Re: red-hat open shift on zlinux

2022-10-03 Thread Mike Friesenegger

Here is another option if you are interested.

SUSE Rancher can be deployed on any enterprise Linux on Z including on
RHEL.  There are four YouTube videos which show how to deploy the following:

 * RKE2, a Kubernetes distributions option from SUSE that can run on
   any enterprise Linux on Z
 * SUSE Rancher Manager, manages any Kubernetes distribution from a
   simple to use web UI
 * A simple containerized application

The longest of the four videos are just over 5 minutes.  The first video
shows the vCPU, memory and storage requirements for a  z/VM guest that
makes up a part of the three node RKE2 kubernetes cluster.  The minimal
guest requirement is 2 vCPUs, 8GB memory and 50GB disk.

disks to new volumes and IPLing off of the new volumes. No luck, the virtio
modules aren't available in the guest so it can't see any DASD.

Has someone put together a recipe for moving a guest from z/VM to KVM? Or am I
heading down a dead end?

I'm not aware of one, but I wouldn't call it a dead end, either. As a
first step, I would rebuild the initrd with whatever parameters are
needed to include the virtio drivers, then try again. I have to think
that /etc/fstab entries would need to be looked at as well.

Look at the virtualization cookbook 5 from the redbooks.
http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/sg248463.html?Open

chapter 8.7 contains information how to configure a system as such that it can
be moved forth and back between LPAR and KVM. That should then also be possible
with z/VM. If done right that should allow you to move the guest forth and back
between KVM and z/VM.

Basic idea:
make sure the initrd has classic (DASD) drivers and the virtio-blk driver and
then use driver independent names for the partitions.

CC Viktor, do we still have our presentation flying around somewhere?

I co-authored Chapter 8 and did much of the testing.  I agree with
Christian that z/VM -> KVM is possible.

Chapter 8 starts with a SLES KVM VM running on a SLES KVM host running
in an LPAR.  The SLES OS is installed on FCP SCSI disks. The KVM VM and
host are shutdown and the SLES OS on the SCSI disk is IPL'd in the same
LPAR.  Using DDR to duplicate the z/VM guest to the new DASDs on your
KVM host is a good first step.  The good thing about this approach is
that you can continue to run the z/VM guest as you work through the
hurdles to get the KVM host to boot.

I suggest keeping the device ids of the OS disks defined in the KVM
guest the same as it is in z/VM.  I encourage you to review the
virt-install command in the shell script in Appendix B as an example how
to define the KVM VM.

I would define the NIC with the same device id but add that to a NAT'd
KVM network.  This will allow the network of the new KVM VM to start but
will not step all over the IP address being used while the z/VM guest is
running at the same time.

I also agree with Mark that it might be necessary to rebuild the initrd
so that virtio drivers are available during IPL.

Mike

Re: unstable LVM on SLES 12

2020-04-14 Thread Mike Friesenegger

Hello Csaba,

My experience leads me to believe that a step or steps in the upgrade
process are the root cause of the issues that you are seeing.

You mention making a backup of the OS DASD but it is unclear to me if
you tried to perform a test upgrade on this backup DASD.  The LVM
entries still exist on the backup and LVM errors would happen if the
LVMs were not enabled and used on the backup DASD.  This is one example
of where a step might be a cause of the issues you are seeing.

One idea is to use vgexport so that the volume groups and its disks are
unable to used during the upgrade process.  This is an idea that you
should test on a test 11 SP4 system before attempting on the production
system.  Here are the high level steps that I would do to test this
idea.  First make sure that the fstab entries are commented out so the
LVs are not mounted.  Then use vgexport to put the VGs in an offline
state.  NOTE:  It is always a good idea to have a backup of the data on
the VGs before performing vg operations like vgexport.  Once the VGs are
successfully exported, reboot SLES 11 SP4 to make sure that no FS and
mounting errors exist.  Finally, confirm the VGs and LVs are not used by
the system.   Once this is done then I would try an offline upgrade from
11 SP4 to 12 SP4.  BTW - SLES 12 SP5 is released and I strongly
encourage upgrading  11 SP4 to this version.

Have you on the customer's behalf or the customer opened a support
request to get ideas and recommendations regarding the issues you are
seeing?

Mike

openSUSE Factory now builds for the IBM z Systems architecture

2016-04-05 Thread Mike Friesenegger

Hello,

This project is targeted to improve the integration of z Systems
technology into the openSUSE distribution. This is done by several
means:
- it allows the openSUSE community to actively work on a distribution
targeted for z Systems like LinuxOne Emperor and LinuxOne Rockhopper.
- build issues can be found much earlier than during SUSE Linux
Enterprise release cycles.
- new features can be integrated without having to wait for service
packs.
- allow customers to participate in the base development for future
SUSE Linux Enterprise products.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb309428.aspx and search for the

For Linux, SCOM only supports x86 and x86_64 although there is support for
other architectures.

Re: sles 11 sp2 ?

2012-01-11 Thread Mike Friesenegger
Hello Marcy,

What you are seeing is the internal work in preparation for the release of
SLE11 SP2. Not all of the SLE11 SP2 channels that you see are mirrorable with
SMT yet. The release is scheduled for later in calendar Q1 2012.

Here are the big highlights for the new things in SLES11 SP2 that are across
architecture. Contact me offlist if you want specifics for s390x.

* Hardware enablement / incl. RAS features across all architectures

* Solaris Compete
** Filesystem: btrfs * “Copy on Write”, data checksums, snapshotting
** LXC delivers Container support based on Control Groups
** Enhance Tracing capabilities, via LTTng (Linux Trace Toolkit)

* Snapshot / Rollback for package updates
** YaST2 + ZYpp + btrfs

* New Maintenance Model
** more flexibility for customers while retaining full control

* SLE HA: Geo-Cluster, automated and pre-configuration
** Supported on all architectures
** Included as part of the of the SLES for System z, ppc and ia64 subscription

Re: OCFS2 replacement for SLES ?

2011-11-03 Thread Mike Friesenegger
Hello all,

SUSE has been contributing to OCFS2 since 2005 with significant contributions
to the project. OCFS2 is part of the SUSE Linux Enterprise High Availability
Extension which is free for all paid SLES for System z subscriptions. SUSE
supports OCFS2 on all architectures that SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (x86,
x86_64, ia64, ppc64 and s390x) runs on. SUSE will continue to develop and
enhance OCFS2 for all of the architectures including System z. While Oracle
has chosen to limit customer choice, there is another vendor supporting OCFS2
on IBM System z: SUSE.

Hello Saulo,

There is an eDirectory product team which is separate from any SUSE related
strategy. This topic has been brought up to eDirectory product management but
the customer demand has not enough been enough in the past.

If there are customers on the list looking for a very scalable LDAP directory
on Linux on System z then ping me off list so I can put together a list to pass
along to eDirectory product management.

My knowledge is a bit rusty on this but let me clarify a few things.

eDirectory is a standalone product althought it is included in many Novell
products like OES. eDirectory can run on a number of OSes like Linux, Solaris,
AIX and Windows and is an LDAP based directory. eDirectory only runs on Linux
on x86/x86_64 based systems.

One option is that you could keep the Netware around and connect Samba via
LDAP. eDirectory on Netware 5 is old and that might cause problems.

A better option would be to get eDirectory installed on Linux, join the
directory tree on the Netware server so it can become a replica, and then
promote the directory on the Linux box so the Netware server could be turned
off. Not that I want to see a Netware box get turned off but maybe the
organization is more comfortable with Linux.

A couple of ideas for you to contemplate

Not exactly but it is relatively easy to figure out.

Type "suse linux enterprise server" and then expand SLES10 to see the FCS
(First Customer Ship) date for SLES10 SP4 which is April 12, 2011.

October 11, 2011 is the last day for SLES10 SP3 patches based on my two-handed

You are right if this was a Microsoft-only world. The Mono project is the open
source implementation of the open standard .NET framework which can run on
non-Windows OSes like Linux. This means that ASP.NET web applications can be
run on SLES on System z using Mono. Mono has implemented a mod_mono Apache
module which enables Apache to serve up ASPX and DLL based web content. Novell
provides a supported subscription called the SUSE Linux Enterprise Mono
Extension where customers can deploy ASP.NET apps on SLES on System z (and
Intel).

ASP is different that ASP.NET. Mono supports ASP.NET not ASP which is probably

There is a little known utility on SUSE, ssh-copy-id, which copies the public

# blkid /dev/dasda2 to determine filesystem type on /dev/dasda2

Output:
/dev/dasda2: UUID="af6dceee-af00-4107-b292-c34cb4627126" TYPE="ext3"

Another exmaple:
# blkid /dev/sda3
/dev/sda3: UUID="xhRIYc-bmQy-RQi8-V6Lp-bNFl-YGE3-xEEdFp" TYPE="LVM2_member"

Then, I would mount the ext3 or use lvm commands to determine what VG and LV
the disk is a member of to mount the LV.

Re: Add repository SLES11 SP1

2010-08-05 Thread Mike Friesenegger
There is an option in the Software Repository to refresh the content of
individual or all installation repos. The auto refresh option maybe was turned
off for that repo which means it would not refresh when you changes the mounted
ISO.

I suggest forcing a refresh either in YAST or using zypper. I do this whenever
I switch ISOs that are mounted to the same mountpoint.

Re: Add repository SLES11 SP1

2010-08-05 Thread Mike Friesenegger
Berry,

I would look in the directory that contains the SDK. Check to see if the
/suse/noarch has the tomcat rpm in it.

The other option is to remove the DVD2 directory, create a new SDK directory
for the SDK and extract the SDK iso into the newly created SDK directory if you
would prefer to start from zero.

Re: Add repository SLES11 SP1

2010-08-05 Thread Mike Friesenegger
Hello,

tomcat6-6.0.18-20.3.1.noarch.rpm is located in the noarch directory on the
SLE11SP1 s390x DVD1. I added DVD1 to my guest and was able to see the tomcat
package. I used the zypper command (zypper se tomcat) to search for the
package. YAST Software Management should show you the same thing.

Manually mount DVD1 and look for the tomcat rpm in /suse/noarch. Have you
verified the MD5SUM of the SDK DVD1?

Re: SMT client can't suse_register

2010-07-13 Thread Mike Friesenegger
Hello Marcy,

Has registration worked in the past with this SMT server from another server?
Can you try a registration from another server?

It looks like you are getting a certificate from the SMT server. Where is
squid running?

I would also look at the /root/.suse_register.log to see if there is any
additional messages that may provide a hint.

Look at the /etc/suseRegister.conf to confirm that the server that you would
like to register is pointing to the correct SMT server. If the
suseRegister.conf is pointed correctly then you will be able to rerun
suse_register without having to use clientSetup4SMT.sh.

Regards,

Mike

Re: SLES11install doc for z/Series

2010-06-29 Thread Mike Friesenegger
Peter,

http://www.novell.com/documentation/sles11/book_sle_deployment/data/cha_zseries.html
is the System z specific information in the SLES11 documentation. The
install for SLES11 SP1 nearly identical to SLES10. Punch the IMAGE, PARMFILE
and INITRD. IPL the reader to start the installer and then point the
installation to a NFS, FTP or HTTP install source.

I hope this helps.

There is a --type option for addrepo which supports multiple install repos.
zypper will try to determine the repo type automatically. You could specify
yast2 for the install repo format that is on the SLES11 install media.

The easiest way to do add a SLES11 install repo is to use YAST | Software |
Software Repositories | Add but it sounds like you want do this via command
line.

Two problems that I see. 1) Yum is not part of the SLES11 install media. 2)
You would have to build a yum repo of the SLES11 install media.

Billy,

Nothing to be concerned with.

That option generates an autoinst.xml file in /root if you wanted to use
autoyast to reinstall the system from install media without answering the

Re: Run a script at boot time

2010-02-22 Thread Mike Friesenegger
Yes, you will need to provide the path to java.

I am not a java expert but you may also need to specify the classpath for java
to find com.ibm.keymanager.EKMLaunch. I typically need a couple attempts to
get this right.

I think you are on the right path (pun intended!)

Or - create /etc/init.d/after.local which calls the script. /etc/init.d/rc
checks for after.local and will execute it if exists. after.local is executed

Re: SUSER Linux Enterprise Mono - Any Experience?

2010-01-28 Thread Mike Friesenegger
The Mono Migration Analyzer (MoMA) is a utility that has been created to
analyze .NET code and point out specific functions and calls that are not
supported by Mono - http://www.mono-project.com/Moma . You run MoMA on a
Windows machine and point it at the ASP.NET assemblies directory. MoMA will
inspect the .exe and .dll files and generate a report which the developers can
review.

Mono is up to 2.6 in the community and Moma contains the definitions for 2.6.
You will want to download the 2.4 definitions file because the Mono Extension
is currently based on the 2.4 version of Mono.

Please reach out to me off list if you have additional questions.

Re: SLES 11 software updates

2010-01-14 Thread Mike Friesenegger
Hello Frank,

To add an update repository you must register SLES. YAST provides an interface
for taking care of the registration or you can use the CLI. In YAST, got to
Support | Novell Customer Center Configuration. My preference is to use the
suse_register command. suse_register -h to see an example. In both cases, you
will need a registration code.

With the regcode, you will be able to get the updates as a 180-day eval or when
you purchase the SLES subscription. The regcode is either mailed to you or
available via the Novell Customer Center - http://www.novell.com/center .

Regards,

Mike

Re: SLES 11 YaST Control Center, select System > LVM

2009-08-28 Thread Mike Friesenegger
Hello Steve,

I found this statement in section 4.6. This is incorrect in the SLES11 Storage
Administration Guide. It should say something like "In the YaST Control
Center, select System > Partitioner."

I will follow-up with the documentation team to fix this.

HTH,

Mike Friesenegger

Lionel,

Here is the documentation on using wget to pass your Novell account credentials
and download the ISOs that you need without using a GUI.

Re: Odd build request

2009-05-14 Thread Mike Friesenegger
Lee,

/boot will need to be its own partition. The size of the partition for /boot
can be fairly small but I would make it 250MB to 500MB. The remaining
unpartitioned space on the mod 27s can be put into an LVM VG and carved up
however they want.

I have been typing "#cp vi vmsg 1 1" but I also tried "#cp vi vmsg 0 1" just
now. Here is what I get:

I am not sure why you would be seeing something different. z/VM version?

Re: Problem with EVMS on SLES 10 SP2+ at boot

2009-03-27 Thread Mike Friesenegger
Hello Kevin,

I recommend that you stop using EVMS and start using LVM2. The direction with
SLE11 and going forward is to use LVM2 as the logical volume manager and cLVM2
as the clustered filesystem aware volume manager. You will not need to
reinstall SLES10, LVM will be able to see the LVM LVs which are just contained
within EVMS.

Hello Brian,

Did you do a default package install or did you select specific packages? This
error is not usually seen with a default install of SLES10.

I am happy to help. It might be easier if you would like to take this offline.

Re: Where to download RHEL & SLES images for s390

2008-05-22 Thread Mike Friesenegger
Hello,

You can go to http://www.novell.com/products/server/eval.html and select the
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP2 for IBM System z link to download the
installation media. You will be prompted to create a Novell account after
selecting this link.

I suggest using the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server Starter System for System z,
http://www.novell.com/partners/ibm/mainframe/starterpack.html , if your testing
will be done using z/VM. The starter system is a prebuilt installation server
image that can be restored into your z/VM system using CMS tools. This means
you will not need to create a separate installation server on a Linux or UNIX
system.

Hope this helps,

Mike Friesenegger

Re: Oracle 10g on SuSE 10

Section 5.2 of the Oracle 10gR2 Release Notes (
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/relnotes.102/b25399/toc.htm ) has
the answer which is very hard to find...

5.2 Oracle Universal Installer Operating System Prerequisite Checks

If you are installing Oracle Database 10g on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10,
then the current version of Oracle Universal Installer does not recognized
these operating systems as supported operating systems and does not perform the
installation.\\

There are 2 workarounds listed.

Re: Performance tools for Oracle on Linux

2007-11-26 Thread Mike Friesenegger
I have had other customers use the Oracle Statspack tool for performance
monitoring on SLES for non ZSeries platforms. Statspack is included with the
Oracle DB so I assume it is available for ZSeries. If you have access to
Oracle Metalink then do a search on "statspack" for more details.

Re: ZEN and zLinux

2007-07-02 Thread Mike Friesenegger
The first several iterations of the zmd agent were resource hogs. Novell
engineering has done work on this to make this better in ZLM7.2 although I have
not tested this on z.

There is no interaction between ZLM and z/VM. An agent is installed on each
SLES instance which then will look to the ZLM server for package management.
One suggestion, do not lessen the agents refresh time because this will lead to
more cycles being used.

ZENwork Linux Management 7.2 is the latest version for Linux management.
ZLM7.2 does support SLES10 on zSeries for package management. The ZLM
server will have to be a Intel based server.
