Re: Need assistance with a SAN install
Mark, Thank you for the excellent instructions. My root volume was a SAN disk. I booted from the SAN disk and the boot halted in the initrd portion of the process. I was able to search the /dev/disk/by-id directory and found dm-0, dm-1, and dm-2. I have very limited experience with SAN disks and remembered that the multipathing set up symbolic links to dm-*. I create a /mnt directory and tried to mount dm-1 (it was the swap partition) then realized that dm-2 was my root partition. I was then able to use your instructions to find and modify zipl.conf. Once my system booted, I listed out /dev/mapper and found what dm-0 was symbolically linked to (I hope that I'm using the correct terminology - I'm a converted z/OS SysProg). I then edited /etc/zipl.conf to change 'noresume ' to 'resume=' and replace all of the old info related to the dm-* links and replaced them with what was in /dev/mapper, reran zipl, and rebooted. I have documented the process for when I need to use it in the future. Many thanks for the assistance! The system that is booted from the SLES 11 dvd also has /proc, /sys, and /dev but the /etc directory as doesn't contain zipl.conf. OK, the first one sounds like the initrd environment, before the real root file system gets mounted. If your root file system is on a SCSI disk and not ECKD, that makes things more complicated, but still doable. It does require being semi-comfortable with navigating the /sys file system and echoing values into various things. If your root file system is on DASD, then things are a lot easier. 1. Use dasd_configure to bring your root file system online, and any other DASD devices you have. (Everything after this (except the device name, would be the same for a root file system on SCSI disk.) 2. Mount your root file system on /mnt: mount /dev/dasd?# /mnt 3. Bind-mount /proc, /dev/, and /sys on /mnt: for fs in dev proc sys; do mount --bind /$fs /mnt/$fs; done 4a. chroot /mnt 4b. If you have /usr on a separate file system, then mount /usr. 5. Edit /etc/zipl.conf. You'll most likely want to use ed or sed. First, test to make sure: cd /etc/ sed -e 's/resume=/noresume //' zipl.conf Make sure things look right. You'll see a dangling /dev/disk/by-*whatever but that's OK for now. sed -i.backup -e 's/resume=/noresume //' zipl.conf 6. Re-run zipl: zipl 7. Unmount /usr: umount /usr 8. Exit the chroot: exit 9. Unmount the various bind mounts: for fs in dev proc sys; do umount /mnt/$fs; done 10. Unmount your root file system: umount /mnt 11. Try rebooting.
