mvs vm routing across osa
hello all, we are trying to get a vm lpar to communicate with an mvs lpar by routing the traffic across an OSA (we aren't at a high enough level of z/OS to use hipersockets). The vm to mvs communication is working just fine, but the linux guests cannot communicate with mvs. output from netstat -r and traceroute from a linux guest : systest:~ # traceroute 10.66.23.8 traceroute to 10.66.23.8 (10.66.23.8), 30 hops max, 40 byte packets 1 10.66.21.8 (10.66.21.8) 2 ms 0 ms 0 ms 2 * * systest:~ # netstat -r Kernel IP routing table Destination Gateway Genmask Flags MSS Window irtt Iface 10.66.126.0 * 255.255.255.0 U40 0 0 eth1 default 10.66.126.1 0.0.0.0 UG 40 0 0 eth1 systest:~ # relevant parts of profile tcpip 00126 LINK OSAE00 QDIOETHERNET DEV0E00 00127 00128 DEVICE VIPA1 VIRTUAL 0 00129 LINK VIPA1 VIRTUAL 0 VIPA1 00130 00131 DEVICE VLAN1 OSD FE00 PORTNAME PRODVLAN PRIROUTER 00132 LINK VLAN1 QDIOETHERNET VLAN1 00133 00134 DEVICE VLAN2 OSD FF00 PORTNAME TESTVLAN PRIROUTER 00135 LINK VLAN2 QDIOETHERNET VLAN2 00136 00137 00138 ; (End DEVICE and LINK statements) 00139 ; -- 00140 HOME 00141 10.66.21.8 VIPA1 00142 10.6.1.21 OSAE00 00143 10.66.127.1 VLAN1 00144 10.66.126.1 VLAN2 00145 ; (End HOME Address information) 00146 ; -- 00147 GATEWAY 00148 ; Network First LinkMTU Subnet Subnet 00149 ; Address HopNameSize Mask Value 00150 ; - - -- --- - 00151 10.6.1.1= OSAE00 1500 HOST 00152 10 = OSAE00 1500 0.255.255.255 0.66.4.23 00153 10 = OSAE00 1500 0.255.255.0 0.66.23 00154 10 = VLAN1 1500 0.255.255.0 0.66.127 00155 10 = VLAN2 1500 0.255.255.0 0.66.126 00156 DEFAULTNET 10.6.1.1 OSAE00 1500 0 00157 ; (End GATEWAY Static Routing information) 00158 ; --
Re: SuSE support $?
i think they quoted us ~$12k for the first engine and a little less for subsequent engines, but i wasn't involved in the payout, so i can't tell you what we payed. call SuSE, they'll give you a quote. is there any word on when this may be available for the linux/390 environment. really looking forward to backing up our databases this way.

Re: Oracle 9i
We just moved our first production database from HP-UX to linux/390 last monday. So far we haven't found ANY showstopper issues. Mostly it has been just a few environmental gotchas. Our big database has a scheduled move date for the middle of march. It's about 70gig and has around 600-700 users on it daily. In fact, Oracle9i documentation specific to Linux/390 is only the release notes, everything else is common. Performance depends on disk and processor sizes and speeds regardless of platform, but we have not noticed any issues on our MP3000 boxes. You may need a bigger box for large production workloads (we are a development shop). Re: Oracle 9i
Striping in LVM makes a fantastically huge difference. The database import time was reduced by 50% when striped across 10 3390-9 vs non-striped. We have 2 z/900 engines dedicated to our VM lpar. the best performance i've seen for oracle is defining 4 virtual cpu's but your mileage may vary on that. the dba's had a problem running a shutdown script brought over from HPUX, but adding a #!/bin/sh to it solved that problem. I haven't been following this list much lately so I don't know what else has been discussed, but those were some of the things we've encountered. Any links for tuning vm and linux for specific workloads?
ipl'ing new kernel
i'm running the 2.4.7-suse kernel on a z900 under vm4.3. i downloaded the 2.4.17 + the two may-2002 diff's from ibm. however when ipl the 2.4.17 kernel, it always stops with a filesystem error, drops into single user and asks me to fsck . However, i know the filesystem isn't corrupted. if i reboot with the 2.4.7, it comes up fine. I've tried finding some references to this, but can't seem to come up with a thing. if anybody has a solution or a link to a solution it would be greatly appreciated. thanks chris
Re: General Linux Question
There is an NTFS module available. If I'm not mistaken, read works pretty well, and if you want to trash your fs, you can use write. It's been in the works for quite awhile, but it is apparently very difficult on the write side of things. Yes, you have to compile the module, and there should be docs for it in your linux source directory. chris (this was also written by a five y/o child!) : From: Rengasamy, Samy [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: 2002/04/15 Mon PM 06:15:25 EDT To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: General Linux Question How to access NTFS from Linux?
