instead of her LL Bean Black Women's Large.

Ha!
Glazer… every developer’s favorite economist!

I believe, in fact, he left the Harvard Econ faculty to join the ( pro free-
market/ pro development) Rapport Institute at the Kennedy School.

Gary Taylor and I monitored, with grave concern ( back in the day)his efforts
to undue local zoning that stood in the way of development.
We wanted to maintain our progress move, deliberative approach to creating more
housing opportunities and more affordable housing ( 2 different, but not
mutually exclusive things).

Glazer’s efforts are finally bearing fruit, and we are struggling to manage
change, as we have always done.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Community Center - more in-depth analysis and observations. Is it time for a course correction?

2023-05-10 Thread Fred Hopengarten
Did I miss it, or has no one yet quantified useful spaces at St. Anne’s, the
Stone Church, St. Joseph’s and Codman House, nor mentioned whether or not they
have kitchens that could be used to feed groups.

Plus, there are comparable churches in Wayland and Concord, or the
congregations of Temple Shir Tikva, Congregation Or Atid and the Islamic Center
of Boston in Wayland, as well as Kerem Shalom in Concord – all of which have
gathering spaces, chairs, public address systems, and commercial kitchens, and
all of which have unused time in their gathering spaces.

I’d bet ALL of those religious communities would welcome a bit of rent that
would be less expensive than the interest costs of bonding a major new facility
in Lincoln.

Must a COA staffer be present for all COA and community activities? Is the
over-65 crowd not capable of governing its own meeting? Is a baby-sitter
necessary? Are these places not good enough for Lincolnites?

It seems to me there is no lack of community spaces within five miles or 10
minutes of Donelans.

I have been using COA programming for years…15 or so.
I have enjoyed multiple programs in multiple settings.
How was it possible then, but not now?

Perhaps there needs to be better space for social and health services, and even
administration, but we need to continue with the use of programming in multiple
locations-spaces and locations used in the past, locations that would be of
good use for the future.

We need to be flexible and creative.

I think many of the people complaining about the community center are not folks

Ruth Ann - I can’t speak for others, but I am not disagreeing with the location
of the proposed community center. I agree if one was to be built, the Hartwell
location is the optimal one.

I am disagreeing that we need a community center at all. I don’t think we
should build one. Instead I think we should replace the current “pods” with
new ones to accommodate LEAP and PRD. Keep the existing locations and modestly
expand the footprints. Upgrade the other existing facilities to the extent
needed to accommodate our current programming.

That solution is perhaps $5-8m and accomplished all of the mission critical
objectives.

Candidly, looking at the actual list of programs there are only nine (9) things
on there that can’t continue to stay where they are. And those nine things
don’t even close to justify the construction of a new building, in my opinion.
I’d encourage other taxpayers to look at the list and see if they think it
justifies a solution of the scope and scale proposed.

I think the reality is, because of our small size, our town requires the
“decentralized” approach we’ve used to date.

2023-04-26 Thread Fred Hopengarten
I too use a Google Fi phone. If you travel internationally, Verizon wants
$10/day to switch to an interntional roaming service. If you are gone 20 days,
that’s obviously a $200 cell phone bill, on top of whatever you were paying per
month. Google Fi first seeks out a wifi contact and then makes wifi phone
calls. My average monthly bill around home is USD $24-28. When travelling,
assuming people call me while I in a car and there was no wifi, my bill for
that month might be $35-40 total – for the month.

So you land at the Frankfort Airport, attach yourself to the Airport wifi, and,
with no further ado, you are reachable and can reach out immediately at no
extra charge. Do all the business you want from your hotel room in Paris on the
hotel wifi – no extra charge. Und so fort. Very handy in places like Talinn or
Tel Aviv, where wifi is ubiquitous.

We also had significant cell service issues in Lincoln with Verizon and
switched to T-Mobile. The coverage is much better at the house, but still has
gaps in some areas of town. The T-Mobile plans ended up being less expensive
and also included a number of added benefits, including hot spot service and

[LincolnTalk] Drop a tree?

2022-11-14 Thread Fred Hopengarten
I have two trees in the woods that need to be dropped. No need for the usual
five man crew to cut it up and feed it into a shredder, then rake and clean
up. The wood can be left where dropped. But it will require someone to climb
in order to drop the tree without damaging nearby trees. A truck with boom
cannot be driven to the site.

Anyone know a solo climber who could cut off some limbs as he climbs down?
Both trees are small, one 45' tall, the other 30'.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Natural gas price increase

2022-08-14 Thread Fred Hopengarten
The assertion has been made here on LT that:

“The reality is that US Presidents have very little influence over energy
prices, . . .”

I refer readers to this CNBC (not a right-wing news outlet) report:

“Joe Biden this year revoked a key permit needed for a U.S. stretch of the
1,200-mile project.”
“The Keystone XL pipeline was expected to carry 830,000 barrels per day of
Alberta oil sands crude to Nebraska,”
Source:
https://www.cnbc.com/2021/06/09/tc-energy-terminates-keystone-xl-pipeline-project.html

To get a sense of whether 830,000 barrels per day is a little or a lot of oil,
see

“Biden announces huge strategic oil reserve release to curb gas prices
The unprecedented release of 1 million barrels a day over the next six months
from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve aims to make up for the loss of Russian
oil from global markets amid the Ukraine conflict” (Emphasis added.)
Source:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2022/03/31/strategic-petroleum-reserve-release-biden/
If the President released 1 million barrels per day and claimed it would help
energy prices, and that help is limited to six months, then it is fair to
suggest that 830,000 barrels per day with no time limit should help energy
prices.

[I hate myself for debating national politics on LT. But the facts suggest
that, as long as supply and demand are relevant concepts, less oil influences
energy prices, and more oil influences energy prices.]

Re: [LincolnTalk] Late night helicopter?

2022-07-21 Thread Fred Hopengarten
All pilots, and others too, know that LiveATC.net (referenced below) is a
wonderful resource.

There is a small Lincoln connection.

Live ATC was created by Dave Pascoe, ham radio call-sign KM3T. After leaving
work for the White House Communications Agency, based in DC, he moved to Six
Willarch Road, Lincoln, for several months -- before finding more permanent
digs for himself.

On late night helicopters:

Boston MedFlight
<https://www.bostonmedflight.org/medical-helicopter-transport/> operates
helicopters out of Hanscom as well as other airports. The pattern you describe
however doesn't quite sound like a medevac flight.

If anyone is really curious, you can listen to the live Hanscom tower air
traffic control here:

https://www.liveatc.net/hlisten.php?mount=kbed1_twr
<https://www.liveatc.net/hlisten.php?mount=kbed1_twr=kbed> =kbed

(this requires some experience decoding the "phraseology", but if you listen a
little bit you can get the gist of things.)

What are other ‘good’ firework shows in the area? I know there are lists of
shows on various sites, but I don’t get a good sense of the size of the show
and other intangibles (e.g ease of parking, viewing location comfort). Missing
the Lincoln show!

[LincolnTalk] Old Computers

I have somewhere between four and seven old computers to give away. All more

Need any? Good ideas about a charity that will ship them to a school or
