(In reply to Joey Reid from comment #10)
 IGN,
I think you're on the wrong track. If you open TXTBK Quiz 1.12.doc in LO 4.1
or AOO, put the cursor on the ÷ symbol, you'll see the font change to
Symbol. If you do the same in LO 4.2+, the font stays Times New Roman.
We're not dealing with the standard Unicode/ASCII ÷ symbol.
Just rechecked saw Times New Roman with AOO 4.1.1 portable, LO 4.1.6.2
portable, LO 4.0.6.2 under Win7 x86.
Wondering why we saw different results?

OneDrive, Word2010, Word2013, and Writer 4.2+ all show the  symbol. Unless
someone can show otherwise, I'd say that the current behavior is correct.
It's possible that this file was created with Kingsoft Writer, old
OpenOffice, or some other app that exports to a non-standard DOC format.
Btw maybe you're right. This report should be closed if not clear which app
used to create the file.

I just curious why results looks inconsistent different among us (incl.
reporter).

I can tell that with MS Word Viewer I see the same thing as in latest Word 2010
and Word 2013 screenshot.

so if not even MS itself canshow that symbol in it's own proprietary format why
LibO should be able to do it?

it's NOTOURBUG

IGN,
Disregard my Symbol Font theory. While testing I must have copied the character
from Writer back to Word. I had several copies open in LO, AOO, and Word.

But I still think we probably should close this bug report until someone can
confirm that this is a valid Word Doc and what version of Word can actually
open it. If it is a valid file, the question becomes Why did MS break their
format and should LO behave like new or older version?

I saw exactly same result with various version from LO 3.6.7.2 - 4.3.2.2, AOO
4.1.1, WPS (Kingsoft) 2014 under Ubuntu 12.04 x86.

Related to a font that is not installed ?

 Word 2010
Same result with LO 4.0.6.2, 4.1.6.2, 4.2.6.3, 4.3.1.2 (all portable).

But with LO 4.0.6.2 (installed on system), I saw diamond/rhombus symbol.

Interestingly, I got correct result with AOO 4.1.1 portable under same system.

Really weird..

*) All tested on same system: Win7 x86

@cliffa, please inform what application used to create that file? Word and/or

Unfortunately, will take me a few days to confirm with this professor what
program they used to create the doc.

I was on 4.1.6 and it shows ÷
Upgraded to 4.2.6.2 and shows film projector.
Downgraded same machine to 4.1.6.2 and shows division again.

Tried on separate machine, same results.
Both machines Win7 64, one Lenovo laptop, one home built desktop.
Sent file to a Win 7 64, MS Office 2010 machine and got division symbol.
Created document in MS Office with ALT+246 division symbol and get division
symbol on libreoffice machines.

So, it's something specific to this document and the way it was created, but
teacher says i'm the only one having problems with that symbol... and only on
my upgraded LO versions.

Thanks for the response cliffa.. I guess it's related to import problem in LO
with Word created file using ALT/ASCII character.

Found these resources:
http://www.tedmontgomery.com/tutorial/altchrc-a.html
http://www.theasciicode.com.ar/extended-ascii-code/division-sign-obelus-ascii-code-246.html

Suggested steps to verify this issue from scratch:
1. Using Word, create new .doc or .docx file
2. Make certain Num Lock key has been pressed/activated
3. While pressing ALT key, press 246 (in proper sequence on numeric keypad)
4. Release ALT key, and ÷ symbol will appear
5. Close save file, then open in LO

Unfortunately I don't have Word to verify the issue.

Tested with LO 4.3.1.2 portable (Win7 x86) in step 1, issue not reproducible.
