Re: SLES10 LPAR clone - OSA interface not found

2011-02-10 Thread Helmut Grauer
Hi Doug,
I think the configuration files looks good
I would check first command dmesg to see all messages which are
available from the operating system
Then I would check if the devices could be sensed from the system with
lscss |grep -i 3200 and lscss |grep -i 3201
If this is Ok i would check if devices was grouped
ls -la /sys/bus/ccwgroup/drivers/lcs/
Then you know a little bit more what's going on.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen / Kind regards

Sent by:Linux on 390 Port LINUX-390@vm.marist.edu

Unfortunately, we do not have z/VM and I am stuck with LPAR
installations. I am trying to develop a process for cloning from one
LPAR and installing the clone in another LPAR.

Everything works according to plan except the OSA network card is not
found. This is where I need help.

General steps:

*DFSS backup
*DFSS restore to different volumes
*Mount boot volume to /mnt on existing LPAR
*Update config files in /mnt/etc
*chroot /mnt
*mkinitrd
*zipl
*exit chroot
*umount /mnt and deactivate volume
*Update HMC with new boot volume in new LPAR and
Activate(start)

During boot, I get the following messages.

Is there a configuration file that I have left out? A command that I

one final observation on my piping to multiple processes.

2011-02-10 Thread McKown, John
The use of (...) and tee seem to be what I need to pipe the output from bzcat
to muliple perl scripts. But I found a bug in my original:

bzcat data*bz2| tee (perl script1.pl) | perl script2.pl

The stdout from script1.pl is piped into script2.pl ater the bzcat'ed data. So
I need to do something like:

bzcat data*bz2 | tee (perl script1.pl /dev/fd/2)|perl script2.pl

that way the output from script1.pl is send to stderr instead of stdout, and
does not end up going into script2.pl.

Again, many thanks for this neat way to reduce my run-time.

A better model might be
$ a | tee (b) (c) (d)  /dev/null

i.e. explicitly throw away tee's stdout. This doesn't upset b/c/d's
stdout as bash's process substitution occurs before the file
redirection. However don't depend too much on the order (or worse,
buffering) of the process-substitution stages' output.

Confusingly, pipelines are constructed in a different order, so this
behaves differently:
$ a | tee (b) (c) | d

by sending a, b and c's stdout to d's stdin.

One final note; the pee utility included in the moreutils package does
exactly what you want without the funky shell syntax.

Cheers,
Phil

vswitch routing

2011-02-10 Thread Jose Correa Saldeño

Hello,

For backup over the same network without affecting real time traffic, Is it
possible to establish routes to the media server over particular OSAs on the
same VLAN and VSwitch. We currently have two OSAs from the same VSwitch to two
different Cisco switches with the same VLANs.

For this particular Linux Guest who's real time traffic is being affected by
the concurrent backups, we have it participate in a single VLAN as access mode.

 mode.

I believe that to do what you want, you're going to have to define two
different VSWITCHes using different device numbers, and have the guest do its
backups over the second virtual NIC.

OK, so exactly what version of SLES10 are you running? Based on the messages,
it doesn't look like the device numbers are being grouped (as first suggested
by Helmut). There was a bug in SLES10 that caused such a symptom, but it was
fixed in a kernel and udev update.

No, you cannot choose which OSA to use; the VSWITCH is not a router. If
the OSA port utilization is too high, then you need to look at link
aggregation port groups (aka channel bonding or virtual channels).

There may be smart functions in the physical switch that will cause it to
move certain traffic to certain ports via the link agg. protocols. I
don't know. And, if so, I don't know if VM will cooperate in keeping them
there or if it will try to re-balance the traffic based on load. (You can
define the VSWITCH with LACP turned off.)

Perhaps the simplest solution (FVVO simple) is to create a 2nd VSWITCH
with it's own OSAs that plug into the same VLAN. The guest would have two
virtual NICs and two IP addresses on the same LAN segment. Their routing
tables can be adjusted to have the media server IPs routed over eth1 (say)
and everything else over eth0. The switch will ensure that packets headed
for the IP addr associated with eth1 will be routed to the other VSWITCH
OSAs.

Hint: Draw what you want to have happen on a piece of paper and take it to
your network architects. They can solve this for you, though you may need
more hardware to implement their solution.
