Hi, I've noticed that when I add a new location via an event try Geo
code it, I get a message saying the database is not available to download
it, but when I go to the same location in the master location list, the
database seems to be there as the same location is Geo coded. Perhaps I'm
not understanding quite how it works. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Nick.

Re: [LegacyUG] Geo Database

2015-03-06 Thread Wendy Howard
No. It should be accessible to anyone who has the link.

I use this all the time, when I want to share documents, photos, etc
with someone else. It's better than attaching a file to an email, as it
keeps the size of the email down while still giving the recipient access
to the file. You can share one file, or you can share a whole folder,
with just the one link. This article tells you more about it -
https://www.dropbox.com/help/20?path=sharing_files_and_folders

Click on the link, and when the page comes up in your browser you should
see a button to download the file. Click on that, tell your computer
where to put the file (into your Downloads folder is fine unless you
want to put it somewhere else for your own reasons). Then carry on with
the install as instructed originally (run/execute the file, I expect).

Hope this helps. :-)

Re: [LegacyUG] Geo-Database

2014-02-15 Thread anairene
It took a bit of work but I put the Geo database I have used for years
with all my alterations into Legacy 8, and it works perfectly.

The Geo-base that comes with 8 (you must download) is HUGE and full of
places that you don't want.

I simply removed the new Geo-database and copy-pasted all my old files.

I have windows 7 but this works for earlier versions

Hit windows Key + E to open explorer
(you can use search for Geo-database to find it or MyDocuments]\Legacy
Family Tree\_AppData\Misc
Then replace the database

Re: [LegacyUG] Geo Database error

2013-12-03 Thread John B. Lisle
Randy,

I am sure that there are lots of errors like
this. Legacy obtained the GeoDB sources a number
of years ago and they were the best available at the time.

Think of the data as Modern, semi-historical.
All of the English towns seem to be listed with
their more or less historical counties, even if
those counties no longer technically exist.

Also, know that you will see spelling differences
between Bing, GeoDB, and Wikipedia.

Sometimes, you just need to accept that the
location data you get is just clues and you have
to research the locations a bit yourself.

My Australian friends like to tell me that
Australia does not have counties. Yet, I do find
historical records to counties or districts.
Adelaide is a city, but it is also a district
that encompasses lots of town, villages,
neighborhoods. Sometimes you just have to be flexible...

What is important is that you create your own
standard for how locations are to be represented
in your family files and then stick to it. Do not
jump around calling the same place by a dozen different ways or spellings.

john.

Terry,
Have you gone to OptionsCustomizeOther tab and at the bottom is a
button Database Maintenance under Geo Location? When you click on it a window
will open showing the path and instructions on how to create it and what you
have to do. Basically if you purchased the Download Only version of Legacy then
you must Create it and then import it into the database you create. If you have
the CD-ROM version then follow those instructions.
