I have noticed that the Libretto 70 I have now sounds like it is parking
the HD after every access. My Lib 20 does this but my last 70 did not, and
it played MP3's fine when set to 100% CPU - could this be the problem with
the frequent breaks in the playback, and if so, how do you adjust this? thanks!

1. Get rid of all startup programs, virus checkers, TSR's, and other

David,

The price is good but it'll cost nearly that much to convert from pounds (or
other euro currency) to dollars...

P'raps we could organise something where a few CDs are distributed - one to
a country - and copied locally? (e.g. send me a blank CD and postage and
I'll send one back full).

Would that simplify matters for you?

Alternatively, maybe other UK wanters could contact me and we can change
cash in bulk?

Either way I want one...

Just in case anyone's already drooling from my prior post mentioning
this
item..

I've been scanning and dumping just about every bit of information I've
collected over the past 3-4 years in print and electronically about the
Libretto into my PC, including information from hard to get Japanese
magazines
and web sites that are no longer.

At this time, I've got about 525MB of raw information in my Libretto CD
directory, and when I've finished scanning in a couple inches more of
clippings
and documents, I'll hopefully have a very raw Libretto Information CD-ROM
available to offer everyone by or before the year end. (ie. no in-depth
directories, explinations, translation, or whatever - just the raw
documents on
this first version)

Later on, I'll consider adding improved naviagtion, links, directory
lists,
etc. for easier access.

If you own a web site or have a collection of unique Libretto info that
you'd
like included on this CD, let me know.

Note that this CD is not produced for profit, is for personal use only,
and
all rights remain with you. No, you nor I will be making any money from
this.
I'm just giving people a convenient way to get at this information rather
than
sit and download for years and years (like I did ;), and offering you a way
to
get it out to Libretto enthusiasts wanting more information on their
babies.

At this time, I'm considering a flat $10-20 charge for each CD to cover
just
the reproduction, mailing, and handling charges involved in duping this CD
for
those that want it (okay, maybe a few extra bucks to pay for the candy bars
I've been munching, too). Hopefully, the time I've spend on this is worth
this
amount.

External monitor and win2k

Does anyone have any idea how I can switch to the external monitor on
the fly using win2k. Everything works really well on the lib except
this. I think I have to get the Lib utils but I haven't been able to
find any that work on the tosh site.

Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Brad: How is he going to recover his candy expense under your plan? I
think
he is well in the hole without of pocket expenses before he makes the
master.
I would like to pay him back in some small way for all the time his
collection has saved me over the years.

I'll send him a box of candy bars! What's your favorite, Dave?

Have you heard of Mallo Cups?

Re: sound

2000-10-27 Thread David Chien

Date: Fri, 27 Oct 2000 11:07:46 -0700 (PDT)
From: David Chien [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Re: sound

I have noticed that the Libretto 70 I have now sounds like it is parking
the HD after every access. My Lib 20 does this but my last 70 did not, and
it played MP3's fine when set to 100% CPU - could this be the problem with
the frequent breaks in the playback, and if so, how do you adjust this?

Well, it depends on if the entire MP3 song is loaded into memory or not.
If not, then frequent HD head parking (or banging/failure) will interfere
with proper HD access.

At the very least, I'd start with the HD and see if there is anything wrong
with it. If it is an IBM, you can download diagnostics at www.storage.ibm.com.
 Maybe true with other brands.

Then, I'd run a HD test program (maybe HDspeed?) to see what the average read
transfer rates are like across the entire HD. That way, you'll know if the
averages are high enough to support mp3 playback or not, and if there's
anything wrong with the HD. I'd say at least 2-3MB/SEC sustained? (anyone else
know of more exact values?) more is better.

If the HD is working fine, then its back to software. At this time, I'd
download DOSAMP or any DOS mp3 player and try that out in pure DOS-only mode
w/o windows running. DOSAMP must run perfectly or you've got some sort of HW
problem going on - either bad HW or just too slow (which it shouldn't be as
everyone else can run MP3's just fine on similar systems).

Maybe a full listing of the specs of your Libretto (RAM, HD size model,
etc.) as well as OS version, and all running software will help us dignose from
afar.

The price is good but it'll cost nearly that much to convert from pounds (or
 other euro currency) to dollars...

I was thinking of using PayPal for those in the US, CCNow for those outside
the US.

P'raps we could organise something where a few CDs are distributed - one to
a country - and copied locally? (e.g. send me a blank CD and postage and
 I'll send one back full).

I'll add that to my considerations.

I no money is to be made from this thing, why not just let me post it on
keep it online on my web server site for 1 month or so, just let me know.

I'll add that to my considerations as well. Few people have T1/DSL/Cable
connections or the willingness to sit for a couple hours to download - but hey,
if you're offering the whole hog, then I'll consider this option strongly.

I would think a standard ISO file image would be the ideal method as all
popular CD recording programs can handle them and burn the image to a CD-R.
( Also, it would be a massive pain in the butt to download the thousands of
individual files to your HD to burn yourself (given that most people are on
Windows OSs based on my web site hits, not Linux/Unix, on which it would be a
boringly simple thing to do). )

I'm willing to host it (just have to ask my provider real nice - in the
 US, east coast).

I'm willing to duplicate it for others (with David's permission).

I'm keeping that in mind! Just be careful what you offer - in case thousands
of quiet Libretto owners suddenly decide to download 650MB+ of ISOs all at once
;)

Baby Ruth or Peanut MMs for the US stuff. Otherwise, KitKats, but the
British version, which are less sweet and have a more sophisticated dark
chocolate taste. (Yep, I was suprised myself when a bloke told me in London to
try one right away as he found the US version to be quite different when he
visited the US.)

Re: Hibernation partition on a large disk

2000-10-27 Thread Andre van Straaten

Date: Fri, 27 Oct 2000 19:24:12 -0500 (CDT)
From: Andre van Straaten [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Re: Hibernation partition on a large disk

I don't think BIOS creates a partition to hibernate at all. It just
write
directly to the area where it thinks it should be.

What I plan to do (and the only safe method I can think of), is
to create a small Unix partition at the start of the disk, write
a bit code to fill the rest of the disk with a known byte pattern,
then run a similar bit of code to report the range of physical
addresses that have been changed after a hibernate.

It won't be quick, but it should answer the question once and for
all.

When I installed FreeBSD relaese 3.3 on my Toshiba Libretto 50CT notebook,
I had to generate a second raw hibernation partition.
The raw hibernation partition generated by Windows 95 is not used by the
BIOS when hibernating in FreeBSD. Instead, the hibernation data are
written into the "/usr" slice which destroys the main partition and leaves
only a rudimentary operating system in "/root".
This happens indepedently from having APM enabled or not as it is a BIOS
function. If you have re-compiled your kernel with the APM option, the
only difference is that you can manually hibernate before your battery is
empty.
To avoid crashing the hibernation data into my "/usr" slice, I generated a
second raw hibernation partition from the FreeBSD installation program.

The HD used has 4 GB.

I agree that we can easily contribute to his effort, but CD's are so 90's!
- I would prefer to download it - give my satellite a workout! Then I can
make my own CDR.
