Have you experienced any issues running LibreOffice on OSX? If there

Tried and failed to repro on Ubuntu 14.04. Any special tricks to
exercise the problem? ;-)

(Also added versions for 5.2.0.2 and 5.2.0.3 to Bugzilla. Let me know
if any other versions are missing)

Ah yes, it does have auto-suggestions, although (in my personal
application of the field) I often just ignore them :P

Correct. I feel like that one might be a bit easier to implement than

Hi all,

Here's a handy tip to help you get the most out of using our Bugzilla instance:

If any of you have ever wanted to make a private note on a bug report,
feel free to use the 'Tags' field. The content in there is only
viewable to you, and editing that field won't send email to any other
users (so don't be shy about tagging up bugs with your notes!)

You can query on the field just like searching the Whiteboard (look
under 'Custom Search') , so I've personally used the Tags field to
keep track of things like repro needs, people whom I've poked about
fixing a particular bug, or bugs that need some cleanup help.

It's really nice to be able to keep my notes associated directly with
bug reports instead of keeping them in a separate document or external
list. Because you're the only one who will see it, you can keep the
notes as messy or as tidy as you like!

want-backtrace -> wantBacktrace

[Libreoffice-qa] Bugzilla: Update on Whiteboard -> Keywords migration

The migration of several tags from the Whiteboard -> Keywords is now
largely complete for Open bugs. Here's some useful info for y'all:

Last week I made some tweaks to Bugzilla to make it easier to do bulk
edits to bugs without spamming everyone's inboxes. Because bugs were
updated without an email notification, I did include a short comment
with each silent change.


What's Changed?

There were several categories of Whiteboard tags that were migrated to
Keywords. Here's the live list of Keywords:

The Keywords field will give you some auto-completion options once you
start typing, so as long as you remember the first few characters,
you're set.

Alongside the basic migration, I did a bit of consolidation, typo
correction, and added documentation. There were a number of EasyHacks
tagged with "SkippCpp" (instead of "SkillCpp") and some other amusing
Whiteboard entries. Remember: Although it may be tempting, please do
not write full sentences in the Whiteboard! :-)

Big kudos go to beluga and others who helped to triage and close a
number of old bugs that were uncovered during the migration.


How Do I Update My Queries?

The safest way to update any saved query urls is to open them in a
browser and tweak them live in Bugzilla. For those who like to live
dangerously, it's often possible to just search-and-replace
"status_whiteboard" -> "keywords" _IF_ all tags you're referencing
have been converted to Keywords. Example:

We've migrated all open blockers to critical (migrating the
resolved/closed bugs was deemed more disruptive than helpful).
Renaming 'blocker' was proposed and then postponed, as the 'blocker'
label is threaded extensively through the Bugzilla codebase, and
patches to remove it would complicate upgrades. It's possible that we
could remove the option *solely* in the drop-down display when
editing, if that would be considered helpful for new bug reporters.

Importance fields (Priority, Severity) in the Bugzilla bug-editing
interface, and change the term 'Wishlist' to 'Enhancement' (to reflect

Hi Kendy,
It looks like the rename script got greedy and erroneously modified an
ODT (sw/qa/complex/writer/testdocuments/TESTXMLID.odt):

Could you add file extension white/black -listing to the script to

Performance issues are definitely something we like to track. Certain
code tweaks or feature implementations can create unintended side
effects, and the quicker that QA can digest, verify, and get that
information to the devs, the easier it is to address the root causes!

You mention "Performance issues with Libreoffice 5.02.2", by which I
believe you mean LibreOffice 5.0.2.2. We just released a 5.0.3.2
version, and for testing purposes, we have an alpha1 of our upcoming
5.1 release available here:
http://dev-builds.libreoffice.org/pre-releases/

It would be very helpful if you could file a bug report, add the tag
'perf' to the Whiteboard field, and provide the following:
* A set of simple steps to reproduce this behavior
* Does this happen only with 5.0.2.2? How about the 5.1 alpha1?
* Is it any faster with an older version, such as our current "Still"
release, 4.4.6?

[Libreoffice-qa] Halloween BugHunting Session for 5.1 -- Advertise and Recruit!

Hi all,

As you all undoubtedly know by now, our 3-day BugHunting Session for
the alpha1 build of the 5.1 Release Series will be this Friday,
Saturday, and Sunday.

Each BugHunting Session is a great time for us to concentrate on
finding bugs in the alpha builds, and really polishing up the
development that's been taking place on LibreOffice's master branch.
It's also a great time for recruitment.

Given that the BugHunting Session happens to overlap with Halloween
this year, it's a great time for us to use some of that fun, spooky,
energy and invite people to join us. Bugzilla will have a banner, I'll
be writing a blog post shortly, and I invite all of you awesome folks
to help us spread the word about how much these testing times help out
the project.

[Libreoffice-qa] [ANN] 5.1.0.0.alpha1 builds available

For the upcoming 5.1.0 release, the alpha1 builds are now available on
pre-releases. These builds will have a prefix of:
LibreOfficeDev_5.1.0.0.alpha1.

These builds are built in dev-configuration, so installation will not
overwrite any previous release versions of LibreOffice.

[Libreoffice-qa] Most Annoying Bugs: Wiki docs updated

The MAB docs on the wiki have been updated to reflect the new
Priority-based system for categorizing bugs:

The old MAB tracker bugs (mab4.3, mab4.4, etc.) will remain in
Bugzilla for historical reference, but should be ignored for current
work. Please make sure that any tooling or documentation that

Sure thing: 62% of the bugs currently bibisected are RESOLVED or CLOSED.

(CLOSED bugs make up less than 1% of the total -- we don't seem to

[Libreoffice-qa] Bugzilla: Further restrictions on Severity field

Hi all,

As I mentioned at the QA Meeting today, we've implemented further
restrictions on access to the Severity field. For users to raise the
Severity above 'normal', they will have to be a member of the
'Contributors' group.

To ensure that new contributors don't have to wait for a Bugzilla
Administrator to show up in IRC, we have 'blessed' several other QA
Team members, giving them the ability to add new users to the
Contributors group. If a newcomers wishes to join the QA Team and help
us properly triage incoming bugs, please ask in the #libreoffice-qa
channel, and it's very likely that one of our delegates will be
available.

QA Team:
After a new user is added to the 'Contributors' group, please help
answer any questions they have, and encourage them to read through all
our documentation about triaging and testing.

Good catch: looks like that sentence got mangled, but I've now fixed
it. The intended point was that we don't need to label any
Left-to-Right text layout, as it's the default.

Hmm, that's a good question. I'm not sure if that text layout uses a
different mechanism, so I'm cc'ing Lior and Matthew Francis to see if

Another good question for the above pair. My understanding is that
top-to-bottom and cjk are often used interchangeably in text layout,

Yes, further restrictions to the Severity field (and other fields)
will be forthcoming :-) I'd like to make sure these changes are solid
before we deploy further tweaks, so please let us know this week if there are
any issues with the 4.4.10 upgrade or the existing set of restrictions.

Bugzilla has been upgraded to 4.4.10 and updated patches for
restricting access to the Importance fields (Priority & Severity) have
been deployed as well:

Dear Community,

The Document Foundation is pleased to announce the first release
candidate of LibreOffice 5.0.2. The upcoming 5.0.2 will be the second
bugfix release of our fresh 5.0 line. Please be aware that LibreOffice
5.0.2 RC1 has not been flagged as ready for production use yet,
however feel free to give it a try instead of 5.0.1.

A work-in-progress list of new features in LibreOffice 5.0 can be
found at https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleaseNotes/5.0

The release is available for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X from our QA
builds download page at

Windows builds are also provided in 64bit version.

The tag libreoffice-5.0.2.1 (AKA 5.0.2 RC1) and the corresponding
branch libreoffice-5-0-2 have been created.
The branch will be used for fine tuning of the 5.0.2 release.
(there is one additional RC planned)

The following rules apply:

+ preferably just translation or blocker fixes
+ only cherry-picking from libreoffice-5-0 branch
+ 2 additional reviews needed; 2nd reviewer pushes
+ no regular merges back to anything

The 'libreoffice-5-0' branch is still active and will be used for the
5.0.3 bugfix release. Please read more at

Hopefully it will work for you :-)  Most probably, you will also want to
do (if you haven't done it yet):

git config --global push.default tracking

When you do git push with this, git will push only the branch you are
on; e.g. libreoffice-5-0-2 when you have switched to it.  This will
save you some git shouting at you.

Linux distro packages might find source tarballs at
http://dev-builds.libreoffice.org/pre-releases/src/
They will soon be available from the official page together with the builds.

[Libreoffice-qa] QA Meetings: Better time? Better format? Better theme song?

Hi all,

I've chatted with many of you briefly over the last week or two about
finding the best time to have our QA Meetings. With us spread out all
over the world, some of you go to sleep before we wake up over here in
the States, so it's always tricky to find one time slot for everyone.

It's important to me to hear from all of you with feedback,
suggestions, and improvements. Having our meeting times on Wednesdays
is very convenient as I can take our concerns or topics and bring them
up the very next day during the Engineering Steering Committee (ESC)
call.

I have a couple different ideas for improvements, but this week I'm
going to do something new and be available this Wednesday every hour,
starting at 1300 (UTC). I'll show up a minute or two past the hour,
say hi, and see how many QA folks are present in the channel. If we've
got 3+ people, we can have a short (or long) chat.

I'm especially interested in hearing from people who haven't been to
QA Meetings in the past, as growing our team and expanding
team-members' skills is vital to our ability to triage and process all
of the incoming bugs and feature requests.

Of course, there's no need for you to wait until Wednesday to bring up
suggestions about meeting days/times or other improvements to our
collaboration. Email still works marvelously well :-)

Hello all,

For the upcoming version 5.0.1 the builds for RC2 are now available as
a pre-release.

It is a build in release-configuration, meaning that it will update a
previous version of LibreOffice on Windows.
Linux and Mac users can install alongside LibreOffice 4.4

[Libreoffice-qa] Bugzilla: Temporarily reverting patch to Importance fields

Hi all,

As we've run into some unintended side effects from our latest local
changes to Bugzilla, I've reverted our field-restriction patch for the
time being.

This means that everyone will once again be able to make changes to
the Severity and Priority fields, so please do keep a watchful eye out
for miscategorized bugs.

The upgrade to Bugzilla v4.4.9 appears to be fine, so I'm leaving
those patches in place.

Thanks for all your hard work w/the OS X bugs! Everyone is of course
free to work on whatever projects he or she wishes, but please don't
feel any obligation from the TDF side to test the Collabora OS X
builds.

How differently is it built? My understanding is that it's pretty
close, but I haven't had a chance to really delve into the details. As

From the Collabora side, I'd expect that Michael and/or Sam Tuke would
be good people to answer any questions about their particular goals,

inquiries from multiple Mac users in the past couple of years asking
about whether we were ever going to make LibreOffice available via
this app store, so I think that there is a good potential market for
users who like the ease of installation and updates.

 At the moment, I am
 trying to understand whether this is going to become a permanent fixture
 of the landscape, a bit like NeoOffice (to which I donate once a year,
 but take no interest in the project otherwise),

What's the status of NeoOffice? I haven't heard any news from that
front in years.

 What effect will that have
 on the TDF build in the long term ?

It's *possible* that most mac users will gravitate towards an install
via a trusted and easy-to-use update mechanism. I know that there's
some GSoC work to repurpose the Mozilla updater this summer as well,
so perhaps there will be even more choices for mac users soon.

I don't expect that our mac userbase will jump on the app store
bandwagon overnight, and many will probably never buy-in to that
system at all. I see this development as largely being about choice
and convenience, and I think the shiny packaging will attract both
some number of our existing userbase as well as a good number of new
users who decide to try out LibreOffice.

Thanks for the ping!

I took a look, and it looks like the builds have
LibreOffice_4.4.4.1.0 as their version # on the server, with the
GNU/Linux builds I tested having Version: 4.4.4.1.0+ displayed in
the About box. I'm guessing that they accidentally had an extra digit
added to the version number before/during the initial build process.
As far as I can tell, that naming issue hasn't affected the operation
of our testing.

We've been facing a tough challenge staying below 300 UNCONFIRMED
bugs, with our count currently back up at 324. By our Bug Hunting
Session for 5.0 in May, I hope that we can bring that number down to
250 (and not have it increase back to 300+)

Here are a few tips to help us get some traction in this space:

1) Make sure the summary is accurate

If the summary is vague, please clarify it. Or ask the reporter to do
so (and put the bug in NEEDINFO)

2) Use NEEDINFO whenever you need info from the reporter

If something about the bug isn't clear, if you need a document for
testing, or if you need repro steps from the bug reporter, please
leave a note and put the bug in NEEDINFO status.

We've added an automatic message that lets the bug reporter know that
they should change the status back to UNCONFIRMED after they reply
and/or provide the requested info or materials.

3) Add repro needs to the Whiteboard

If the bug requires Windows 7 and you don't have it, please put
'needsWin7' in the Whiteboard. If the bug requires a WebDAV server for
testing, put 'needsWebDAV' in the Whiteboard.

Appropriate tagging of UNCONFIRMED bugs will help the rest of QA
narrow-in on those particular bugs that require certain repro
environments, and let us complete triage more quickly and more
efficiently.

4) Use [hard to reproduce] in the Summary if testing with the same setup

If you test a bug using the same software and OS versions as the bug
reporter (e.g. LO 4.3.2 + Win7) and can't reproduce the problem, feel
free to add [hard to reproduce] at the end of the Summary.

This tag provides a visual clue to the rest of QA that this bug is
unlikely to be easily reproduced, and that unless they're looking for
a big challenge, they should spend time triaging other bugs.

[Libreoffice-qa] Bugzilla Versions: 4.5-master vs. 5.0-master ?

Hi all,

Raal brings up a good point regarding versions in Bugzilla: We're
jumping right from 4.4 - 5.0, so 4.5.0.0alpha0+ has just become
5.0.0.0.0alpha0+ (master) in daily builds.

There are a few different ways we can deal with this change in
Bugzilla. Should we:
- Just rename the version in Bugzilla?
- Add the new version as a separate entry?
- Use a combo like 4.5.0.0/5.0.0.0 Master ?

We have
17,892 total user accounts in Bugzilla, comprising
536 users who have successfully migrated from FDO,
17,002 who haven't, and

In terms of activity, we've had

I think people want to make it easier for newbies who, generally
speaking, only want to file a bug against LibreOffice. The issue I see
is that we have other user-friendly products like the Impress Remote,
and I can imagine that we may have more such products in the future.

I think that perhaps this is a question for the Design Team to help
address. We have full control of the Bugzilla code, so we can always
play around with the first page that people see. Example:

With 4.4.0 just out of the gate, valid new MABs are going to bubble up against
the branch--I just don't see a reason to close them so quickly and then to
depend on someone doing a reverse bibisect and back-port requests.

Regardless of what we mark the bugs in Bugzilla, our fastest tool for
figuring out which commit fixed a bug is by a reverse-bibisect. And
the backportRequest:X.y tag is a very specific way for us to
communicate our intentions with the developers.

We don't currently have a way to indicate a status for each branch
that's active, but if we were to add that, then we could say NEW for
4.4 and RESOLVED for 4.5. I'm not sure of the best way to add that
without making things more confusing... Bugzilla isn't quite that
customizable.

Hi Jay,

I did some tweaking of the config in Bugzilla 4.4.6 to make sure that
bugs would default to UNCONFIRMED when filed, and the simplest method
was to make UNCONFIRMED the only choice for a newly-created bug. You
can always create the bug, then change status to NEW afterwards. Or do
a bulk-change, if you're filing a bunch of reports at once.

From my understanding, the difference I saw on the backend is related
to changing bug workflows that have been introduced to Bugzilla in
modern versions. We can try to bring back the ability to set bugs to
NEW during filing, but I think it's worth our time to also take a look
at the suggested workflow in Bugzilla, and see if we might wish to
adopt it.

Anyone can check out the tdf-bugzilla repo. I think that I might need
to set up some code review via gerrit for patches, but I've been kept
busy with Bugzilla and other QA tasks in the last couple weeks --
guess I'll file a task for myself in Redmine to get gerrit working :-)

For the time being, if you've already submitted a contrib statement as
a LibreOffice developer, feel free to send me patches via email and
I'll review and merge them in. If stuff isn't MPL, or you didn't write
it, then we'll need to discuss further.

AFAIK there's no legal requirement to upstream our patches to
Bugzilla, but we're definitely in favor of it!  (Especially as it
reduces the size of the patchset we have to migrate from one Bugzilla
release to the next)

It's indeed frustrating to go through the work of the Bugzilla
migration, only to run into the challenges presented by a split
bugtracker. Two bugtrackers may not be ideal, but there are some

* Set up LDAP to allow shared logins for both trackers
* Decide on protocol for dealing with bugs misfiled in the wrong tracker
* Make sure that QA and other groups feel welcomed to file bugs and
enhancements in redmine, particularly against Bugzilla

 So we're only tracking enhancement requests if the reporter can either
 (1) do it themselves; or (2) they can show that it's reasonably
 resourced? I can't imagine a similar strategy working for LibreOffice
 itself - we might as well close 99% of enhancement requests. I don't get

IMHO, just because we're mandated to use a different tool shouldn't
change our policies regarding what's valid. Others with bigger hats
can always override me, but at least for enhancement suggestions
regarding Bugzilla, I'd suggest that we use the same threshold as we
use for bugs filed in Bugzilla.

 So, maybe Im overcautious. ;)

 As an exaggeration: There is a risk that we end up with 20 people working on
 making our Bugzilla nice and beautiful and 1 guy working on triaging
 LibreOffice. Also note that all customization cumulates to create extra pains
 during updates etc.  IMHO we should just keep in mind to keep the fixed costs
 of running our Bugzilla constant and rather low[1].

Sure, there are definitely trade-offs to be had. All of the QA Team
work that will take place in Redmine will be meta-work, and I expect
those tasks will appeal to only a subset of our total members. The
entire goal of the meta work will be simplifying and improving the
effectiveness of QA, so if we end up with a 20:1 ratio of people
improving Bugzilla vs. Triaging, either we'll end up with the best
improvements to any Bugzilla, anywhere, or we'll run out of tasks in a
week!

Now that we've upgraded Bugzilla to a much more modern version, we can
also take a look at our current bug workflow and compare that to the
suggested workflow from Bugzilla itself. It's possible that we might
want to adopt some of the new changes from upstream.

 [1] For example that we ended up with a Redmine/Bugzilla split (which is
 already a simplification over the mess we had before that) is ultimately a
 result of bit too much fast-and-loose play with extending, creating and
 customizing services.

Lesson learned: It's always good to try to plan for the future, and to
involve other TDF/LibreOffice teams when making decisions that impact
them.

I've stubbed-in the basics for the Impress Remote product. Before we
jump in and move-over all of the bugs, let's get our ducks in a row
and our fields set up properly.

1) Are we missing any version #'s?

(Should those all be 'X.y.z alpha' or 'X.y.z final' ? Looks like
that's the naming convention so far, right Cloph?)

2) What Components should this product have?

Here's a start:
- Documentation
- General
- Localization
- UI

3) What's the difference between the Android and iOS ports?

NOTE: Both Android and iOS have been added to the 'OS' field (this is
a global field for all products). Please set this field when
migrating-over bug reports.

4) FirefoxOS? There's some code in there... have we ever built it?

[Libreoffice-qa] Bugzilla: Adopt-a-Component

Hi all,

I just had a quick idea for getting people more involved with bug
triage and testing: Adopt-a-Component

The idea is simple: If you put your name in the table to 'Adopt a
component', you're signaling that you really want to help triage bugs
in that area. Perhaps you have a particular skill with that program or
category, or you're just gung-ho about getting those particular bugs
fixed.

Of course, a person is always free to triage whatever bugs he likes,
but I think that getting people to sign up for a role can be a
positive mechanism to help contributors feel that they have a specific
focus to their work, and to take pride when their component(s) meet
our targets for first response (1 week) and full triage (2 weeks).

Anyhow, stop listening to me blather, and go sign up for your favorite
components!

[Libreoffice-qa] Help me make a 'welcome box' for people redirected from FDO

Bugzilla post-migration is going well. If you've been poking around
the bug tracker lately, you've probably seen a few little fixes and
improvements here and there. Those will continue to trickle-in over
the next few weeks.

Tollef (our awesome contact/sysadmin) at FDO has modified redirect bug
urls for us. So if you go here:

I'd like to put a little infobox (welcome box) up on the screen

right-hand side of the screen. We can add a greeting, and provide some
help for people who might still be unfamiliar with the migration.

I was under the impression that there was some shared code between
Android and iOS, but it sounds like each app is separate, so
(theoretically) they could be separate products. At least for now,
I've made up Components for each one: 'Android app', 'iOS app', etc.
Hopefully those names will help clue-in users that there is a
difference between each product.

Now that leaves an open question about how we should handle version
numbers. (I guess we can use the same #s for each app; there just
won't be correlation between the apps as to what a particular number
means in terms of functionality)

There are some Bugzilla meta bugs being tracked in Redmine, but

The migration was a great success. All of our bugs are now happily living at

Bugs should be referenced using the shorthand tdf#, such as tdf#12345.
On the wiki, you can write {{tdf|12345}} to link to a bug report.

Before you can log-in and start working on bugs, you'll need to reset

Freedesktop.org to TDF infrastructure.

Right now, Bugzilla is up and running at Freedesktop.org. Until the
migration, do all your work there.

People should continue to use Bugzilla at FDO until the migration

What reset? What URL?

Right now, both bugs.libreoffice.org and bugs.documentfoundation.org
are pointing to FDO. This is intentional, and designed to help
simplify the transition from FDO infra to TDF infra.

There's no reason for anyone to try to reset their password before the
migration, as everyone will still need to reset his/her password after
we migrate.

  When should we attempt a login?

After the migration is completed on Saturday.

 As is, have not yet been able to login to the tdf BZ instance--assuming that
 is intended.

Until the migration is done this Saturday, there is no official TDF
Bugzilla yet.

We do have a couple of test installs of the Bugzilla data, and if
anyone wants to poke at the install (db dump is from ~Jan 2nd), please
feel free to try it out here: https://vm150.documentfoundation.org/

NOTES:
1) Please, Please, PLEASE avoid updating existing bug reports in the
test install, as that will send email to anyone cc'd on the
report...and possibly cause some confusion.
2) Things that are okay to do: Creating new bug reports and editing
them, Querying, Creating graphs, etc..
