Subject: Heat

I recently got a Libretto and am wondering about the amount of heat it
generates. The machine is a 100CT, 64MB, 2GB. I use it with a Linksys
wireless PC card. I have installed CPUIdle. The Lib gets rather warm on
the center of the underside, about where the silver data sticker is
located. Not quite "hot" but "warm", say like the outside of a
thick-walled mug of hot coffee. Sometimes I leave it on in the USB docking
station and when I remove it, that part of the machine is verging on "hot",
say like a tall glass of just-poured hot tea - you can hold it, but you'd
sort of like to put it down. My questions are, first, is this normal?
Second, suppose one disassembled the Lib and drilled a grid of ventilation
holes in the plastic case - would that effectively cool the machine? If
so, where should the holes be drilled?

I hope you can give me some clarification here. Let's assume that AC
power is being used and the machine is suspended to RAM. Could it not stay

powerup problem

From: Tom Dixon <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: powerup problem

I have a 100, and just recently it started having issues starting up.

When I first turn it on, 80% of the time the lights flash, but I never get any
screen, nor does it ever hit the disk. I pull the battery, put it back, and
turn it on again, and it's fine. It's never failied to boot on the 2nd try.

It is very frustrating when it happens after saving to disk, and switching to
a new battery, cause it messes up the restore, and I have to boot and fsck
everything (running openbsd).

Any help would be, well, helpful.

David,

A minor confusion here (probably on my part): you say hibernate to disc
lasts only as long as the battery - on the 50, I've swapped hibernated discs
between separate machines without problems, which rather suggests that once
it's on the disc, there it stays. I've only done this with linux - I don't
trust windows to hibernate or restore properly and only do it occasionally.

Unless you've selected very expensive air shipment by second day or faster,
you can easily have the 2lbs. librettos shipped quite cheaply to anywhere in
the world.

eg. recently, I shipped a bunch of Libretto port replicators to France, and
it was only a few dozen dollars for shipment by USPS.

If you buy the 2499U charger new, it comes with a cord for the other side that
plugs into 50/70s to power them while also charging a battery.

Unfortunately Toshiba wasn't nice enough to release a cord for 100/110s.

I've got a spare cord if you want it, just email me your address privately, and
I'll send it over.

They aren't sold retail, except as part of a battery pack, because of their
"frag grenade" tendencies when mis-handled.

Battery life will depend on the age of the pack you are getting the cells from.
The one I got was relatively unused, so seems to work well, but I don't run on
battery power that often anyways.

Just out of curiosity, how's the battery life on your transplanted battery?
I got mine open (thanks for the tips, guys) just for fun, and I'm trying to
decide whether to buy a new one, find one used, or use the components from a
50/70CT extended battery ...

I believe so (I've tried so many on and off until I settled on the 7.1). If
I did, it will have been from a hard disk installation.

The 7.1 was a free with a magazine issue - when I tried to find a web
version of the ISOs recently, I couldn't locate one.

Yep, a Libby 70 here.

I have a Mandrake CD somewhere, so I could try that (dunno which version,
lemme check...
it's version 7.0).

Did you run Mandrake 7.0 successfully on your Libby 70??

load from the hard disk on a 32M machine.

Did it do the selection of the graphics driver? ISTR you're on the ct70 -
you need the chips&technology 65550, which is in the svga driver on 3.6

You might try xf86config or xconfigurator or xf86cfg and see which if any of

Howdy!

Finally I've done the RedHat Linux install, took a loong time to
complete.
It asked for permission to make a bootdisk, but I can't do that as my CDrom
is plugged into the PCMCIA slot, and no space for the floppydrive...

I logged in and expected to see the GNOME GUI, but I only got a commandline
prompt.

Then I tried starting up the GUI, and typed "startx"

resulting in a "Fatal Server Error": Caught signal 11. Server aborting.

I think I'll report to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Any hints??

I'd like to run GNOME.

Cheers

RE: Linux Install?

Date: Wed, 8 Aug 2001 10:12:16 +0200
From: "Robbert J. van Herksen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: RE: Linux Install?

Hi there, Michael.

Now installing RedHat v7.0 Linux on my Libby 70.

I recently bought a Mobile CD-Rom drive (PCMCIA) supported by TOHIBA.

Installed DOS plkus the DOS drivers to access the CD, that worked okay.

I copied the files loadlin.exe, vmlinuz and initrd.img from the first CD,
and started the installation with:

C:loadlin vmlinuz initrd=initrd.img

The kernel started to run, and the installation menu came up, good!!!
After some questions, there was the question: "Do you have a driver disk?"

The next question was: is the CDrom interface SCSI or Other.

I selected "Other", but it wants a driver disk again!!!

RH 7 doesn't seem to be aware of the ATAPI CD-Rom interface, so it doesn't
see it.

How is that with RH 7.1??
Doe sit see ATAPI devices???

Help!!!

(As the installation doesn't allow me to install directly from CDrom, I'm
now copying the BASE and RPMS directories to my Libby HD, that is still in
the process (wow, lots of data!!!), so lets see it I can fire up LINUS that
way.

Would be great to hear your inputs/comments

Cheers

Robbert
