gender child in Family View,
he/she defaults to being called a SON by Legacy. Well, what else could you call
a child with an unknown gender. It’s either SON or DAUGHTER and one or the
other is going to be wrong. The programmers made their 50-50 choice and call
he/she a SON.

I then cleared relationship and re-set them once again. No change as expected
to the unknown gender child but still called a son.

I then changed the gender from unknown to FEMALE. Now here is where the OPs
problem comes up. If you only run re-set relationships without clearing them
first, this daughter will remain being called a SON. However, if you clear
relationships first and then re-set the relationships, then the daughter is now
correctly identified as DAUGHTER in the Family View.

So you are correct. You must/should clear relationships first. I have to admit
that I have been very lax in this. Probably because the time involved in
re-setting relationships on my very large file takes so long that I didn’t want
to involve another step in the process. But clearing relationships takes only a
second or two.

I don’t think there is any bug in the program. It’s just that when users cut
corners in using the tools of the programs, then the results can be
unpredictable.

Memo to self / Clear and then re-set !

Thanks everyone for the assistance.

The radio button was listed as female. I had originally put her in as an
unknown sex because I only knew the mother had x number of children and I
didn't know the sex of two of them. I changed it to female when I found out
the correct sex and the name.

I tried check/repair, it did not fix the problem.

I took a little nap and came up with totally deleting the individual and
putting her back in. Made FGS and copied the notes. Put her in as the
correct sex with everything that was in there before.

That fixed the problem.

I had one other child listed as an unknown, so I went in and did an
experiment, I changed that one to a female, and low and behold she was
listed the same way as the first, as an uncle. For some reason Legacy is
not recognizing the sex switch for unknown sex to the sex you subsequently
choose. I have done this on others, I just don't remember the ones I did it
to right now, and had gone in and changed the sex when I knew what they
were. I will have to look carefully at the children now when I make such a
change.

Go ahead and try the experiment. Put in a child of unknown sex to a family,
then change it to female and look at the relationship label that comes up.

2016-09-02 Thread Brian Lightfoot
I think you stumbled upon a slight bug...at least in my opinion.

I started by adding an unknown gender child to myself. Strangely, Legacy
shows the relationship to me as a SON as I view the unknown gender child. So
that's the start of the bug.

I then changed the gender from unknown to FEMALE. That person continued to
be shown as a SON (or an Uncle in the case of your example).

I even reset the relationships and it had no effect. The female child
remained listed as my SON. That is a bug.

Re: [LegacyUG] miss labeling of individual

2016-09-02 Thread Martha Graham

Hi Donna,
One of the things that Legacy used to do with unknown gender is to put
the name in italics. I am not sure if Legacy 8 does it, but you might
want to take a look at your index and see if there are any names in
italics.

Glad that you got it fixed though.

Martha

Re: [LegacyUG] miss labeling of individual

2016-09-02 Thread Donna Newell

I am running 8.0.0.559 I will make the update this evening to 8.0.0.566.

This might be a place where "Check/Repair" is in order. Do
a backup first. As Mike has indicated, run set
relationships after you first do a clear relationships.

Go through the process of relabelling your relatives. Labels get assigned and
then do not change based on new information, until you re-do the labelling. See

Re: [LegacyUG] miss labeling of individual

2016-09-02 Thread Martha Graham

Hi Donna,
Here is what Legacy has to say: [From the Legacy Help File]

Changing Gender

If you find that you need to change the gender of an individual, (if,
for example you or someone else set it incorrectly when entering the
individual) it is easy to do. The procedure, however, depends on the
situation:

If the individual has not yet been linked to a spouse, simply open the
Information screen for the person and change the gender by choosing the
appropriate M or F setting just to the right of the Title Suffix field.

If you have already linked the individual to a spouse, you can swap the
genders of the two individuals by choosing Swap Husband and Wife from
the Edit tab of the Ribbon bar while the desired couple are displayed as
the main Husband and Wife on the Family View or highlighted on the
Pedigree, Descendant, or Index View. (If either the male or the female
is linked to more than one partner, the swap cannot be made. You will
have to unlink the other partner(s), swap the gender of the current
couple, and then make the necessary gender changes to the other partners
before linking them back in.)

I hope this helps,
Martha
