Maybe my offering to treat came off as too "needy". Okay, it's your treat.
Any takers? :)

From: "Eiren K. Smith" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Can it do an autoreply (doubling as an unsubscribe autoresponse) to anyone
who is unsubscribed telling them something like, "We have received your
e-mail containing 'unsubscribe' in the subject line. You have been
unsubscribed from the Libretto list..."?

That way people wouldn't accidentally unsubscribe themselves and not be
notified (especially new users in the future that will never read this
thread). (Note: I haven't unsubscribed in a long time, so I don't remember
if there already is an autoresponse for this.)

And/or you could put a line in the standard footer clearly indicating that
"unsubscribe" anywhere in the subject will result in an unsubscribe. You
would probably do that anyway (duh), but it would be cool to do both--the
unsubscribe autoresponse and the notice in the footer.

From: "Eiren K. Smith" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Re: Got it1!

Thanks, Jason. I've been trying that, but no joy. Is there a cylinder limit
past which it will not look for the copied files? My D: partition (where
I've copied the CD files) follows a ~4GB C: partition. Could that be it?

Also, what directory do I need to point to in the "Select Parition" box?
I've tried "RedHat/", "" (no path specified), "RedHat/base/", and
"RedHat/RPMS/". I've also tried all these without the trailing slash. Still
it says either ""Device /dev/hda5 does not appear to contain Red Hat CDROM
images." and
if I type a directory name wrong, I get "Failed to read directory
/tmp/hdimage/: No such file or directory".

Can you or anyone else lend some advice?

That's a good start, Robbert. But I still get stuck when it asks me to
select a partition to install from. It seems to expect an ISO image and I've
only got files copied from the CD--not exactly an ISO image.

I've got an L50. I've put my entire RH 7.1 CD in D:\RH\ (a FAT16 par on my
internal drive). I haven't been successful getting it pointed to the files
on the drive. I've watched case-sensitivity and am pretty sure that's not
it. What do I point it to the the example given above?

BTW, this second par is recognized as /dev/hda5.

Did you do a floppy boot and install from a PCMCIA CD-ROM? If so, what
CD-ROM drive?

If not, would you mind giving some more details.

If it's that easy, I'm gonna get a copy of RH 7.1 tonight and give it a

Unsolicited, sappy, Lib list testimonial

Guys,

I own two overclocked L50s and a Sony Picturebook C1VPK. I like my Picturebook a lot,
but boy, the lack of a list like our list here is a big drawback to using a
non-Libretto sub-notebook.

I intend to hang onto my Libs (and possibly buy more) until their mainboards
disintegrate from old age or the plastic turns to dust, whichever comes first.

Re: Hibernation theory

From: "Eiren K. Smith" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Re: Hibernation theory

Instead of writing ones to the empty area of a partition, you could write a
(huge) file to a partition and fill it with a constant value. Thus, you
could put a big partition near the end of the disk, then write something
quick and dirty in C to create a text file with the character repeated in it
until the file is the same size (or a byte less or whatever) than the
partition it is on. That's a solution for "filling a partition with 1's"
that's easy in any operating system.

Yeah, I already own one. It's a very good solution if you have many friends
or associates with laptops (which, incidentally, I don't right now). It's
also a good as-needed field backup solution, especially for those with
subnotebooks (such as my L50 or my Picturebook). I wish they'd taken off
better in the market--I like the form factor a lot better than Zip media.

Someone else posted to the list saying they're coming out with a 100MB
version this year. That'd be nice (but I'm not buying one, now that I'm the
proud owner of one--and more to come--of the 40MB version.

Plus, they make great gifts at <$20 apiece.

Neil, that's exactly the approach I've wanted to take. Basically, a Linux
install from a FAT. Can you lend any more details about doing this with MDK

Win98 vs Win95 on an L50

2000-06-19 Thread Eiren K. Smith

Date: Mon, 19 Jun 2000 09:39:47 -0400
From: "Eiren K. Smith" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Win98 vs Win95 on an L50

I have an admittedly nebulous problem.

My L50 has 32MB of RAM, is overclocked to 100MHz, and has a new 6GB Toshiba drive. I
used to run Win95 on it with DriveSpace compression on my 810MB original drive.

When I upgraded my hard drive, I decided to move to Win98 (with a FAT32). The machine
now feels significantly slower than ever. I expected Win98 to run slower than Win95,
but it is so much slower that I wonder if there's something else wrong. The machine
actually feels slower than it did with Win95's DriveSpace running heavily all the time
(resulting in major disk access).

At first, I handled a driver problem with the Libretto floppy drive. That handled a
HUGE slow waiting for it to sense the floppy drive (which would inevitably fail
anyway). However, it still doesn't feel "right". Now, many times I'll press a button
in a dialog box and I'll have to wait for sometimes more than ten seconds to even see
the button be pressed. During this wait, the hard drive is seldom, if ever, being
accessed. It's not like with Win95 and my old 810MB hard drive (with or without
DriveSpace), where the disk would be accessed furiously if the machine was making me
wait.

I'm hoping someone else has run into this and that there a there's a solution. I
could, of course, go back to Win95 with this new hard drive to see if it's a perculiar
problem with the new hard drive, but I'd rather not have to do this.

Anyone have any experience?

Yes, but this was a scandisk at boot time (text mode) due to not shutting
down properly. Still true?

L50: Trouble with 6GB drive. BIOS-related?

2000-06-16 Thread Eiren K. Smith

Subject: L50: Trouble with 6GB drive. BIOS-related?

I just put a new 6GB Toshiba drive (MK6412MAT) in my L50 (BIOS 6.50). 4GB FAT32
partition followed by a 2GB FAT16 partition. When checking drive C for errors,
Scandisk gets to 85% of the 4GB partition and then slows to a crawl. Anyone else
experienced this? While it's crawling the HD busy light barely moves. It may go a
minute or more without registering any activity.

It even did this (still at 85%) when I had a 6GB FAT32 partition on this drive.

Any clues?

Installing a new hard drive in L50

2000-06-15 Thread Eiren K. Smith

Date: Thu, 15 Jun 2000 17:09:32 -0400
From: "Eiren K. Smith" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Installing a new hard drive in L50

Libretters,

I am going to be installing a new (empty) 6GB in my L50 tonight. I have Win95 on
floppies and on a CD. I need help/advice regarding the best method to get Win95 onto
that new drive.

I would like to avoid using the floppies. Since I bought it used, I don't have any of
the original CD(s) or floppy(ies) that would have come with my Libretto.

Assets: I have an Adaptec PCMCIA SCSI card and an external SCSI CD-ROM drive. I also
have an Enhanced Port Replicator. I have another laptop with a CD-ROM drive that may
be part of my solution. I can get my hands on null modem adapters and serial cradles,
if necessary.

I don't know anything about enabling PCMCIA services in DOS (to gain access to my CD).
Am I better off installing from floppies than trying to get my machine to recognize my
CD-ROM drive via my PCMCIA SCSI card? Can anyone give me some data on this?

How would you folks get Win95 installed, given the assets I have listed above? The
floodgates are open to suggestions.

Big TIA,

-e.

Thanks, David.

If I can't find what I want soon (auctions are currently my best bet) I will
probably settle for a 4GB, which I have a source for. It hurts, however,
to pay the same for a 4GB this week that I could've paid for a 6GB last week
(if I had jumped on it in time).
