XLSX file in which the new line is missing in Excel

The issue is still here in 5.1.2.2.

I saved two files (one in .xls and one in .xlsx format). Both looks good when
opened in LibreOffice Calc, but when I open them in Excel (Excel 2010) the .xls
file looks good, but the new line is not saved correctly in the .xlsx file.

The text is put in the cell is the following: 
Header
- Another line that must wrap

The word 'Header' is bolded. The missing new line is after the word 'Header'
before the dash.

try opening that file with the portable release you can find here.

if the portable version works fine it means you probably have a corrupted user
profile

BTW, will table styles propose a hierarchy/inheritance? I deeply miss page
styles inheritance and I would very much like that such a drawback doesn't
affect the newer table styles functionality.

On pc Debian x86-64 testing with master sources updated today or with LO Debian
package (5.1.2), I don't reproduce this.

Please use LO package from Debian repo not from https://fr.libreoffice.org/.
Indeed the last ones are more for packagers.
So, uninstall any LO version then install last one from Debian repo (via apt or
a front-end of it).

Please check and let us know if disabling OpenGL rendering improves the save
and the stability on your system. 

Done from Tools -> Options -> View:  "Enable OpenGL for all rendering"
checkbox, uncheck it and OK out.  Then restart LibreOffice.

For me, without OpenGL active the OLE formulas that run outside page margins do
not hang.

Check on page 32 obj 53, page 33 obj 76 and page 37 obj 155

Also, please provide OS and Desktop environment details, start with a copy of
the text from Help -> About LibreOffce

Ben,

Please turn-off OpenGL rendering to see if formula rendering is more stable
using the default graphics rendering and system driver.  

Done from Tools -> Options -> View: "Use OpenGL for all rendering" checkbox.
And then restart LibreOffice.

Thanks for the quick response,
I'm usually running Windows 8.1 but my computer is being fixed so right now
it's Windows 10. I have the exact same problem on 8.1
Usually I don't work in a table, this was just an example.
It's hard to reproduce, it happens either when I insert a new formula or
sometimes I just keep writing and it disappears. Other times I scroll up and
the formulas are gone. I use the F2 shortcut to get to the formulas editor.
When I installed Libre Office the default shortcut would just give me a sort of
text field that didn't do anything. I changed it to Formula. No idea what's the
different.
I don't see the Tools->Symbols but I'm attaching the Edit part.
The table isn't a major issue for me, I rarely have to work with tables, the
problem is when it's in text.
I'm attaching another screenshot without a table and in the comments are the
formulas.
I don't select symbols, I type everything by hand.

So it happened again. Of course not when I was logging...
I realized that there's a newer version than 5.1.1 so I updated.
The same font disappeared. Although I only noticed it today. So either it was
only removed after I restarted or I didn't start my video player after it. (I
use this font for subtitles)

I tried to re-create it. Downgrade to 5.1.1, then upgrade again but it didn't
happen again. Most annoying. 

Since it not happens every upgrade I'm guessing the actual fonts in the package
have to be never than the ones installed on the system as a prerequisite for
this bug.

It'd help a lot if the installer would automatically create a log with relevant
entries. Otherwise it'll be hard to get a log. One has to be familiar with the
issue and remember to start logging every time one updates libreoffice in hopes
it happens to present itself at that time.

Do you have this file on your PC? If yes, please attach it

Please could you test it with developer version (with OpenCl enabled)? Some
OpenCl issues was resolved in new versions and we need to know if your bug is
resolved too.

Workaround didn't work.  I selected the PDF "printer" and it did change to a
#11 envelope.  But when I go back to the correct printer it changes right back
to letter size (8-1/2 x 11).  

I have added a #11 envelope to the list of page sizes in the properties of the
printer itself (I did not even have to do this in order to print property with
Microsoft Word) but Libre still refuses to recognize it.

Believe me, I'm no fan of Word... but it looks like I'll have to rely on it for
sizes that Libre is prejudiced against.

Illustration of redraw problem

In the previous last-most recent version of libreoffice-fresh from the
archlinux extra repository, the scrollbar didn't appear at all. In the latest
update, the bar is present, but does not redraw properly (the bar "paints" the
pane as it move, not erasing its prior position). This occurs in all
applications in the LibreOffice suite.

Using adwaita theme on gnome 3.20.1 (gtk3 is 3.20.2).

So lets see what the default is with other apps.

0.5pt - MS Word, WPS/Kingsoft Writer, Abiword
1pt - Google Docs, WordPerfect
2pt - Calligra Words

2pt looks horrible visually on the rendered page, so i can only guess how it
would look on a printed page. At 100% on my 1600x900 resolution, i couldnt see
a rendering difference in LO between 0.05pt, 0.25pt, 0.5pt or 1pt and at 200%
there was no difference between 0.05pt, 0.25pt, 0.5pt. So i think using 0.25pt,
0.5pt or 1pt would be a good default and it should be decided based on how it
looks when printed and what values we expect users to change the border to. I
dont have a printer, so i'll leave it up to those with a printer to decide. :D

I would definitely up-vote this enhancement request. I'm an engineering
post-doc and I use chemical symbols all the time; I often need to indicate
chemical charge states with super-scripts. The current super-script setting
accessed by ctrl-shift-p is not desirable to me; I would much prefer a value
for "raise/lower by" of 67% compared to the default value of 33% (I don't
understand why this is the default, but that's a separate issue). In writer I
could address this by creating a new character style and assigning it to a
customized keyboard shortcut. However, I cannot do this in impress. This
dramatically slows down by presentation preparation. Automating this process
would be extremely helpful to me. 

Is adding support for character styles in impress a very difficult problem? If
it's something simple that developers won't get to because it's not a high
priority, then I would be happy to explore a code fix myself.

However, there does seem to be badness with the OLE objects used in the test
document. At page 32 of the document you've allowed one of the frames holding
OLE objeck53 to extend beyond page margin. And using navigator to open onto
page 33--object80 hangs. 

Not sure what to make of that, but can not reproduce the basic
open-edit-save-reopen of this issue. Opens in about 3sec, saves in about 3
seconds.

upper and lowercase and will be available in 5.2.

If you use upper and lower case alot, then i'd recommend you unhide their
buttons in the formatting toolbar (View > Toolbar > Customize), add shortcuts
to the functions (Tools > Customize > Keyboard), or use Shift + F3 to cycle
between uppercase, lowercase and title case.

And there is already a setting in LO to show cell border shadows when creating
tables with no border. It's not on by default (which is not smart, competition
has it on by default), but it exists.

Well it *is* a formatting setting so it should be useful as a setting, not
"let's pick the worst default so everyone is angry and gets to change it". I
defy you to find real-world documents with .05pt table borders. Except as art
experiment or LO-produced mistakes.

Hey Ben,

Thanks for posting. We needs some additional details about your Windows
version. 
Also, open a Math formula edit session and tell us what fonts show from the
Format -> Fonts dialog. And also from the Tools -> Symbols dialog when
selecting a symbol and using the Edit button--the Font value.

Also, what steps are you using to insert the formula into Writer.

>From the screen shot it looks like you are working in a Table, and then are
inserting a formula into a cell of a table.  Was the Table at its full size, or
are you adding rows to the table as you go?

What about outside the table.  Are you inserting formulas there? And, do they
remain intact as you continue to edit?

We need a set of steps to reproduce the issue reliably. And ideally, a test
Writer .odt document, including all of the OLE formulas before they go
missing--the minimal test case that when opened reliably recreates the loss of
the formulas from the table cells.

Sorry don't see any issue with the minimal "hairline" value used as default
when tables are created. It is certainly not "useless".

On creation and during editing table border style is fully configurable from
the Table Properties dialog found on the Table menu and the Table toolbar. 

Using the device minimum setting as default is more commonly useful for
composing tables where the border width is only providing a visual que to cell
content. Anything more than device minimum becomes a style best applied from
the dialog to change from default. In other words the default is correct and
useful as is.

Since its setting to .05pt is not a valid value--perhaps it would be less
confusing if actually relabeled "hairline" or "minimal" on the dropdown
list--beyond that see no no reason to change the UI, or the defaults.

Is this the same as bug 98729 I wonder?  Both report crashes in the presence of
formulas, albeit in different applications, and both are fixed between 5.1 and
master.  If the same, it adds to the importance of backporting the fix to 5.1.

@raal,

Bug 98729 already has whiteboard "backportRequest:5.1".  Do we need to do
anything futher?

If I open the attached file in LO 5.1.0.3 on Windows 7, it shows up correct -
and it does not crash when exporting to PDF in the GUI.

However: While in step (a) [Linux only] before and in GUI mode (Linux and
Windows), the table EMF is about 1/3 of the page width wide, in the
LO/Windows-exported PDF file, it is shrunken to about a 11th of the page width!

Default table border width should be what users expect, ie the usual border
width of a table in documents, without strange unusual air-thin styling. Around

I have two issues related to a presentation (originally PPTX, reduced example
is ODP) with an EMF image. The EMF shows a table with text.

Used version is LibreOffice 5.1.1.3 89f508ef3ecebd2cfb8e1def0f0ba9a803b88a6d
(as downloaded) on CentOS 6 and CentOS7.


(a) Using
  soffice --headless  --invisible  --convert-to pdf test.odp
the file is converted to PDF, but the table lacks the text - only the border
and the background of the cells is shown. (Missing text might or might not be
related to bug 92849 and bug 95584.)


(b) Using
  soffice  --convert-to pdf test.odp
it fails with: "X IO Error" and no PDF is generated.
(Vaguely related to bug 63324)


(c) Opening the file in GUI mode looks good, but at "Export to PDF", LO also
crashes with "X IO Error"


(d) As with (c), using 4.3.7.2 of/on CentOS 7.2 and 4.2.8.2 on/of CentOS 6.2,
also fails with "X IO Error"; oddly, it those also fail with "--headless
--invisible".


The headless part [i.e. (a)] is a REGRESSION to LO 5.0: Looking at older
conversions, on CentOS 6.x (version = what's listed as producer): "LibreOffice
4.0" and "LibreOffice 5.0" is fine, "LibreOffice 5.1" lacks the text in the
table.

Tried to not set MiterLimit at all and use Win default (10.0f), same result. It
can not have to do with zoom when taking the Gdiplus docs serious: "The miter
limit is the maximum allowed ratio of miter length to stroke width.". Something
relative (ratio) is scale-invariant per definition.

Just saw that it does not just depend on zoom - it also depends on paint
position. Using the right (vertical) scrollbar shows that sometimes some miter
geometry is painted, sometimes not. Very strange...

Tried to use 'AddBeziers' (and AddLines) instead of 'AddBezier' in
impAddB2DPolygonToGDIPlusGraphicsPathReal because I guessed that when adding
single beziers where the end point of the current is always the start point of
the next may indeed add double points to the Gdiplus::GraphicsPath, but the
result is the same.

text flow)

I think that 'issue' and 'test case' were perfect. It is confusing and it does
take a lot of time to figure this out (at least did for me).

It actually always is.

I don't understand this (it's not you, it's me, happens to me a lot). Did you
want to do it the way it's showed in my first attachment (second image on top
of the second page)?

What you could also do is anchor that second image to a 'Another line' and then
do a page break to force 'Another line' to star on the second page and second
image will follow: just position on the end of 'A line' paragraph and hit
Ctrl+Enter.

And you have frame around second image and not around first. That's not
consistent and inserting images and frames to LO is like building legos.

Frames and images frustrated me every time I needed to insert them.

Screenshot of formulas disappearing

Hello,

I'm studying engineering and am using OpenOffice to write everything during
class (very convenient! Really intuitive syntax!). The only problem is that the
formulas disappear. I'm not exactly sure when the problem started. I have had
it on two computers. I updated to the newest version, that didn't help so I
downgraded to the 4.4.3 , the problem went away for a couple of hours and then
came back.
This is making the use of LibreOffice near impossible, I would love a fix.
I'm attaching a screenshot which demonstrates the problem. It also exists in
exactly the same way without a table. As you can see some of the formulas
shrink, some lose proportions and get larger, and when I double click them the
contents disappear both graphically and in the "command line" where you type
the content so there's no way to restore them.

I would love a solution because I'm really enjoying LibreOffice.

The test case was oversimplified to make the "issue" appear, so it doesn't make

Confirmed during re-test on:

Version: 5.1.2.2
Build ID: d3bf12ecb743fc0d20e0be0c58ca359301eb705f
CPU Threads: 8; OS Version: Windows 6.1; UI Render: GL; 
Locale: en-GB (en_GB)

I still got the "No JRE" error when opening an HSQL database for the first time
after installing LO.

The only thing that was different is that when I went to the JRE selection
section of the preferences, the JRE did appear to be selected, I clicked on it
and then closed the dialog and restarted LO, and the database then worked
correctly.

I haven't been able to confirm whether this issue would have resolved itself
without clicking the in JRE selection box, because the issue doesn't reappear
after uninstalling then reinstalling LO.

When I tried to scroll in the document, or to use internal hyperlinks, also
when updating table of content, Writer crashes and endless file recovery occurs
(either the recovered file or the original one before editing crashes.
When reverting with 5.05, there's no problem.

Well, you anchored that second image to a _page text area_ and you said
_bottom_. I think it does what told to do.

If I were you I'd double click on second frame and set 'Vertical position' to
'Paragraph text area'. That sets 'Another line' to page 1.

bottom of the second page -- why not anchor it _to a page_ (Anchor section on
top right) at set vertical property to _bottom_?

You are forgetting that you need to anchor two elements, and image needs to be
anchored in relation to the frame, but frame needs to be anchored in relation
to a page (or paragraph).

It's not a bug -- it's designed that way (and we can argue about that).

My complex document that crash with 5.1.x

I made tricky memos to edit A5 documents without any problem with at last v.
5.05
When I tried to scroll in the document, or to use internal hyperlinks, also
when updating table of content.
Renaming the .config/libreoffice folder does'nt solve.
I install Libreoffice with DEB packages downloaded from
https://fr.libreoffice.org/ either stable version (5.05) or final release of
evolution version (5.1.x)

Well, since there's no log file generated on normal installation that's
unavailable. 

In the last instance the removed files were installed from the font's own
website:

And got purged when I installed 5.1.1.

While typing, some of the characters will appear out of the order I typed them.
  For example, when I tried typing the summary above in a Writer document, this
is what appeared: Whil teyping, some characesat rppear out of order oh tow the
rayet yped.  This does not seem to happen in Calc, only Writer.  However, just
to make sure, I tested a different keyboard that was working normally on
another machine, and also tried other USB ports to plug the keyboards in to. 
In each case I have gotten the same result, only while typing in Writer.

Hmm, we want to clip these to some sane size relative to the host page to avoid
the 19km impossible to sanely handle original case. I see that the default page
isn't of 0 width/height (which was special cased) but of 10 width/height (which
has no explanation mentioned)

I can confirm with Version: 5.2.0.0.alpha0+; win7

In 5.2 is logic turned -  aspect ratio is maintained by default and shift works
like don't keep aspect ratio.

Checked what happens on WIn: Indeed the fat line is painted by gdiplus, in
WinSalGraphicsImpl::drawPolyLine. The correct miter type is sued leading to
const Gdiplus::REAL aMiterLimit(15.0);
Gdiplus::DllExports::GdipSetPenMiterLimit(pTestPen,
aMiterLimit);
Gdiplus::DllExports::GdipSetPenLineJoin(pTestPen,
Gdiplus::LineJoinMiter);

what should work. Also tried to use LineJoinMiterClipped which seems to be the
better default to get the standard-fallback to bevel. Did not help, still
happens.
BTW: Disabling AA falls back to decompositon, so this works.

Hi,

There are also other people looking for this solutions and apparently in the
forums noone can solve the issue. In impress upon selecting objects, associated
toolbars appear in a new "line" and forces layout to redraw whole interface.
This is very bad for usability. Objects slide from under the mouse icon.
Inaccurate clicks deselects the object, causing toolbar to disappear again and
everything is redrawn again. You can imagine how exhausting this can be.

My workaround was to show commonly used toolbars (such as text formatting)
under the View menu to reduce these events. But then after deselecting a text
box it disappeared again. So apparently there is no way to make a toolbar
permanently shown.

Maybe ribbon styles interface can be a good solution on the long run, but at
least users should be able to make toolbars permanently shown.

A workaround is, in the Print dialog, to select another printer, and select the
correct printer again.

This workaround, as easy as it may look, is hard for a person who cannot
hand-write addresses anymore, barely use the mouse, and whose computer literacy
and short term memory are very low.
