RE: nt

2001-07-12 Thread Chris Aernoudt

Indeed, what Al says is very correct.
I wrote one yesterday, and it works fine on both platforms.

You must have overlooked something, like putting the Xtras on the same
level, or maybe you've put the mac xtra's on the PC side???

You should double-check the whole thing, it works for sure.
I use toast deluxe 4.2, and I never had problems, except for having to write
the CD again because I had forgotten a file here or there.

Chris.

sounds to me like you have built this big honking projector & not
included all the Xtras that are required. go to the MM site & search
on Xtras in the Director section. read the stuff on how to put
together a projector & put the required Xtras in an Xtras folder.

That is the #OSMenu widget and is actually used for contextual menu pop-ups,
but you can fake it as a menubar drop-down.

But I believe there is a combobox in the OSControl Xtra. It's the
#OSpopupMenu widget which acts like a combobox in windows and a pop up menu

RE: combo box

Well, whatever the common usage, technically a combo box is a combination
of an input field and a drop-down list, like a font size selector. More to
the point is that OSControl (http://www.peghole.com/xtras/osc_xtra/ email:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]) includes two kinds of drop-down menus--one like the the
font selector in Director, and the other like a menubar drop-down menu. I'm
using both, and they work great. But I don't think there is one control
that can be properly called a combobox. Still, I am a very new (and very
happy) user of OSControl, so you may want to write to OSControl people and
ask. Their customer relations are superb.

It is part of a series of xtras by mediaLab, that let you apply effects
such as motion blur, ripple etc to 32 bit images. The cast members have to
be alphamania-ized before you can manipulate them with the effects. The
only way I have found so far is to use , in insert media element, the
subaction, alphamedia, based from a DXR. I do not know how, or if it is
possible to automate it so that if I have external picts, I can work with
them as well.

methinks yes.
put all of the xtras, for both platforms, in one xtras folder, and put
both projectors at the same level as that one xtras folder.
the mac side/ windows side thing controls what the user sees, but all
xtras should be in the same folder.

i think that the nt side is for some reason looking at the xtras folder
with the mac xtras and then is unable to use them. just a guess, really.

but try it and see if it fixes it...

RE: Writing text around a curve - is it possible?

The only way I can think of doing this is to actually have a text/field
member for each character... You would specify the radius from the inside of
the CD and then align the individual characters with their respective
location/rotation and offset.

I found the problem!

Why do I get broken audio when I have a
music track playing in a loop under
a vo read?

Something in your main movie has been
corrupted! I set all the movie properties
the same as well as all the extras and
anything else that I could to make it
the same. I still had the problem.
When I created a new movie from
scratch it cleared the problem. Why some
movies have problems clearing things and
other don't?

Re: StreamingMedia or MpegXtra?

2001-07-12 Thread Robert Wingate

> I first get an error that ActiveX is not installed (although I know it
is)

ActiveX Xtra is not shockwave-safe. That means that while you CAN stream
your video from the web into your Director .exe, you can't do it from
shockwave.

But if you just want to play the video on a webpage, I'd suggest you
bypass shockwave, and embed the Windows Media Player ActiveX control
into your HTML page instead of your .dir.

Explanation: ActiveX Xtra allows you to embed ActiveX controls of any
sort into your Director application, including ones that are not safe
for shockwave. That's why the Xtra is not marked as safe. However, the
WMP ActiveX control itself _is_ safe for web security standards. So you
can embed it into your webpage, without the added overhead of shockwave,
and it works in Mac browsers too.

If you need interaction between your .dcr and the video, you may be able
to facilitate that communication through the webpage.

One solution is the progress copy xtra from
updatestage.com. It does cost $200 but gives you an
automatic progress display that can be customized to
match your gui interface. The sample can be downloaded
for free and includes the behaviors (lingo code) with
it. It's a bit of a pricey solution but I bought it
planning to use it over and over. Have fun!

Re: FileIO problem

2001-07-12 Thread R. Bhakti Klein

you can convert the whole list to a string

myList =  ["0": "werwerwerwer", "1": "joko", "2": "fghfghfhfgh"]
myString = myList.string

then myString = "["0": "werwerwerwer", "1": "joko", "2": "fghfghfhfgh"]"

and should be able to write that out.

then, when you read it in, convert it back to a list by calling

myList = myString.value

PPT being PowerPoint? Meaning that what you really want to do is copy the
file from the CD to the hard drive?

If so, you can use the FileXtra Xtra (free, comes with Director or can be
downloaded, depending on what version you have) to put up a save dialog and
to create the folders and copy the file.

Don't put a black Flash movie in the Director timeline! Actually paste
it into the start of the QuickTime video using the "paste" or "add"
command in QuickTime Player Pro. You'll need to compress the video
beforehand, either with Cleaner or by exporting from QuickTime Player
using the Sorenson codec. For a 56k connection, you could try exporting
at a quality of maybe 10, at 3 - 4 fps, and a data rate limit of 4
Kbytes/sec, at a dimension of 160 by 120 (which you could later, after
export, resize and save at a larger size to put in your Shockwave
movie). Open the resulting QuickTime movie in QuickTime Player and
choose "movie info", then go through the options to find the overall
data rate for the QuickTime movie. If its greater than 4 - 5 Kbytes/sec,
then chances are that the video will not 'stream' inside a Shockwave
movie, or even be jumpstarted into playing with Lingo, until several
seconds (or minutes) of the video have downloaded.

hi list,

does anyone have experience in resizing the stage to the resolution of the monitor. i
am currently doing this by setting the loc of each sprite involved to a percentage
ofthe width and height of the stage "on preparemovie". this seems to work reasonably
well. only that if a sprite shows up in the score it is back to the original [position
dictated by the score.

i do not really want to loose what happens in the score and convert the director movie
into a lingo only one, because it includes animations, etc which were used on th first
version of thsi cd-rom.

any ideas?

Now I think we're onto something. However, I first get an error that ActiveX
is not installed (although I know it is), then the streaming is very jerky

be.

Any suggestions?

I tried that, with the same results. I placed a 5 second all black flash
movie in the first frame (which works fine), the QuickTime move kicks in at
5 seconds and .nothing. Black screen, Dead space.

but, thanks for your suggestions.

I will keep on trying. If I find a solution I will be happy to post it.

sendSprite will only send a message to scripts *attached* to that sprite. I

Re: DATABASE.... (Complex Database)

2001-07-12 Thread Pete Carss

If you import the .txt file into a member you can then do
operations on the .text of that member. if you set the itemdelimiter to
"TAB" you will be able to use chunk expressions and everything between
the TABS will be "items". The "RETURN" will signify each "line" in chunk
terminoligy. Using a combination of these you should be able to pull
everything you need out of the file. With regards to you your second
question - if you put the above lingo in a loop, you can then spin
through all the lines checking particular items for a particular string.
Maybe making a list of succesful line numbers:

repeat with i = 1 to textmember.line.count
-- if we wanted to know if the 3rd column contained "tracey"
if member("textmember").line[i].item[3] = "tracey" then
successList.append(i)
end if
end repeat

at the end of this successList should contain a list of line numbers
that have "tracey" in the third column

RE: Re: QuickTime path names on Mac

2001-07-12 Thread Natalia Tjelum

This was my solution as well, I did the pathnames in the
preparemoviehandler, to go explicitly for the cd, like
member("NameofMovie).patname= NameofCD:FolderWithMovies:Moviename.mov, oddly
enough, this didn't work when I used the moviepath, or @, but it only has to
run from the cd, so this solution is ok for this project. As long as no one
tries to copy the cd content to a different location...
Anyway, it is done now.

Thanks for all the help to all of the list!!!

Subject: Re: QuickTime path names on Mac

Hi Natalie,

Picked this thread up in the middle, but rest
assured Director has ALWAYS had problems linking external movies. And I've
been using it since version 1.0! Why for the life of me version 8.0 should
still have problems, well it's not for us mere users to ask is it?

I have had very similar problems recently in
Director 8, burning ISO/Hybrid CD-ROMs with Toast. My solution to the
problem was to explicitly set the fileName's for the respective movie
members in the "on prepareMovie" handler

 eg for Mac:

member("myQuickTimeMovie").fileName = "My Mac:My
folder:Movies:myQuickTimeMovie.mov"

for PC:

member("myQuickTimeMovie").fileName = "C:\My
folder\Movies\myQuickTimeMovie.mov"

This adds a little time to starting the movie as it goes through each movie
member setting the file link and you can't put a movie in the first frame as
it doesn't do all this linking before realizing it can't find the link for
the movie in the first frame. This seems to be in contradiction to the fact
that it should be evaluating everything in the "on prepareMovie" handler
before the first frame. It probably sends off a thread to check the links
whilst it carries on with prepareMovie.

Sounds like you've solved it, but we've all had this
problem sometime or another.

 Cheers. Simon Buckingham.

Subject: RE: QuickTime path names on Mac

Ok, now I am pretty tired of this problem. I have isolated the problem to be
the actual burning of the CD, I am using Toast, and have tried burning it
both as an ISO, and as Hybrid, non of which worked, but if I burn it as a
Mac volume, it works! Why?

This is what I found on the technotes:
Why won't my Quicktime movies play once they are put to CD? Everything else
works fine...
This reported by a customer. Problem: When a project that works fine from
the hard drive is put to CD-ROM and subsequently run on CD-ROMS other than
the CDR on which it was created, the Quicktime movies in the Director movie
do not play, much like one would expect when running such a project on
Windows without the Quicktime For Windows driver installed. When the project
was subsequently copied from the CD-ROM back to the hard drive of the target
machine and worked fine. Through testing they ultimately determined that it
was related to the burn of the CD, an ISO9660 hybrid CD. When they went to
an HFS format, the project worked fine from the CD-ROM. The burning software
was Toast and the burner used was a Philips CDD2000.

Don't know if anyone has experienced any problems with this, and found a
solution.

Re: cannot open projector file

2001-07-12 Thread Slava Paperno

Kirk,

Xtras are software components that must either be included (built into,
bundled) in your projector, or placed in a certain folder where your
projector can find them. When you installed Director, all the Xtras that
came with it were placed in the folder called Xtras, inside the Director
folder. They are used when you author a movie. But when you build and try
to launch a projector, these Xtras (files) are not accessible to it.

This is where you can read about it:

Good luck!
