I can confirm this. None of the MIDI files lilypond are usealbe from
2.7.x They will not play in any aplication I have. Just to try
something else, I imported the file into GarageBand. There is nothing
in the file. No MIDI at all.

Do folks ever use a mix of \relative and absolute when entering music?
If you have:

\relative c {
block of music

{
2nd block of music
}

Is 2nd block still in relative mode?

How would you cancel relative mode?

I would actually recommend you to explicitly write out the \score{...}.
Also, you are exploiting some more features of LilyPond that you
probably don't realize yourself, namely that contexts are created
automatically.

For example, as soon as you include a command like \key in

<<
{
\key bes \major

> ...
LilyPond will create a Staff context (corresponding to a printed stave)
to be able to handle the command. So your score block
is actually equivalent to

\score{
  <<
\new Staff {
  \key bes \major
  ...
  <<
\chordsOne \\
\notesOne
\addlyrics \stanzaOne
  >>
}
  >>
}

In other words, you try to include both the chords and the lyrics
within the stave, which is impossible since a Staff in LilyPond
terminology only can contain notes (I realize some people would
find it more intuitive to use "stave" for the combination of
music and lyrics).

What you probably want is (haven't tested with your code, though)

\score{
  \transpose c bes <<
\new ChordNames {\chordsOne }
\new Staff {\key ... \notesOne}
\addlyrics \stanzaOne
  >>
}

I also recommend you to learn to use \lyricsto instead of \addlyrics as
soon as possible, since \addlyrics is limited to scores with a single
melody.

This is important information: goodies like midi2ly, convert-ly, and
other converters are Python scripts, so you have to have Python
installed to run them.

I suppose of course that you use 2.6.3 Windows native version (it's
possible to compile it on Cygwin...)

You can get Python 2.4.1 for Windows at http://python.org.

> >

For more convenient use, add
\usr\bin\
to your PATH, and add extensions .PY and .PYC in PATHEXT;
you can do this in Control Panel -> System -> Advanced
-> Environment variables -> System variables

Open a command line (cmd32.exe) and run:

midi2ly your-midi-file.mid

I have tried this... and :-( got this error message:

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/midi2ly", line 42, in ?
import midi
ImportError: No module named midi

It's a bug: on my Linux system there is exactly the same.
Here's a general fix, which I'll submit to bug-lilypond.
Open midi2ly.py and edit these lines:

libdir = '/usr/lib/lilypond/2.6.3'
if not os.path.isdir (libdir):
   libdir = '/usr/lib/lilypond/2.6.3'
sys.path.insert (0, os.path.join (libdir, 'python'))

replace 'lib' with 'share' and save the file.

The last problem is, it won't work on Win XP because there is no python
directory in usr/share/lilypond/2.6.3... and "native Windows" Python may
(?) rather understand Windows-style paths. But you can still follow
these tips: you'll be able then to run convert-ly, and maybe other
Python scripts.

There are here potential improvements to Windows native LilyPond:
- Python could be mentioned as a dependency
- The installation program could set the environments variables like I
explained above
- Python libs (in usr/share/lilypond/2.6.3) could be compiled into
Windows native version too
If it was done, the converters (and even maybe lilypond-book? for those
who have TeX installed) would work as explained in the documentation :-)

This can certainly be sponsored. (but don't ask me, I'm no more on Windows)

Please keep this discussion on the list (Cc all messages to
lilypond-user@gnu.org), it may be interesting for other users.

I have forgotten something in your .ly example below: if you want both
PDF and MIDI output, you must have both \layout {} and \midi {} blocks
in the \score block:

Lilypond responds with this:

How am I supposed to add the lyrics to the music in this case?

One option is to use phrasing slurs, \(...\), for slurs that
shouldn't indicate a melisma and ordinary slurs, (...), for

Note that the current default behaviour in LilyPond corresponds to

I'd be interested in that, too. But so far not interested enough to
actually type in the abc or musixtex.

The other thing I'd be interested in is for each system, seeing both
the "first pass", where you get what the system gives you with no
tweaking, right after you enter the notes right, and the "best effort"
where someone has fixed everything up. I would expect lily to do
really well on the "first pass" comparison.

Well,

I looked at the comparison and my first reaction is
that this is not a fair deal.

They compare gui notation packages with lily?
What about a mup/abcm2ps/guido/musictex/philipswriter

Then we are comparing apples to apples.

BTW some of the outputs in the pdf comparisons were
stinky. LilyPond really does look better then most of
those compared.

that said no word on comparing to SCORE..

[one hour later]

I just dived into fontconfig configuration (http://fontconfig.org/
fontconfig-user.html)...

- Century Schoolbook is nowhere defined.

- Verdana is defined as fallback for sans-serif (but also serif fonts
fall back to Verdana!)

- LilyPond's config sets Verdana as Alias for Helvetica and Arial.
WHY? Verdana is a screen font! (aliasing Arial and Helvetica would be
ok)

- after creating my own .fonts.conf, my additional fonts folders
(e.g. TeX) are searched (i.e. a cache file is created), but the fonts
are still never used: Does LilyPond really make use of fontconfig
settings?

Yes indeed,
what would be nice would be another type of slur for
melismata. or maybe have a slur in the lyrics block,
that would make it an explicit slur for lyrics.

Bug reports on Debian packages should go to debian.
Have you tried the debian package of ec-fonts-mftraced
available an www.lilypond.org? Also, if you search the
mailing list archives, you will find a number of emails
from Debian users who have managed to solve the same
problem successfully.

You'll have to ask Debian (or more precisely, the Debian
package maintainer) about that. Have you tried using
the Lilypond general linux installer from our website?
It should work regardless of the state of Debian packages.

What exactly is the slur here telling lilypond?

slur+lyric=?
It is obvious now that indeed the grace note is not
the issue, but the slur certainly is. The proof is
once I remove the slur all is well. Maybe I should use
a differnt slur, I wonder if \( still exists.

I will see if this helps.

[percent repeats without body]

as Mats pointed, it is of course possible to get this, just by putting
the last measure of the previous material in the \repeat. Of course,
then you can't do

   \fragment
   \repeat "percent" 4 { \skip 1 }
   \otherFragment
   \repeat "percent" 4 { \skip 1 }

to easily repeat the last measure of an arbitrary fragment.

Maybe I should have started with this question, but what do you need the
notation for?

If Mats' trick serves you, then it's ok. Otherwise please let me know,
then I will go ahead with adding the sponsored feature.

 I was hoping that was the answer I would get.
I am notating folk songs where there is indeed such
behaviour, i.e. the singer sings a syllable on a grace
note. Since they aren't trained musicians, I can't
force them to follow the rules, and since I am
notating performance, I need to notate the syllable on
the grace. However the problem isn't here the grace
but the slur. As long as I don't use a slur things
line up a ok.

I will look at the other posts to see if they offer a
solution.

I forgot to mention the version I am using if it
matters:GNU LilyPond 2.7.3

Also I didn't post the source since the lyrics are in
hebrew, if it is relevent I can output a png.

cvs key-change end of line bug

2005-08-18 Thread Graham Percival
You'll probably notice this before 2.7.6 is released, but just in case,
current

cvs has a problem with a key-change occuring at the end of the line:
it leaves space for the key change before the final bar line, then
prints

the key change after the final bar line (but still on the staff).

Erik -- we don't need this in the bugs database. Unless this problem
is still

there when .6 is released. :)

Re: Percent repeat sign

2005-08-18 Thread Mats Bengtsson

Do you want the percent signs already from the firs measure of the
piece? Otherwise, just do
\repeat percent 5 { previous measure }
Isn't this what you actually want to describe anyway? I don't understand
what you intend to use it for otherwise.
Example, a C major scaled followed by 4 bars of repeat signs can be
obtained by
c d e f \repeat percent 5 {g a b c}

Claus Wilke wrote:

Hello,

is it possible to directly engrave percent repeat signs? As far as I
understand, the percent repeat mechanism always first engraves something
(notes, rests, etc.), and then engraves bars with repeat signs. I.e., if I do

\repeat "percent" 4 { r1 }
I get one bar with a rest, and then three bars with the percent sign. However,
I would like to have four bars with the percent sign, and no bar with the
rest. Is there any way to do it?

FYI, I am still on lilipond 2.2, so any answer that works with this version
would be appreciated.

Thanks a lot for an otherwise great program!
