[LincolnTalk] in-home chef/food drop off service?

2024-06-24 Thread Rachel Shulman
Dear All,

A close friend's wife was recently diagnosed with cancer, and one of the
ways we're thinking of to take the daily load off his shoulders is to help
him find someone reliable who will prepare and deliver high quality,
healthy meals.

I feel certain that private, home catering has to be a thing, but I wasn't
sure how to find it, since I expect that this sort of thing is probably
best found through word of mouth.

Thanks in advance!

Best,
Rachel

[LincolnTalk] Does your rising senior need help w/college application essays?

2024-05-14 Thread Rachel Shulman
Hello Lincoln,

I know that it's a little early, but if you're already thinking about your
teen's college applications, I wanted to share with everyone that I am
available to help rising high school seniors with their college application
essays this summer. Summer is a great time to get the main Common App essay
done so that students can focus on the smaller supplemental essays in the
fall.

My goal, as a writing coach, is to meet each of my students where they are,
and help them write the best essay they are capable of. I've been doing
this kind of work since 2009, and I've helped hundreds of students achieve
their goals. When we do it well, the college essay writing process can
provide the opportunity for genuine self-reflection and growth.

I ran my own tutoring company for seven years until I began working at MIT
in 2016. Currently, I run an undergraduate research program, including
co-teaching a seminar that focuses on teaching science communication and
self development skills (e.g., time management, priority setting,
reflection, etc.). If you're interested in the rest of my professional
experience, I invite you to read my LinkedIn profile.
<https://www.linkedin.com/in/rachel-shulman-82a3729/>

I always offer a no-charge consultation, and I'm happy to meet in person or
over Zoom. I'm also happy to provide references.

I look forward to speaking with you to learn how I can help your teen
achieve their goals.

Best,
Rachel

Re: [LincolnTalk] Commuter Rail

2023-10-29 Thread Rachel Shulman
For what it's worth, until our move this week, I lived a 2 minute walk from
the Commuter Rail station, but I found that the train didn't run often
enough to be helpful to me (I work in Cambridge). I've taken the train a
few times when using my car wasn't a choice and it was miserable. Based on
reports from friends, it is also not reliable enough for me to plan to take
it when, say, I have to be on campus on time to teach - there's no wiggle
room on that one. Finally, I need to take the Red Line a few stops, and it,
too, has not been reliable enough to count on. And, personally, I find the
noise of the train and the T overwhelming and incredibly stress-inducing.
This doesn't even take into account the cost - even with a heavily
subsidized pass, I wouldn't save enough money on a per-trip basis to induce
me to stop driving. Since early 2017, I have worked in climate education,
with the goal of fighting the climate crisis, and even I can't bring myself
to use public transport anymore. My goal now is to budget wisely enough to
be able to buy an electric vehicle in the next few years - I can't even
wrap my head around how much would have to change to get me back to taking
public transport on a regular basis (before the pandemic I lived in
Arlington and ONLY used the bus/T to get to work. Even then the noise and
the crowds were awful, but given that my T-pass was free, I couldn't
justify EVER driving to campus.)

Building more housing by the train station (or in other parts of Lincoln)
is, in my own opinion, truly necessary for a host of reasons, but for it to
really work, we need to figure out how to get our elected officials to make
the train easier to use - it needs to run more often, more reliably, at a
more affordable rate, and, for me, at least, it needs to be quieter.
Without serious improvements to our public transport infrastructure,
building more housing only solves one part of the issue (the stupidly tight
housing market) without considering the larger structures in which that
housing is situated.

Just my $0.02. :)

Best,
Rachel

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a tutor for a middle schooler for

Re: [LincolnTalk] Child’s swim lessons

2023-07-10 Thread Rachel Shulman
Hi Rob,

Codman Pool, here in Lincoln, offers youth programming. I don't have any
first-hand knowledge of it, but I sure that others on the list can speak
about it: https://lincolnma.myrec.com/info/default.aspx

MIT offers youth swim classes. I've been swimming there for almost 7 years,
and the pool is always clean. I have taken private lessons as an adult, so
you might be able to get private lessons for a child, too:
https://www.mitrecsports.com/work-out/instructional-programs/
It's about a half hour drive when it's not rush hour, and there's almost
always meter parking on Albany Street, which parallels the street (Vassar)
where the gym is.

The Y in Burlington also has youth programs, but I can't speak to the
quality - I only know it exists. https://www.gbymca.org/programs/aquatics/

I hope that's helpful!

Re: [LincolnTalk] ISO Caterer

Hi Linda,

I work with a bunch of caterers bc of my job at MIT, and I have always had
good experiences with Basil Tree and Cafe Luna. Not only are they reliable,
they are also great about allergens. Basil Tree has a sustainability focus,
and Cafe Luna is woman-owned, if such things are important to you. A number
of years ago I worked with Via Lago, but I can't speak for their quality
now.

https://www.basiltree.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Basil-Tree-Menu.pdf
Jaime, the catering manager with whom I've worked, is fantastic.

https://www.cafeluna-centralsq.com/catering
Teri, the owner, is always super responsive.

I also know that Codman Farm has started doing prepared food. Perhaps they
could put together something for you.

I hope this is helpful!

[LincolnTalk] do you have yarn you'd like to get rid of?

2023-01-31 Thread Rachel Shulman
Hello Lincoln,

I work at MIT, and have been helping to teach a beginner yarn class the
past few weeks. Our last class is this Friday, and we're going to hold a
yarn swap. If you are a knitter/crocheter with some yarn that you KNOW
you're never going to use, I was hoping you might consider donating it. I
know that our students will be very grateful.

If you would like to take this opportunity to de-stash, I'd be glad to stop
by and pick things up, or you can leave them on our front porch.

Thank you for considering!

Best,
Rachel

[LincolnTalk] advice on getting to the airport at 2AM in January?

2022-10-06 Thread Rachel Shulman
Dear All,

I am hoping that someone here can help me and my partner figure out a good
solution for getting to the airport at 2AM in mid-January. We're concerned
that there won't really be an Uber/Lyft available at that hour. On the
other hand, parking at the airport seems quite expensive ($25/day for
economy, at 8 nights), and the one car service company I talked to wants
$229 each way.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Re: [LincolnTalk] SAT Prep

2022-09-26 Thread Rachel Shulman
Hi Wayne,

I have been tutoring the SAT since 2009. I'd be glad to learn more about the
kind of help you're looking for. Between 2011-2017, I ran my own tutoring
company, and, since taking a position at MIT, I've continued to tutor on the
side. I also help kids with their college application essays. My goal is always
to meet the needs of the student in front of me, and I do my best to tailor my
lessons accordingly.

I hope you'll reach out! My number is 217-840-6868.

[LincolnTalk] Anyone interested in going in on an order from Anson Mills?

2022-08-02 Thread Rachel Shulman
Hello All!

I found the _best_ gluten free flour blend
, at Anson Mills, but in order to get
wholesale pricing, I need to order at least 50 pounds of product. I plan to
buy 10 pounds.

Is anyone interested in going in on an order with me? I can't eat most of
their products, but I hear that they're really great, especially if you're
a serious baker.

The retail products page has more detail
about the different flours, but the wholesale page
 has the wholesale prices.

Shipping is NOT included, but the more people who are interested, the more
people who can share the shipping cost. :)

I plan to put in an order by Friday at noon, so please let me know by then.
And if you have questions, feel free to text me at 217-840-6868.

Thanks!

[LincolnTalk] Will anyone need moving boxes in the next week?

2022-04-05 Thread Rachel Shulman
Hello Lincoln!

we just finished moving on Saturday, and I'm going to have a lot of super
strong boxes that were originally used to transport frozen meat. In other
words, they're insulated, which makes the cardboard very study. We also found
that they were really the perfect size for books and dishes - they don't end up
too heavy.

If you're interested, please text me and I'll leave them on our front porch for
you. 217-840-6868.

Thanks!

Re: [LincolnTalk] College counselor

2021-10-28 Thread Rachel Shulman
Hi Matina,

I've worked as a private tutor and essay coach for high school students for
over a decade, and I've met a number of private college counselors along
the way. Below is a list of the ones I know and trust. They are all very
good at what they do and they all care deeply about their students. The
difference is in their personalities, so it's really a matter of the person
with whom you and your teen connect the best.

Keep in mind that if you are looking for help for this cycle, they might
not have capacity. If you are, in fact, looking for help this cycle, and
none of them are available, let me know, and I'll do some digging. If
you're just looking for help with essays, I have a few slots still open.
Good luck!!

[LincolnTalk] Is anyone interested in buying KN95 masks in bulk?

2021-09-24 Thread Rachel Shulman
Dear All,

I plan to order white KN95 masks on Sept. 30 from Bona Fide Masks (I have a
coupon for 10% off that expires on 10/1). (The price seems to vary day by
day. At the moment, the white ones are cheaper, but if that changes, I will
buy black.)

The more I buy at once, the lower the price per unit. Is anyone interested
in going on an order with me? I plan to order 100 for myself. If you tell
me how many you might want (in units of 10), I can see if we can get up to
200, 300, or 500 (or more - those are their increments - at each step, the
price goes down).

Read more here: https://bonafidemasks.com/Powecom-kn-95/

You can venmo me or we can settle up for cash in person. Codman Farm is an
easy place to meet. :)

*Please let me know by 5PM on 9/29 if you’re interested in joining me and
I'll let you know what the final price is. *

Thanks!

Re: [LincolnTalk] Coyotes

2021-08-21 Thread Rachel Shulman
Dear All,

It depends. The laying flock has a guard dog, Sophie, specifically trained to
guard chickens. In addition, there are multiple electrified fences around them.

The chickens raised for meat are in enclosed coops. I haven't been out there in
a while, so there might be fences there, too, but I'm not sure.

I'd be happy if the coyotes managed the problem.

Re: [LincolnTalk] borrow a bike rack?

2021-07-21 Thread Rachel Shulman
Hi Diana,

I'd be glad to lend you ours. :) It's not in the best condition, and it will
only hold two bikes, butt if you'd like to borrow it, just let me know.

Best,
Rachel

Re: [LincolnTalk] ISO knitting repair

2021-07-19 Thread Rachel Shulman
Dear Fran,

It's possible I could fix it for you, and if not, Annie, the owner of
Mind's Eye Yarns (mindseyeyarns.com), in Porter Sq., also does repairs (for
a fee). Full disclosure - she's a professional, and I'm an avid amateur.
But I'd be happy to try to help.

Best,
Rachel

Can this knit top be saved?
Would appreciate a proficient knitter to repair it.
Please text or leave message.
Thank you,

Fran
