Re: Another article on LINUX & MF hardware

2002-08-29 Thread Philip J. Tully

Craig,
It should cost $0.00 to convert the engine to an IFL, it is a microcode
change. You should then see a cost reduction in your os/390 costs. The
cost of z/VM would be $45k OTC plus $11k per year maintenance. That cut
in os/390 and vendor software costs could easily cover the z/VM costs.

Rob,

I appreciate your comments: We have the timer patch installed across 17
out of 18 linux images so that shouldn't be the problem. I have made
some changes to srm which removed users from E3.

I will be monitoring and tweaking as we go.

Hang with SLES7 on z/VM 4.3

2002-07-16 Thread Philip J. Tully

Hello all,

We have experienced a number of hang conditions with Suse 2.4.7 kernel

After 5-15minutes the problem goes away without any issue but an outage
of 5-15 minutes. Below are some displays.

Any recommendation where we should look?

Question on HIPERS vs QDIO

2002-06-20 Thread Philip J. Tully

Cross posted to VMESA-L and Linux-390 lists

Hello all,

I just created an LPAR for development of Linux/390 applications. We
have installed z/VM 4.3.
Now VLANs can be created as either type=hiper or type=qdio.
I was wondering which definition should be used for communication
amongst linux guests and the VM Tcpip stack?
Are there performance differences between the 2?
Are there functional differences now that Hiper supports multicast?

Re: z800 Storage

2002-06-18 Thread Philip J. Tully

There is no TSM server on Linux/390 (when it arrives it will only
support SCSI attached tape).
The TSM client is backlevel, currently Reiser is not officially
supported, it is supported on LINTEL.
TSM server on VM in deprecated and should be removed if they will not
upgrade it.

Authentication question..linux and beyond.

2002-06-13 Thread Philip J. Tully

Hello all,

We have been working on a number of interesting threads throughout the
organization with Linux. One of the hardest to get a handle on is
authentication, home directory definition, Uid etc.

We have an established NIS world directory structure but we are in the
process of moving portions to LDAP/Active Directory(AD).(Please no
attacks these decisions are well outside my area of control). We have
attempted to use the Samba WINDBIND package to provide domain
authentication. There is an issue with the local implementation issue
with domain trust relationships but when bypassing that issue for now it
seems to work. The question is how do we integrate the NIS information
into the mix? We are planning to move some NFS servers to LinZ, the
current permissions are in NIS. I am trying to find if any one has been
able to integrate NIS and AD?

The hardest part is the co-existence between the 2.

I completed IPL on the HMC including enabling the address on the 2074.

Re: Questions about TSM client for linz

2002-06-05 Thread Philip J. Tully

No problem Neale. I agree with your assessment and have not let the
local IBM rep off the hook for this one. He (and others) know why the
server is wanted and do not understand why Tivoli can't (won't) make a
business case for this platform. I have offered my mini-business case.
IBM is now publicly supporting a z/VM with linux solution to the world.
Pre-installed on each of these z/VM systems is a copy of the TSM
server. Over the past 12 months IBM has publicly stated that a number
of z900's/800's have been purchased with z/VM where no mainframe existed
before (just as important where no z/VM existed before). You know have
an operating system with backup solution on your floor. Now just to get
supportOh well there goes that solution!

BUT back to my original question. Does anyone have experience with TSM
client, ReiserFS and/or LVM on linux/390 (or linux/intel for that
matter).

Re: Questions about TSM client for linz

2002-06-05 Thread Philip J. Tully

Neale,

Let's start off with take a deep breath and relax, now exhale!

I have been through the stonewalling and misdirection's of Tivoli for
the past 6 years as well. I asked a question about the Client, which
states no support for ReiserFS, not the server. I am using the z/VM
server as a test bed because it takes weeks and paperwork to use the
more robust z/OS server.

To your point about DR, the current DR practices and procedures used
here do not generally involve TAPE. All 70+T of dasd is synchronously
remote mirrored. The use of TSM whether against a z/VM server or a z/OS
server is for day to day backups of applications and data not DR.

Having worked for a DR vendor and being in responsible for a DR plan at
a bank (where we had to declare a disaster) I understand your issues
with the product.

We are definitely running with an LVM. The current database areas have
plenty of space:
/dev/or2/lvor2 23G 5.0G 17G 22% /ora02
/dev/or3/lvor3 23G 4.2G 18G 19% /ora03
The problem is the input file isn't being recognized properly.

Oracle on linux/390

2002-05-28 Thread Philip J. Tully

Hello all,

We are in the process of evaluating Oracle on linux/390. One of the
Oracle Dba's provided a multi-volume input file to load the database.
After file 1 the load stops. It appears either Oracle does not recognize
the next file as being part of a mult-volume file or that file 1 is part
of a mult-volume file. The dba has taken the same file and was able to
load it on an Oracle system on another platform.

Any ideas how to get around this?

Thanks for the responses.
I am running the SuSE's SLES7 with Reiserfs support included.

I read the book as well as the last year of discussion on Reiserfs from
this list. Yet it became somewhat quiet in January and was wondering if
anyone had more recent experience.

I will start some Reiserfs testing on one of my systems today.

Process to move to a jfs on an existing system

2002-04-26 Thread Philip J. Tully

Hello all,

We are reviewing our options on using a journalized file system. My
initial concern is how do we move from ext2 to either ext3 or Reiserfs?
Does the data on the filesystem get erased during the conversion (I
know I back everything up but I need to allocate time)?

Are there known incompatibilities on linux/390?

We are using SLES7.

Lines of code question.

2002-04-02 Thread Philip J. Tully

Over the past year I have seen a chart showing the numbers of lines of
code contributed by IBM for the various portions
of Linux.
Kernel 2.2 total lines of code, 45,000 s/390 enabling lines of code or
2.05%

Does anyone have this type of breakdown for other platforms i.e.

Noticeably absent from the CA security products list was VM:Secure!
In the following statement "open-source PAM client to authenticate Linux
users directly against existing z/OS credentials."
you mention z/OS credential, if ACF2 is running in VM can it use these
credentials, or was VM left out of this also

VM virtual lan support routing?

2002-03-13 Thread Philip J. Tully

Cross posted
Hello all,

I am in the process of setting up a z/VM 4.2 system with virtual lan
support for connection between multiple linux/z systems and the internal
IP network

I am using routed since my production environement uses VIPA which
requires routed for redundancy and I will need to add that when I obtain
another subnet.

In the current scenario I am able to connect between the linux virtual
machines, between the linux guests and the VM tcpip stack. I am unable
to access my internal IP network though.

My physcial connection to the network is via 2 Cisco CIP router
connections.

the ETC GATEWAYS file looks like this :
NET 146.125.251.64 GATEWAY 146.125.251.65 METRIC 1 PERMANENT
I have also tried adding this second line: HOST 146.125.251.65 GATEWAY
146.125.1.200 METRIC 1 PERMANENT
My PROFILE TCPIP has the following coded:

ASSORTEDPARMS

I have a linux guest at 146.125.251.70 and 146.125.251.71.

Integration with host enviroment (AKA What I want to see from CA)

2002-02-14 Thread Philip J. Tully

Cross-posted with Rant mode on!

Ok so someone posted a comment about the non interface VMSecure has with
the Linux/z (LZ for short) when running under VM.

I will skip the argument about a security interface which should be
there but how about the following:

An interface into LZ so that when more disk space is needed on LZ
VMSecure responds with an appropriately formatted volume attached/linked
to the LZ Virtual machine so it can perform the LZ magic. Or let CA
come up with a LZ worker machine which does the LZ type formatting
before it is attached/linked to the LZ machine.

An interface with VMSchedule and/or VMBATCH to Autosys allowing for
workload process integration between the 2 levels (hypervisor / guest).

A signaling process where an LZ machine can have VMBACKUP take a snap
shot of a volume that is no longer being used by Linux (like the mirror
pair of a LVM mirror).

An interface in VM:Operator which would allow VM:Operator automation to
interface with LZ machines especially during IPL/Shutdown.

Yes I know each of these interface could be developed in house. But
with all this LZ activity I don't have the time to build them.

OH and that security interface wouldn't be a bad deal either.
