Sounds like you need to back everything up while you still can then try a

I find you have better luck just looking for LiIon battery packs of the same era as
the Libretto in the clearance catalogues of various wholesalers (the local wholesalers
here have a 'sale' every 2-3 months or so when they clear out all the old stuff that
they've ordered in for people but who never end up buying them). Generally in my
experience they've got the same cells as the original Libby ones ... the PA2441U for
the Portege 300 for instance is virtually identical to the L50/70 extended battery,
right down to the power connector. From what I gather, the P300 doesn't have quite the
cult following of the Librettos so I'd imagine there'd be a less of a demand for their
spares hence you may be able to source these packs more easily and/or cheaper than a
Libretto pack.

Hope this helps!

Are you saying you can get individual 3.6 volt AA or A sized
rechargeable Li-ion battery cells? Square or round? With or without
the solderable tabs? If I could get three AA sized cells I could
rebuild easily. Or are you buying pre-built battery packs and
disassembling to get the cells out? If the first where? The Radio
Shack online catalog does not list individual rechargeable li-ion
cells for rebuilding a battery pack. The only lithium rechargeable cell
I have ever found was the lithium metal Tadiran AA rechargeable
and that is not appropriate for rebuilding because it has differant
charging chariteristics than li-ion. I am not interested in doing the
second- too expensive with no guarentee the cell or cells will fit or
even work. I might as well buy a new battery pack or get mine
rebuilt instead of going that route.

[LIB] PCMCIA under DOS drivers

Figure I'm going on a massive C&S hunt to find all the possible drivers a
Libretto users would need to get the PCMCIA slot going under DOS, so I've
grabbed one big 15MB pack and dumped it there.

Basically the cardwizard/cardsoft stuff one would need for the PCMCIA
slot itself. Drivers for the cards themselves come with the card seperately.

Extensive search of past posts found this russian guy's d/l that
he say's works for the L100.

got a whole bunch of C/S files offline that I'll soon add.

Hey Neil, thanks for the 7.1 tip.

As to the hd problem, the problem came about from not making all of the necessary
changes to lilo when I
transfered the HD from my desktop to my libby. Now I can get on to the fun stuff:
congiguring X and speech
recognition software.

Any experience voice-rec software under *nix. Are there any apps in particular to

  They're good. Reliable and responsive.

No. Not released outside Japan by Toshiba yet.

> Is there any risk that the hibernate will destroy any other partition

> mounting them in a desktop PC and so on

Possibly E: if the other end of the hibernation data gets written <8.4GB,
which on my L110 gets written to about 1010-1040 cylinders.

You can always use WinHex to walk the sectors after zeroing out the free
space on these partitions to see if they get accidentally overwritten.

I'd say 1024 cylinder with 100MB unpartitioned for hibernation data on either
side will definitely protect your partitons.

  --

For those without windows 2000 or wanting to go through this trouble, simply
use Partition Magic or free Ranish Partition Manger to create additional
partitions beyond what fdisk can handle, and use
http://160.87.24.214/ezdrv909.zip to install EZ-BIOS 9.06 onto >8.4GB HDs to
allow any OS to see space beyond the 8.4GB point.

Works for me, and even simpler than installing Win2K partway, on my Hitachi
20GB in my L110.

Most memory that old and from highly rated Ebay sellers can generally be
trusted for non-critical applications, IMO. Cells that old ain't gonna have
hardly any timing problems to boot, given that they'll only run at the, hmm,
what? 16-33Mhz bandwidth as I recall?

The only thing to do right after you get it in with any RAM?
http://www.simmtester.com/

And run the free DocMemory RAM testing program overnight.
 If there's any problems with the RAM, it'll show up in the stress test;
otherwise, you can kick back and enjoy the savings.

Re: [LIB] L100 /70 Battery?

2002-01-16 Thread David Chien

From: David Chien <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Re: [LIB] L100 /70 Battery?

If nothing else, the latest Toshiba accessories catalog that came with a new
Satellite 3000 series (very nice I might add, 1Ghz, SmartMedia flash card slot,
DVD/CD-RW, 14", touchpad (at last!), etc.) still has the memory listed for the
L50/70/100/110 series for sale.

But this is the usual Kingston memory, KBT/16 or /32 I believe, so you can
search for a lower price online through www.yahoo.com searches.

--

Beyond that, see Xin's website and the Libretto Mailing List archives - there's
been a few handymen out there that have replaced the cells successfully.

--

Also, see my post about "Buy spare parts now" in the archives a few months back
- lists a few places where they still sell a lot of Libretto parts, such as
www.micsol.com which can order almost any part on your Libretto (see my Parts
Diagram on my site below).

[LIB] L3 in Europe / Germany

2002-01-16 Thread Norbert Trautmann

Date: Wed, 16 Jan 2002 18:35:27 +0100
From: Norbert Trautmann <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: L3 in Europe / Germany

Hi,

is there someone in Europe / Germany on this list who owns a Libretto L2
or L3? Where did you buy it? I had a contact to a sales person of
http://www.dynamism.com who offers to deliver to Germany after payment
on a german bank accout. Does anyone has experience with this shop?

Is there a german keyboard available for the L3?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Greetinx

Norbert

PS: I recently installed a 12GB in my L110. Finally I solved the
8.4GB-Problem as follows:
1. Use fdisk to make three partitions C: D: E: with 8.4GB in total
2. Install Win98 from the Toshiba Recovery CD on C:
3. Start Win2000 installation, chose to determine partition before
setup. Some files are copied to the HD, afterwards the setup routine
let's you make partitions in the area >8.4GB. So I made one partition F:
with 200MB for the hibernate, and a last partition G: using the rest.
4. Then I stopped the Win2000 installation, deleted the installation
files from my disk, and deleted the dual boot manager by a "sys c:" with
a Win98-boot-disk.

Is there any risk that the hibernate will destroy any other partition
than F? If not, I think this is a nice way to install big HD's without
mounting them in a desktop PC and so on

I saw talk on this topic a while back, but couldn't find it after a quick
search ofthe archives. I did find one message from Tom Stangl who seems to
have taken the guts of a Lib 50/70 battery and transplanted it... though I'm
not sure if this is advisable.

The archive message from Tom is here:

http://www.technoir.nu/libretto/list/2001/msg02639.html

...you can follow the thread forward and backwards for other messages in the
thread.

Here are a few more links to message threads on the topic:

http://www.technoir.nu/libretto/list/2002/msg00198.html
http://www.technoir.nu/libretto/list/2001/msg02487.html

But hey! Here's an auction for a new battery for a Lib 100 110 on EBay at
$50 with no bids, due to close in 3 days:'

Hey Lee...

I'm guessing that since you've been following the list posts, that you're
aware of dealing with the 8.4GB hibernation area on the new 20GB HDD, right?
If not, there's amble info in the archiove of recent posts. I'll be
playing with this myself soon.

Good luck getting your OS set up. If you have any Windows 95, or Windows 98
installation disks, you can use them as well, and just download the
necessary 100CT drivers from the Toshiba support website. I've installed
Windows 95 and Windows 98 on several hard drives for my 50CT and 70CT, and
have no terrible problems to speak of.

I was able to copy system files (made on another system) and CD-ROM drivers
to my new HDD via floppy, boot the HDD to the C:\ DOS prompt, then access a
Windows 98 disk from the D:\ CD-ROM drive, and then run setup.exe from
there. However the majority of CD-ROM drives don't seem to have drivers
that enable this. I was lucky I guess.

There are several approaches you can take to installing Windows to your new
HDD, most of which you'll find in the archives
(http://www.technoir.nu/libretto/list/). I'm not familiar with setting up a
Toshiba companion CD. But any way you decide to go, if you have any
problems, we'll be glad to help out.

Matt
