no its a single.. thats why i was saying i like the fujitsu a little better
then the sony.. that and the bigger screen.. so i dont have to carry around
an extra drive just to watch a movie.. plus i keep all our system manuals on
a single cd well more like 4 cd's but anyway even though its only a couple
gig of space its still a couple gig i dont have to worry about and then the
other being the dvd drive so when i am in a plane i can sit back and watch a
movie so i can leave my portable dvd player at home..

Sony has done some things right and some not. My Vaio Z505R (PII 366) only
runs a little faster than my L100. I don't know exactly why this is, but the
HDD seems slow (& loud), and even with a clean system tray the System
Resources report at about 85% maximum. With the same operating system
(W98se) my L100 reports 95%. Not that I have the money now for another
notebook, but I'm leery of Sony stuff, performance-wise.

Interesting. Not sure that I would actually spring for
one. Will have to wait for a US model and see. That
battery pack thingy on the back is hideous though.
Screws up the whole concept in my mind. That mouse
looks a little strange, but should be a little easier
to manipulate than the L100 mouse.

I am sure the screen is going to be quite tiny for
regular use, no wonder they had to incorporate a zoom
feature. Otherwise people would be using the magnifying
glass in Windows accessibility.

Perhaps this will be the shot in the arm to get Toshiba
to come out with a proper modern Libretto. They didn't
release the L1/2/3 series until Sony threw out theirs.
Will have to wait and see.

It also seemed to me from the movie that they were admitting that the
keyboard was too small to touch type. They showed someone typing with their
thumbs more like a palmtop than a real computer.

With regard to previous messages about non-XP OSes and the Fujitsu P series,
I can confirm that Debian Linux runs just fine on the Fujitsu P-2046, the
DVD/CD-RW model with built-in 802.11b. I haven't tried writing CDs or using
PCMCIA yet, but the CD drive works, the ethernet works, X11 works and the
802.11b works.

This looks "kinda neat". Check the following "usage" movie from
Sony:

Pennies being saved right now. The "zoom" button seems pretty
darned cool, and sony are admitting that they have a slight,
er, "challenge" with a 1024x768 in such a small diagonal -
apparently 6.4"?

Definitely worth a very close look.

This appears to be a spiritual successor to the original
libretto, and I'm amazed that Toshiba hasn't done anything
this size since the 110...

No, an LCD is fixed resolution. If you set lower resolution ( 640x480 ) it
would be too large for the screen, you would have to pan like crazy. That
blows.

Higher, and you get black borders.

I dun like your chances ... its probably all soft-this and soft-that ...
all that 'legacy free' stuff (read about all the gripes people have putting
Linux onto Toshiba Satellite 5xxx series laptops for instance).

I find the mouse layout interesting, not only do you HAVE to use it with 2
hands, you'll have an awful time using it on a table.

Speaking of which, is it just me or is the trend in laptops nowadays to
make the FRONT look real thin but the BACK real fat? The back of that Vaio
looks almost 50% thicker than the front! Hardly something to use on a table
(ie. for SERIOUS computing work).

The gripe I have about resolutions is more that you'll have a hard time
clicking on buttons and the like ... the things that WON'T go up with font.

Personally I'd probably stick to the Fujitsu P-series if I was going for
one of those ... if you get the version WITHOUT the CD-burner, its not an
awful lot bigger than that Vaio, the keyboard is a nice size and the screen
has sufficient resolution without making things look too tiny ...

I'd be interested to know if it's a "standard" (ie 9.5mm) HDD, or something

Agreed - though I suspect the logical thing to do is simply use a larger

I'll go along with this entirely - took my Libretto (110) "shopping" and
plugged it into several external TFT VDUs - it was impossible to choose
between 800x600 24 bit ("fuzzy" because I could not find any 800x600 pixel
VDUs, everything was 1024x768 or higher) or 1024x768 16 bit (fixed the
"fuzziness", but simply not enough colours!).

Slight problem, unlike a CRT, the physical resolution of an LCD is fixed in
hardware. To drop resolution, you either get black borders (which defeates
the purpose) or you'll have to map more than 1 hardware pixel to each
software pixel (going from 1024x768 hardware to 800x600 software such as
when zoomed in you'll need to map 1.6384 (1.28*1.28) hardware pixels to 1
software pixel). This invariably means things go fuzzy which just seems to
make things worse for me. Its OK if you're on a 15" 1600x1200 LCD and
you're dropping to 800x600 because you're mapping 4 hardware pixels (2*2)
to each software pixel but if you're already pressed for space it sorta
just gets annoying.

It wouldn't be too bad. A person could always set a lower resolution if it
was bothersome.

Doesn't look bad ... I worry about the screen though, an 800x600 screen at
7 inches is already hard enough on the eyes, I wonder how readable a
1024x768 screen at 6.4 inches would be ...

It looks pretty nice. Its smaller than my 70 and has networking, usb, and a
1024 x 768 screen. The screen is also a tad larger than the 70's. The price
seems reasonable too. Hope they make a US version.
