Do it in two steps: reiser=>ext3, SLES10=> SLES11. That way you have stable code in both steps. > Will the next recommendation be btrfs or ext4? Will they still be too > "new" to bet the house on? I don't recommend either yet. Btrfs isn't ZFS yet and there's no significant advantage or track record for ext4 yet. -- For LINUX-390 subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to lists...@vm.marist.edu with the message: INFO LINUX-390 or visit http://www.marist.edu/htbin/wlvindex?LINUX-390 -- For more information on Linux on System z, visit http://wiki.linuxvm.org/

I would wait until a system gets replaced or upgraded. I doubt very much that ext4 will ever be a SUSE Linux standard. btrfs might be, but not in the short term, and certainly not for SLES11. SLES12 would be the earliest, if at all. Then we shall just stick with ext3. Interesting - ext4 has been stable for quite a while now. Whilst even Ted (the maintainer) describes it as an interim step on the road to btrfs, I must admit to being surprised SLES11 didn't run with it as the default f/s. btrfs has some beaut features (especially if you have to shout down Solaris/ZFS bigots), but it ain't ready for prod yet. Convert filesystems now or wait for SLES1x?
We're going to be upgrading to SLES11 and we have the desire to standardize all of our file systems layouts. We did start out with a standard, but that has evolved over the years and it's now pretty stable, so we figure we might as well take the opportunity... Up til now we've used Reiser and would convert to ext3 as part of the rebuilds. But, should we leave all of this until the next upgrade? Will the next recommendation be btrfs or ext4? Will they still be too "new" to bet the house on?
