IPL problem with SLES10/ zVM 4.4

2007-11-19 Thread David Booher
Looks like my problems are solved. I applied UM31426 and UM31470 to my sandbox
and lo and behold:

"Start Installation or System"
You may need to load some drivers (modules) to support your hardware.
Main Menu
1) Settings
2) System Information
3) Kernel Modules (Hardware Drivers)
4) Start Installation or System
5) Verify Installation CD-ROM/DVD
6) Eject CD
7) Exit or Reboot
8) Power off

I am much farther than before :) Thanks to everyone for their suggestions!

Re: Local YOU server failing for some patches

2007-11-19 Thread Peter E. Abresch Jr. - at Pepco
Thanks for your response

I reran the YOU sync from YaST2 again and it fails with

?Error

Synchronization failed for:
SUSE CORE 9 https://you.novell.com/update
Check whether the requested server is up. If yes,
Make sure that the user name and the password
are set correctly (see ?Edit? dialog).?

looking in /var/lib/YaST2/you I see no indication of any userid/password
problem however I get to patch-11816 and cannot get any further. Here are
the last few lines in the youlog:

2007-11-19 14:15:07 (11949): Retrieving patch-11802: "Security update for
KDE libraries"

The filespace seems ok:

I see no indication of any problems other then that last error in the
youlog. What could be causing this?

The particular RPM you reference is on you.novell.com. So, whatever
you're using to mirror the YOU server, re-run it, and see if more files
show up.

Umm, by any chance was it one of these?
CP Q TERM
LINEND # , LINEDEL cent-sign , CHARDEL OFF, ESCAPE " , TABCHAR ]

Those will work fine on an LPAR install, but not z/VM unless you modify
them to something else. In which case you can't use _those_ characters
in a password. (Unless you escape them with the current z/VM escape
character.)

Local YOU server failing for some patches

2007-11-19 Thread Peter E. Abresch Jr. - at Pepco
Local YOU server failing for some patches:

I am trying to put some patches on my SLES9x SP3 server. When I pull the
patches from my local YOU Server using YaST2 Online Update, I get the
following:

"ERROR(Media:file not found)[HTTP returncode: 404 (URL:
http://linuxyou/YOU/s390x/update/SUSE-CORE/9/rpm/s390x/yast2-online-update-2.9.22-0.2.3.s390x.rpm
)
Package:yast2-online-update-2.9.22-0.2.3 Patch: patch-11966"

I get this same error for the following patches:

patch-11961
patch-11918
patch-11931
patch-11932
patch-11952
patch-11955
patch-11964
patch-11965
patch-11990
patch-11945

the other patches seem to be ok and applied just fine.

I checked the directory and indeed that rpm is not there, however, I do
see patch-11966 in directory
/var/lib/YaST2/you/mnt/s390x/update/SUSE-CORE/9/patches/patch-11966

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Peter

Wasn't there an fcp update at some point that was necessary, even if you
weren't using fcp for your guest? I seem to recall, long ago, running into
this. Might not have been fcp, but it was definitely something we weren't
using, but not having the fix bolloxed up things fairly completely.

Might this be something similar? New code in SLES 10 that takes advantage of a
PTF not currently on z/VM at the levels being discussed?

I've seen this symptom before (on z/VM 5.1 though): the problem was that the
Linux kernel issues a DIAG308 call with invalid parameters during
initialization. Somehow this confuses z/VM so that the ram disk would be
corrupted in memory and an attempt to unpack it would fail randomly.

The solution was to install a VM PTF (as documented in the SLES10 SP1 release
notes):

APAR VM63742:

* z/VM 4.4: UM31426
* z/VM 5.1: UM31428

Hi Mark,

Installed the new zipl.conf file you sampled to me and ran the zipl -V
command and it works great!

At the VM console we now have a way to stop the full boot if needed in'
Our SLES 9.3 systems ...

Here is (for all) a zipl.conf before and after ..

Thanks again Mark top notch info as always !

And here's the updated version. Rename your current one. Copy this
