Re: [LincolnTalk] INF: CCBC Has reduced space but questions remain about cost
Hi, Sara, I don't know that I ever had plans or documents with square footage of the Hartwell building, nor do I recall that those figures were in the lease. Magic Garden has four classrooms, an office, a small conference room, and a kitchen in Hartwell. Roughly estimating from the other classrooms, offices, meeting room, and special services rooms (PT, e.g.) on the two levels in Hartwell, I would guess Magic Garden leases 20-25% of the building's usable space. That excludes hallways & stairs and the large, lower-level space used by LPS Maintenance. Outdoors, there is one fenced playground adjacent to the entrance dedicated to MG. Re: [LincolnTalk] INF: CCBC Has reduced space but questions remain about cost
Hi, Andy. Can you please shed light on where you see space for Magic Garden specified? When I look at the building program analysis here: https://lincolncommunitycenter.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/2023-05-17-Programming-Material.pdf I see space for LEAP (after-school care and programming), but not Magic Garden. Where are you looking? Magic Garden is a private, non-profit early education and care organization that leases space in the Hartwell Building from the Lincoln Public Schools. For many years, Magic Garden has undertaken occasional joint programming with the COA that entails intergenerational interaction. This would be facilitated by the COA's relocation to the Hartwell campus, but is not a primary driver of the proposed CC location nor would it entail any dedicated space for Magic Garden in the new center. Perhaps there was some reference to this as an example of an activity that could occur in the new center. Magic Garden has historically also engaged with the Parks & Rec. Dept., for example by using a Pod for indoor physical activity and paying for swim lessons at Codman Pool in the summer. Re: [LincolnTalk] Slack instead of Mailman?
If using Google Groups or Groups.io requires having a Google account and logging in to that, no thanks. As with Slack, that is an extra step, and an extra place to go to read the LT messages. The beauty of the email-based list is that it's right in with other daily communication. It is so basic that it works for all, whereas I suspect any "other 'modern' group communication platform" may require a subscription, which is a turnoff, regardless if it is free. I know some people are logged in to Google all the time, but not everyone wants to do that. Andrew Pang Brooks Hill Road > On 11/14/2022 1:34 PM Jonathan Sheffi wrote: > > > I love Slack. Re: [LincolnTalk] Recommendations for private street snow removal
Dear Jacqueline: While changing providers might be a solution, I think more pertinent is what expectations you set in advance with any provider--and get in writing as commitments from them. Have you discussed what you want with your current plow company? They might be unable or unwilling to meet your standards, or might do so for a higher fee. You'll have to see what your fellow homeowners are willing to pay for. Our homeowners association has a very detailed, 3-page contract with our plow company that spells out what we want from them and they price services accordingly. To be frank, our street is an icy mess now, too. Why? The last snow/sleet/ice storm was less than 2 inches in depth and our contract calls for them to plow only for 2 inches or more--we're unwilling to pay for plowing small accumulations, and usually that works out fine. We also do not require them to pre-treat the pavement before storms, which Lincoln does on public roads and makes a big difference. So, this week our company has done precisely what we asked of them and contractracted for: nothing. Then, sun and traffic caused some melting, which partly refroze before the rains last night. When circumstances conspire in this way, any homeowners can just call to ask for plowing or sanding the road, but the company does not have carte blanche to do services (and bill). Mainly, my point is not to assume that just changing contractors will get the results you seek. Talking it through in detail and getting the agreement in writing is more likely to succeed--whether with a new contractor or your existing one. Re: [LincolnTalk] Spray foam insulation rec?
We used The Green Cocoon over 10 years ago at the recommendation of our contractor. Very satisfied--both then and over time. https://thegreencocoon.com/ Be clear if you want closed cell or open cell foam and what material (petroleum-based [like Icynene brand], chemical-based, plant-based, etc.) you want. Different products are better for different uses, in addition to environmental concerns, and not all companies sell all kinds of products. Re: [LincolnTalk] Cardboard is a precious resource—Please recycle it Lincoln!
I'm confused, Staci. Paper and cardboard used to have a separate container at the dump [sorry, I know it's not one but one syllable is so much easier than four, and everyone understands] but more recently, I thought cardboard goes in with the commingled paper, plastics, aluminum, and steel cans. Re: [LincolnTalk] Next school COVID tests Monday
I would like to point out that emails from Lincoln Schools include the disclaimer, "In compliance with MGL C.66, all email correspondence to and from the Lincoln Public Schools is archived and may be a public record." Because of this, staff do not send confidential information or attachments (such as IEPs or testing results) via email and advise parents not to write anything in an email or send attachments that they do not want made public. So, while emails may be addressed to parents because they are the recipients of immediate concern, they do not contain confidential health information and there is no legal basis for expecting them to remain exclusive to the parent community, and no justification for demanding that they be. I agree with Barbara Low that there is significant public benefit to distributing the "anonymized," summary data about the COVID testing results in our schools and in the Town generally. What is that old advice about never putting anything in writing that you wouldn't want published in the newspaper? The School District and the School Committee member's actions are in line, as is LincolnTalk's permitting the posting. Andrew Pang > On 12/15/2021 3:27 PM Tamika Mayes wrote: > > > Does Lincoln? Re: [LincolnTalk] school raffles
The Town Clerk issues raffle permits, not the state. See regulations here: https://www.mass.gov/guides/guidance-on-raffles And yes, charitable raffles are thoroughly regulated because plenty of people have used "charitable intent" as a cover for fraud. I, for one, am glad that our Commonwealth helps protect kind-hearted people from being "taken," even if it means a bit of paperwork for organizations. It is important to note that the IRS does not consider the price of a raffle ticket to be a charitable donation unless you win the raffle. If you're in North Lincoln and without water, it's because of a break along Route 2-A. Crews are on-site to fix it but the timetable for repair is unknown, according to the Water Dept. Re: [LincolnTalk] We are about to get redistricted… again… maybe… probably
Sara (et al), That map shows not Needham but all of Wellesley and Weston joining the southwestern part of Lincoln (Precinct #1) in the proposed House district. Wellesley voters will surely outnumber Weston and half of Lincoln and be the dominant constituency. Lincoln is small to begin with and I may be naive, but it is hard to imagine an elected official attending much to <1,500 voters in one precinct among 40,000 in her/his district. But you are correct that Alice Peisch currently represents Wellesley. The proposed district is #14, the same number as Ms. Peisch's current district. The map shows Precinct #2 of Lincoln in a proposed district with all of Carlisle, 2/3 of Concord, half of Acton and half of Chelmsford. Lincoln hasn't been split between two House districts in the 19 years I've lived here, but perhaps it was at some earlier time. It would be interesting to learn the experiences of other town split among representatives to see if that earns them more attention (becuase they have 2+ reps looking after their needs) or less (because their voices are diluted).
