No, I mean the Model 40, and it's not a DB-9 port. It's square, with a 3x3 pin matrix. It's probably just the internal connection from the keyboard to the display and line converter. You are correct. Pin 1 is supposed to be a +18V DC source, and pin 9 is frame ground. The other 7 are scanner inputs to the driver circuit on the main board. Unless you have one of the very rare upper/lower-case models, the inputs are multiplexed SIXBIT in a very odd style that makes sense when you consider the mechanical origin in the ASR33, but seems insane otherwise. (I wonder if small 3D plastic printers, non-color, already are? Not that I have a spare two grand right now, but that's about the threshold between utterly beyond the realm of possibility and yeah, I might think about doing that -- it turns out that $100 to $125 is my whim pricing threshold). Those are neat. So, too, are the projects in Digital Machinist. I *hate* being targeted by advertising that actually works, but evidently either Circuit Cellar or Nuts and Volts sold my name to Digital Machinist. They sent me the free issue and I subscribed for a year. The projects there are basically, how to turn a regular milling machine into a CNC mill and I don't know how I'd ever use one for anything other than making parts for small engine repair, but it just seems so COOL to feed the machine a DXF (or equivalent) file and a chunk of bar stock, and get back something complex and metal. You can get into CNC milling for about $6,000, about $2000 if you buy everything used and are pretty handy. If you have z/VM, SLES and TSM for Linux on zSeries you are all set from the software side. Active Server Pages from Apache2 under SLES 9/10 ?
I have a customer currently using our linux under z/VM to host multiple websites. All sites are simple static html, jpg, and pdf files. He is looking into using another office's RedDot system for content management and Department-wide lookfeel standards. The RedDot admins say that in order to implement the lookfeel standards they HAD TO use Active Server Pages (.asp) code. They really want my customer to move completely onto their Win2k servers for the RedDot functions and for the webserving. Is there any way I can still host these RedDot created webpages with the .asp stuff. I understand it from the TSM side, it's the Linux side that I'm not sure about. What does it take(ie hardware, software) to get to a SAN, so that we can use the disk for a storage pool? On the hardware front, you need a FICON adapter with the FCP microcode feature, and whatever jumper cables you need to connect to your SAN switch. You have the software support in your VM and in Linux already. Your SAN admin will need to define a volume for you, and will give you the WWPN information you need to feed CP and Linux to get access to the device. Once that's done, format it, partition it, and mkfs it like normal, mount it in your Linux guest, add it to /etc/fstab, and start defining TSM volumes on it. -- For LINUX-390 subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: INFO LINUX-390 or visit http://www.marist.edu/htbin/wlvindex?LINUX-390

I think that you are right about not having the lpd emulation set up. I found a How-To for setting up the cups-lpd helper server, but I have not gotten it to work. I tried starting it by /usr/lib/cups/daemon/cups-lpd start, and the process would hang and have to be killed. I also tried putting it in inetd by adding printer stream tcp nowait lp /usr/lib/cup/daemon/cups-lpd to /etc/inetd.conf. inetd seemed to restart okay, but I am still unable to do a lpr print and I am not sure if cups-lpd is actually running. Re: Printer help
Hi, Well, I have worked very little with lpr but just recently connected an SLES9 Linux guest to a new Xerox network printer via lpr, this is what I did: 1. Thru YAST/hardware/printers 2. Configure LPD-Style Network Server 3. Enter the hostname remote queue name 4. Enter Name (ex. test) Then from the command line -- lpr -P name-of-printer document-to-be-printed (ex. lpr -P test yourfile.pdf) Hope this helps... I have a network printer that I have installed through the cups web/ gui interface. I am able to print a test page from the gui but I am not able to print from the command line. Looks like you have an older version of the printing utilities installed that is not CUPS-aware. Make sure the cups-lpd package is installed. That will enable support for classic lpr. -- For LINUX-390 subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: INFO LINUX-390 or visit http://www.marist.edu/htbin/wlvindex?LINUX-390
Re: Printer help
DeviceURI socket://10.5.3.123 That's the problem, then. The lpr command is trying to loop back through the CUPS instance to get support for direct socket printing, and you don't have cups-lpd installed. Install cups-lpd, which should fix it. -- For LINUX-390 subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: INFO LINUX-390 or visit http://www.marist.edu/htbin/wlvindex?LINUX-390
Re: Printer help
I tried starting it by /usr/lib/cups/daemon/cups-lpd start, and the process would hang and have to be killed. Cups-lpd needs to be started by inetd on demand. You need to add entries to both /etc/services and inetd.conf (or make an entry in xinetd.d/ if you use xinetd). The cups-lpd package for your distribution should have made the appropriate modifications to /etc/services and the inetd configuration. -- For LINUX-390 subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: INFO LINUX-390 or visit http://www.marist.edu/htbin/wlvindex?LINUX-390

Question about using z/VM DCSS for sharing code under Linux
I was wondering how many people are using DCSS to share code under Linux? At this time we are looking at about 12 to 15 Linux guest divided across two lpars. It is my understanding the Linux guest will be running WebSphere and Oracle. I have found some information on setting up the environment.
