Re: [linux] Tracking network usage at home
I've used MRTG in the past and it works for tracking per-port usage on a switch I'm just not sure it would work in this instance. Maybe if I can pull SNMP from the Mikrotik - but MRTG was never pretty :-) I wrote some wrappers around it to make it a little more useful but it still is not pretty. Re: [linux] password keepers
A couple of years ago at work we went through an analysis of password managers to use at work, and we ended up with Bitwarden as it was the only one that met all of our requirements. Our process for selecting a product like this is pretty extensive. I can't really say much more than that other than that we've been running it in production for about 18 months now and have been extremely happy with it. We chose the on-prem option. It is pretty easy to manage, pretty easy to do regular updates. Pretty easy to have groups of people who share passwords. That sounds like religious talk - and really should have no place in sound decision making. I already started this thread by stating how much I dislike Oracle, but I'll still consider them if they are the right choice. You are right IBM killed CentOS and that is driving a lot of people away. But why? What did they do? They removed the "Enterprise Grade" from it. But what is that? Well for me there are a couple of major factors in that term: - it should undergo EXTENSIVE QA - so immediately any of the compile-your-own options are gone - it should code-freeze on what was QA'ed and only allow changes into the code in a controlled (and QA'ed) fashion (there goes Fedora, not familiar enough with Debian but guessing they are gone too). This is what RHEL and Ubuntu (LTS) do. It may be great that upstream is adding code every week but if you don't need any of that you are taking a huge risk by allowing it into production. - it should provide important security and stability patches at a priority You are right to look at what is running be default - but that is only by default and most of it can and should be turned off. Anything you don't need or use should be off and ideally not even installed. Every extra package, every extra daemon is a risk. Every change is a risk, so frequent code changes like with Fedora are very risky. Zero downtime datacenter does not mean high uptime on individual VMs. Patching needs to be done at very least monthly but not will-nilly. As mentioned, new features for the sake of new features (that you don't need) are risky. There is even a strong argument not to have high uptime from the point of view of ensuring everything comes up correctly when a reboot does occur. Did someone make a tweak they forgot to make permanent? Yes vendor lock-in can be an issue. But realistically most Linux distros are interchangable with each other. And most Red Hat based distros are interchangable almost seamlessly with little to no work in the supporting orchestration code. High uptime means no patching (unless running a live patch OS like Oracle) No patching is extremely risky. Anyway just my thoughts. Still going to take a very close look at Oracle. My initial email was discussing a replacement for an enterprise-grade Linux and Fedora is definitely not a solution to that problem. For user desktop sure. Rocky Linux was mentioned - I believe it is basically a re-fork of CentOS isn't it, created as a response to this situation by the guy who originally started CentOS. Their logo certainly look similar. I'd never heard of Lenix so googled - and looks like they are now Alma Linux https://almalinux.org/ Looks like they have the same goal - though personally I think they should join forces with Rocky I also looked into Scientific Linux when this news first came out and it looks like those folks threw in the towel a while back. On Mon, Feb 1, 2021 at 12:49 PM Peter Sjöberg wrote: > I'm going with centos8 (or stream or something like that) This may not matter for home use but worth of a discussion in any case. In case anyone missed the smoke-and-mirrors on that one CentOS stream takes the "ent" out of "CentOS" "ent" used to stand for "enterprise grade", but that is no longer the case with stream. The reason it used to be enterprise grade is because it was downstream from RHEL, and RHEL undergoes a great deal of QA performed by RH. Stream is now UPSTREAM from RHEL - which is a bit crazy. This is the other shoe dropping from the RH official collaboration with CentOS a few years ago. Re: [linux] help with find
> I want to check al the file sizes before I delete things > because I am paranoid Never be afraid to do something in 2 or 3 steps even if it can be done in 1. Especially when working in mission critical production systems. In situations like this when I'm programmatically removing a bunch of files I often write a script that does nothing but write another script. Then I review the 2nd script and execute it. The point of the 2nd script is that it removes all the logic and loops and decision points from the first script - it becomes extremely straightforward. And sure that means sometimes it is not trivial to review because it could be thousands of lines long. In your case even though you can do it all with one find command you might consider using a find command to create a list of files (taking into account the possibility of spaces) and then writing a simple BASH script with a loop to read each file from the list, check whether it is zero sized, then remove it. That also gives you essentially "2 sets of eyes" on the files before removing them. The "find" command has already identified them as being zero size, and if you do that again in a BASH script that is a completely different program with a completely different code base making that decision afresh with a 2nd set of eyes. No worries about my phone ending up in the water. I haven't used a solar charger this late in the season so can't really comment on how well it works but I will say you do need full sun and it works extremely well even in early May, which is the earliest I've ever used it. I knew someone was going to warn me against zoom and I included it on purpose :-) Sorry I don't agree with that assessment but I'm not allowed to give you details on why. The vast majority of issues reported are people holding open meetings with no passwords and full remote control turned on. You can't fix stupid people ... Wow night and day difference with the ASUS card. Works out of the box and 85Mbit down / 95Mbit up with antenna in similar location as the other one. I put the tethered antenna up on my desk and get 155Mbit down and 140 up Going to let my teenager try the other one in his windows PC To unsubscribe send a blank message to linux+unsubscr...@linux-ottawa.org To get help send a blank message to linux+h...@linux-ottawa.org To visit the archives: https://lists.linux-ottawa.org

Definitely some issues with the card - I connect to the Bell wifi in the basement and am getting some sketchy performance and 5Mbit down and 13 up Connect to the Bell wifi with my phone and getting 55 down and 105 up Dang. Can't wait til the ASUS card arrives from Staples so I can try it. Re: [linux] Re: Wifi issue with TP-Link TL-WN881ND
You mean my Bell Fibe link speed? I stated that earlier - 1G down and 150Mbit up And this driver is terrible. I'm running a VPN on top of it to get into work and the thing keeps losing connection. Though maybe it is not the driver maybe it is the issue with my Ubiquiti. I'm going to test connected to my Bell Wifi and compare. But right now this is unusable. If it does appear to be the Ubiquiti I'll open a ticket with them. But I've driven that same VPN on multiple devices over the last couple of weeks with no issues. Mac, Dell running Ubuntu. Right now on this desktop I have a WRT-54G running dd-wrt using bridge-mode to my main wifi, and I plug the ethernet jack into the WRT-54G and the VPN has been completely stable all week. Only issue is I only get 12Mbit up and down with that setup. Ug so regarding performance on the desktop I get 10Mbit down and 70 up. I have Bell Fibe 1G / 150Mbit On my phone from the same location gettings 74 down and 131 up. I guess I'm going to still try the ASUS wifi card I ordered from Staples online as it has an external antenna. I'll try adjusting these antennae a bit to see if I get anywhere with that. [linux] Wifi issue with TP-Link TL-WN881ND
Ubuntu 18.04 with latest updates Linux HOSTNAME 5.3.0-45-generic #37~18.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Fri Mar 27 15:58:10 UTC 2020 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux Very strange issue here. Ubuntu recognised the card no issue and everything appeared to be functioning but I just couldn't connect to my wifi. After a fair bit of frustration I decided to try to connect to the Bell WiFi directly on the Home Hub 3000 I have for Fibe - BAM it works fine. Well, other than the fact that that thing is in the basement and I'm on the 2nd floor so I only get about 5Mbit up and down through it. I have the HH3000 in bridge mode and I have an Ubiquiti USG and a couple of Unifi-AC-PRO access points, along with the Unifi controller. This setup has been working great for years now and I've connected a wide range of clients to it without issues. rPis, various IoT devices from multiple vendors like smart switches and so forth, Windows, Linux. Mac you name it. Never a single issue. But dammit if I can figure out why this card won't connect. I've tried various SSIDs that I have enabled including both 2.4/5G mixed SSIDs, and 2.4 and 5G segregated. Here are the log entries from when it works against the HH3000 and below that logs from when it doesn't work against my Ubiquiti setup I've been doing a fair bit of googling and running some nmcli debug commands and have not been able to find anything yet as to what is up here >From within my Ubiquiti GUI logs I cannot find an instance of the MAC address of my TP-Link card. Which seems to indicate a pretty low level issue. Re: [linux] what are people using as opposed to zoom for videoconferencing?
There isn't a whole lot out there for Linux that is Enterprise grade. I've used both Skype and Webex and at both had relatively big issues in Linux. Not sure if they are resolved now that was about 2 years ago. We use Zoom corporately and have been very happy with it - we've raised bugs and they get fixed quickly. They seem serious about keeping the Linux client current which is huge for us. We've asked for a formal statement on these recent findings and unfortunately I can't share anything that comes back but based on our history with them I remain optimistic I do like the looks of that Jitsi / Jitsu on-premise solution though. When this pandemic started I raised this as a potential issue that with everyone going to the Zooms and Skypes of the world en-masse, that their infrastructure may collapse. So far that hasn't happened but wait until all the schools in the world are doing virtual classrooms - which may be starting in a couple of weeks. I'd like to have our own in-house solution on the ready just in case. I may toss that one at a coop student to play with ... I don't think there are any obvious security reasons not to support it of course you never know what goes through the mind of the OpenBSD team. I've never used it but yeah it sure would be useful because including is way easier than editing in place. What we've always done is deploy from svn/git with a templating system like Maven which works really well. Now all that said I was curious and googled, and it looks like this is something new https://superuser.com/questions/247564/is-there-a-way-for-one-ssh-config-file-to-include-another-one I have Ubuntu 18.04 at my fingertips and it does not exist there. Re: [linux] A new subscriber ... in need of help.
First - I'd prefer to keep this on the list so when you reply back please make sure it goes to the list. Which OS do you use more? Linux or Windows? It sounds like you use Linux more in which case that should be the one you install on the "bare metal". i.e install it first. Once you have Linux installed you should install the "virt-manager" package, which should pull in everything else required. Then use virt-manage to install a VM (virtual machine) for Windows - this allows Windows to run inside of (or on top of whichever way you look at it) your Linux install. I would suggest you google from here to find out more. If you do run Windows more than Linux then start with Windows and look at Virtual Box (google) to run a Linux VM on top of Windows. The only thing really wrong with this list as a discussion forum is that it is reply-to-originator not reply-to-list. I know that's what the RFC suggests but it is not the best setting for a discussion forum. Of course if this is only meant to be a means of disseminating information about upcoming events then reply-to-originator would be the best setting, and we'd need a separate list for discussion. Thanks for the offers of PCI NICs - pretty sure I have at least 2 in the box on the shelf just above my computer so I will resort to that if I have to. But my wifi is working so I'm good for now. And here in the new house I don't have the final cables laid yet either so "hard-wired" right now only goes to an old wifi router running DD-WRT in bridge-mode to the house wifi. Once I finally get the cables laid if I don't have my problem solved I'll be reaching for one of those NICs. Pretty sure one of them is even still new in the box! Re: [linux] Re: dealing with bad blocks?
On a related note to my post just now about the new rig - this problem eventually came back a few weeks later but we were in the middle of a move and having a new baby so I did not have time to mess with it - just had to suffer a long time! I ended up buying a used rig from a buddy that was cast-offs for him but a sweet upgrade for me! Finally got around to trying it out - moved my hard drives over to it and it booted right up and the only issue was the network as per my other email just now. Otherwise working great and the hangs have gone away in the short term. I'll report back in this thread in a few days to let you know if they are gone for good. New-to-me system has 8 SATA ports - wh! :-) On Sun, Jan 13, 2019 at 10:13 AM Alan McKay wrote: > > > Well I'm at a loss here- the problem appears to have gone away but I have no > real explanation. [linux] ASUS Z87-Pro Motherboard on-board NIC not working
Hey folks, a bit of a longshot but is anyone using this and can give me the magic incantation to get the NIC working? It has an i217-v chipset and wow there are a lot of issues with that out there on google. Just spent almost 2 hours buried in it. The only real recent solution I can find is changing wake-on-lan and PXE settings so I've been messing around with those in BIOS but still no love, though I am seeing slightly different behavior. With the current settings Linux isn't even seeing the NIC for some reason (though that should not be the case based on my settings) but in previous incantations it was seeing it but the kernel module was not loading with a -2 error. Luckily the on-board wifi is working great but my end goal is to disable that in the BIOS and use hard-wired. I'm on the latest CentOS 7 just yum updated but there seem to be similar problems with every release of Linux since Fedora 9 with that chipset Otherwise loving the new (to me) PC! I think my next step is to pop in a different blank HD and try a fresh install just out of curiosity. -- "You should sit in nature for 20 minutes a day. Re: [linux] wireless router recommendations?
Mikrotik comes highly recommended in my circles as well. Not sure if you still can but you used to be able to download the software and try it on your own hardware or in a VM if you just want to check it out. Re: [linux] Re: dealing with bad blocks?
Well I'm at a loss here- the problem appears to have gone away but I have no real explanation. It could have been a poorly seated drive but I would have expected worse problems with that. I'm back to the configuration I started with and running for the better part of a day with no issues
Re: [linux] Re: dealing with bad blocks?
Well that was disappointing. Booted from a live Ubuntu USB and it took about 8 hours to run badblocks on everything - nothing was found. So next steps will be to try different SATA ports on the MoBo as someone suggested. I also have another similar horsepower computer I just bought from someone that has no HDs so I may try that as well. Odd that this would all start with an OS reinstall though, which makes me suspicious of HW issues on the mobo or elsewhere. I also got this similar error message to the original one posted, but about radeon which suggests the graphics card which suggests afterall a mobo issue of some sort https://imgur.com/gallery/33afTD4
Re: [linux] dealing with bad blocks?
I have done RAID5 with this mobo before - and note this is Linux md RAID not mobo fake raid /boot is XFS on top of its own RAID1 (small partition on both drives) /boot/efi is vfat on top of its own RAID1 (ditto) The rest of the drive is a large partition on each drive with RAID1, then LVM, then my other partitions which are all xfs except for of course swap I will try the other drive to see what happens product: F2A55M-HD2 vendor: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd.
[linux] Re: dealing with bad blocks?
Well looks like I got lucky with which one I took out first - the behavior went away They are Kingston drives and it looks like their drive check tools only run on Windows so I can't use those. Any recommendations for Linux tools to check the drives? I guess I start with the standard SMART tools
[linux] dealing with bad blocks?
Hey folks, I just bought 2 new SSDs and reinstalled the latest CentOS7 on a RAID1 configuration on my desktop, and ever since then have been having annoying problems of the system hanging for 10 seconds to a couple of minutes, and it will do this every 5 or 10 minutes. I had a feeling right from the beginning that I was dealing with bad blocks so I started googling for ways to deal with that. Anyway, I just had it hang again and did CTRL-ALT-F2 to get a console, and from there I saw this for the first time https://imgur.com/gallery/Vv4A69A And I'm not 100% sure what the problem is, though it does clearly seem to be a disk problem. I guess since I am fully RAID1 my next step will be to power down and unplug a disk and boot it up, and wait to see if I have the issue. If so then power down again and try the other drive. >From this can someone confirm the problem? And how to deal with it? I guess since these are brand new disks only in operation 2 or 3 weeks I should be looking at warranty no? Or should I use the badblocks program or something else to deal with it? -- "You should sit in nature for 20 minutes a day. Unless you are busy, then you should sit for an hour" - Zen Proverb
Re: [linux] voip.ms SOAP access
> You could run your own Asterisk server and have > it take care of voicemail, etc. That would be pretty redundant - voip.ms gives you access to a full PBX and all features. It is pretty amazing for the price. You could run a professional call center off it. Re: [linux] voip.ms SOAP access
I have voip.ms and I'm not clear on what features your family needs access to. When you call our house line if nobody answers, you get a prompt asking if you want to go to cell phones or voice mail. If you go to cell phones it lists out the people with cell phones and what number you have to press. Same with voice mail, and when you leave the voice mail it emails it to the appropriate person. Re: [linux] Video Processing

Just the regular software it comes with is good enough for throwing together movies from different clips. I used to use PiTiVi on Linux but I think support for it stopped or something. Shotcut is not bad but it is not good either. Re: [linux] Hardware sources?
Perhaps a slight tangent but Dell sells PCs with Ubuntu pre-installed and supported. We've had good luck with their laptops though we prefer RHEL / CentOS. Though I just noticed their new 5530 laptop does list RHEL 7.5 as supported so I'm going to order a few and try it out.
