mvs vm routing across osa

2003-03-09 Thread Chris Little
hello all,

we are trying to get a vm lpar to communicate with an mvs lpar by
routing the traffic across an OSA (we aren't at a high enough level of
z/OS to use hipersockets). The vm to mvs communication is working just
fine, but the linux guests cannot communicate with mvs.

Re: SuSE support $?

2003-03-07 Thread Chris Little
i think they quoted us ~$12k for the first engine and a little less for subsequent
engines, but i wasn't involved in the payout, so i can't tell you what we payed. call
SuSE, they'll give you a quote.

Anyone know the going rate for SuSE support on s390 these days, or does
it vary (i.e. contact SuSE?). Does the # of images matter? # of IFL's?

 Thanks,

sles7 install issue with qdio

2003-02-27 Thread Chris Little
Hello, list,

when installing sles7 31-bit, i get the following error

qeth: received an IDX TERMINATE on irq 0x0/0x1 with cause code 0x22 --
 try another portname

here is some various things that i have gone through. i have successfully
installed this before, so i'm not quite sure what the issue is. i've included
a lot of configuration/log files that i've gone through and can seem to find
any problems.

is there something that i'm missing? it's been awhile since i've done an install.

Re: Oracle 9i

2003-01-03 Thread Chris Little
We just moved our first production database from HP-UX to linux/390 last monday. So
far we haven't found ANY showstopper issues. Mostly it has been just a few
environmental gotchas. Our big database has a scheduled move date for the middle of
march. It's about 70gig and has around 600-700 users on it daily.

Our developers and database people find Oracle9i on Linux/390 to be
 identical to Oracle9i
on any other Unix or Linux box. In fact, Oracle9i documentation
 specific to Linux/390 is
only the release notes, everything else is common.

Performance depends on disk and processor sizes and speeds regardless of
 platform,
but we have not noticed any issues on our MP3000 boxes. You may need a
 bigger box
for large production workloads (we are a development shop).

 Hope this helps,
 Jim

Re: Oracle 9i

Striping in LVM makes a fantastically huge difference. The database import time was
reduced by 50% when striped across 10 3390-9 vs non-striped. We have 2 z/900 engines
dedicated to our VM lpar. the best performance i've seen for oracle is defining 4
virtual cpu's but your mileage may vary on that. the dba's had a problem running a
shutdown script brought over from HPUX, but adding a #!/bin/sh to it solved that
problem. I haven't been following this list much lately so I don't know what else has
been discussed, but those were some of the things we've encountered.

 Chris,

It would be nice if you would talk about just what those environmental
problems had been. More than likely someone else will be in the same
 situation.

ipl'ing new kernel

2002-08-16 Thread Chris Little

i'm running the 2.4.7-suse kernel on a z900 under vm4.3. i downloaded the 2.4.17 +
the two may-2002 diff's from ibm. however when ipl the 2.4.17 kernel, it always stops
with a filesystem error, drops into single user and asks me to fsck . However, i know
the filesystem isn't corrupted. if i reboot with the 2.4.7, it comes up fine. I've
tried finding some references to this, but can't seem to come up with a thing. if
anybody has a solution or a link to a solution it would be greatly appreciated.

Re: General Linux Question

2002-04-15 Thread Chris Little

There is an NTFS module available. If I'm not mistaken, read works pretty well, and
if you want to trash your fs, you can use write. It's been in the works for quite
awhile, but it is apparently very difficult on the write side of things.

Yes, you have to compile the module, and there should be docs for it in your linux
source directory.
