Hillgang Meeting - Sep 12 in Herndon Virginia

2012-08-16 Thread Neale Ferguson
Hold the date for the next Hillgang meeting at the CA office in Herndon
Virginia. Here's the agenda as it stands currently. I expect to add one more
presentation when travel is approved for the speaker. A brochure with
time/location details will be provided when the agenda is finalized.

* CA Support for VM SSI Yvonne Demeritt, CA
* Automation Scenarios for a z/VM Cluster and Linux on System z Guests
Tracey Dean, IBM
* Business Analytics and IBM System z Tom Heller, IBM

CA Support for VM SSI
-
This session will provide an overview of CA VM:Secure and CA VM:Director
directory management functions in an SSI environment. We will discuss the
latest enhancements to support this new environment as well as
recommendations on usage and set up of various CA products.

Automation Scenarios for a z/VM Cluster and Linux on System z Guests

As the Linux on System z environment continues to grow, the need for
software and solutions to manage this environment also grows. This session
will provide updated information on automating operations in a z/VM and
Linux on System z environment, including z/VM clusters.
Live demos can include how to:
· Automatically take action based on messages on z/VM service machines,
on Linux guest consoles, and in Linux syslog data
· View and interact with live consoles, for both monitoring and
debugging purposes
· Monitor and manage spool file and page space usage
· Send alerts to a central operations console (one per cluster) or a
central alerting system, such as IBM Netcool/OMNIbus or other systems that
accept SNMP traps
· Send e-mails based on console messages, spool usage, etc.
· Automatically archive logging data when a disk approaches full
The demos will use IBM's management software for z/VM and Linux on System z,
but the presentation will include requirements for implementing the
scenarios with other software.

Business Analytics and IBM System z
---
Businesses of all sizes want to maximize the value of their business data,
the stored knowledge of their business and their customers. The pressure to
make fast decisions in response to changes in business conditions or to spot
new opportunities grows every year. There has been a huge increase in the
requirements for access to all types of transactional data to support the
required decision making processes. IBM System Z servers have always been
designed to provide the ideal platform for managing large volumes of
business data. Additional features have been added to the design of the
latest generations of IBM System Z servers in order to greatly improve the
performance and reliability of business intelligence applications. This
presentation will give an overview of IBM's newest offerings in the area of
business analytics. It will also include a discussion of the role of
virtualization in the area of server consolidation, especially the
consolidation of many application layer servers onto System z.

Hillgang meeting 28 Mar

2012-03-19 Thread Neale Ferguson
While I believe all our meetings are good ones, I think the upcoming one is
overflowing with VM and Linux goodness:

Date: March 28, 2012
Location: Computer Associates
   2291 Wood Oak Drive
   Herndon VA
Time: 8:30 for 9:00 until 2pm

STASH - Jim Porell IBM
This session is an introduction to the Smart Terminal Architecture with
Secure Hosts (STASH). STASH utilizes the System z Bladecenter Extension
(zBX) as a desktop hosting environment running trusted thin client software.
Users can take advantage of the System z for computing and management
capabilities, greatly reducing the number of servers and thin client
deployment costs. Other technologies that complete the environment are
workload management software and a fraud detection solution that mitigates
insider threat. By combining mainframe virtualization management, security,
and thin client technology, organizations will be able to take advantage of
the power of the mainframe extended to trusted virtual desktop environments.

Speaker Bio: Jim Porell is an IBM Distinguished Engineer and Deputy CTO for
Federal Sales. In this role, Jim consults with and for US Government
agencies to assist them in removing costs, reducing risk and improving
security and resilience, while satisfying new business proposals. Most
recently, he was directing the Business Development activities for the
mainframe. Before that he was Chief Architect for the System z Software
Brand and the chairperson of the System z Software Design council which
includes all IBM mainframe operating systems and middleware, and looks at
synergy across servers and the evolution of each of IBM's server platforms
and operating systems.

In each of these roles, Jim's focus is to ensure that IBM deploys or
acquires technology across the System z operating systems, that work
consistently with other operating systems, to enable application growth for
IBM's customers, either by writing their own new applications or deploying
new code from Independent Software Vendors. Jim has been a security
consultant to customers and the US Government for over ten years and has
co-authored several books on security.
Jim has been with IBM for 32 years in a variety of management and technical
positions across the test, development and brand organizations in the Hudson
Valley region of New York and now working in the District of Columbia.

z/VM 6.2 Performance Update - Bill Bitner IBM
Significant changes were introduced to z/VM with Version 6 Release 2 (GA
December 2, 2011). This presentation will discuss the associated performance
changes, in particular, the performance of Single System Image (SSI)
clusters and Live Guest Relocation (LGR). How quickly can z/VM relocate a
running Linux virtual machine? What factors influence LGR performance? Does
LGR activity influence the performance of other virtual machines? All these
questions and more, will be answered in this session.

Linux on System z: Some Get it and Others Don¹t - Len Diegel
One of the challenges of System z (mainframe) advocates today is getting the
message through to upper management. This session covers several issues,
including the cultural differences, inhibitors, and real customer situations
and the results of their migrations. The session is based on data
collected by Velocity Software, IBM, CA, Gartner, and others.

z/VM 6.2 Increasing the Endless Possibilities of Virtualization - Bill
Bitner IBM
By now you have probably heard about z/VM 6.2 delivering on the promise of
Single System Image (SSI) Clusters and Live Guest Relocation (LGR). It all
sounds cool, but are you struggling with where to use it? Wondering what
makes it different than other virtualization solutions? This session has two
objectives. First, to validate that this isn't just another clustering or
guest mobility solution. There are over 2500 years of virtualization
experience behind SSI and LGR, and that experience shows through. Second, we
discuss some ways that SSI and LGR allow you greater flexibility and better
business models. Some of these are fairly conventional, some are a little
off the normal thought process.

Next Hillgang Meeting

2011-10-03 Thread Neale Ferguson
The next meeting of Hillgang, the DC z/VM and Linux on z user group, will be
at the Herndon office of CA on October 19 (8:30 for 9). The current
abstracts are below. I'm expecting an update to one of these abstracts and
maybe an addition to the program as well.

z/VM Update - Richard Lewis IBM
---
Have you heard about IBM's Statement of Direction regarding Single System
Image (SSI) clusters and Guest Mobility? If so, then you are probably
wondering how you're going to get from here to there. This session will
explore various methodologies for converting existing z/VM environments into
an SSI cluster.

Manage, Monitor and Protect Linux on z - CA
--
As cost reduction and operational efficiency continue to be key IT drivers,
organizations need more effective ways to evaluate, provision and manage
workloads on the most efficient platform possible. Join us for a discussion
on how the use of a holistic approach to running, monitoring and managing
Linux on System z can help you achieve the economies of scale you need to
grow your business while lowering risk and cost.

User Experiences with DataMart on Linux for System z at FMS - Jim Moling
---
This session will present a user experience that focuses on the Linux for
System z implementation of a hybrid DataMart model that incorporates an
operational data store (ODS) model with the traditional DataMart model. This
hybrid implementation draws upon the traditional data mart model to provide
aggregate data and the ODS model to provide more detailed transactional
data. As such, the configuration and implementation using Virtual Linux
Servers under z/VM on a z10 processor will be presented, which includes the
use of IBM's Websphere DataStage product for extraction, transformation and
loading (ETL) of data into a DB2 based repository from several external
databases. Challenges faced and resolved during the implementation of this
configuration will be discussed. Finally, resource requirements, i.e. IFL,
memory and SAN space as well as performance statistics of the production
DataMart implementation will be presented.

Re: Presentations from March 15 Hillgang meeting available for do wnload

2005-03-17 Thread David Boyes
I'm still not sure what to do about all this. Others have
 recommended using
some sort of content management system for the site. None of
 those run on
z/VM-CMS so far as I'm aware, and that's where the site is
 hosted. I don't
own the domain name, so I can't arbitrarily move the site to
 a different
host. The domain name has gotten reasonably famous so I
 don't really want
 to use a different one.

One question: how important is it that the site be hosted on a CMS-based
WWW server? If not at all (or it's not a question of resources on the
hosting machine), use of a Linux-based content management system running
as a guest might be an elegant solution.

At least Drupal is known to work nicely on mainframe Linux, and I'd be
willing to supply a drop-in appliance Linux system that could support
such an approach. From there, it's just content migration and some DNS
hacking. It also might be a good opportunity to mirror the site
elsewhere in case of connectivity problems (there are excellent tools
for that in Linux that I don't think work on the CMS WWW servers).

To me, not at all important. To the site's sponsor, that's perhaps a very
different matter. (Who, for the record, has been very good to me and hence
this community.)

I'll be thinking and talking about this whole topic with others for a while.
In the meantime, to stave off the wolves at the front door (overly harsh
imagery, I know, but it's what came to mind), I've put some of the more
important items from the last month or so on the main page.

2005-03-16 Thread Tom Duerbusch
Hi Mark.

This may be a dumb question, but everytime I look at linuxvm.org, I
find that most of the stuff on the first page is from early 2003. That
doesn't lead me to believe that this site is being maintained.

I do have a refreshed page as the Last updated on: Tuesday March 15,
2005 would lead me to believe that I do have a refreshed copy.

Just a suggestion, perhaps you can move the old stuff to a historical
area. The home page of a website should always appear to be current and
have pointers to the useful information. I assume that the links on the
left side of the page, point to current info, but you couldn't tell by
the home page.

Perhaps expanding the left column to include a last updated date
field for each link.

I've brought this up a few times before in the list. I haven't had time to
keep up with the mailing list traffic, so that has stagnated. The rest of
the site is pretty well current, however.

I'm still not sure what to do about all this. Others have recommended using

Moving all the old stuff off, and having a largely blank main page doesn't
sound very attractive. Adding last updated tags to each link would be way
too busy/cluttered, so I don't think I'll do that.

I'm still considering what I'm going to do. I'll let the list know what it
is.

Can you get a different hostname in the domain and redirect?

As old as the stuff is, I don't think it matters either way. Do you have
the ability to put any static content in place? Perhaps the site could be
used as a static cache for content managed somewhere else.

The brochure for the next Hillgang meeting, which will be held on April
8 at

CA's office in Herndon, may be found at:
http://www.vm.ibm.com/events/hillgang.pdf

Follow the instructions at the bottom of the brochure to register.

The agenda for this meeting is:

- Breakfast - Brought to you by: IBM
- Virtual Networking with z/VM Guest LANs and the z/VM Virtual
Switch
- Alan Altmark
- How to print using CUPS - David Boyes
- A quick peak at Linux 2.6 - Neale Ferguson
- User stories from the floor

SPECIAL NOTICE
Please bring a name badge from any past conference (SHARE, WAVV, CMG).
The older or more obscure the better. This will save time and effort of
creating one before the meeting and should be a good conversation
starter.

ABSTRACTS
Virtual Networking with z/VM Guest LANs and the z/VM Virtual Switch

Did you know that you could create virtual LAN segments that connect
your z/VM guests together without the need for all those messy
point-to-point connections? And did you know you could do that without
creating new subnets? Come to this session to hear the latest on how,
and when, to use z/VM Guest LANs and the z/VM Virtual Switch. We'll
also talk about z/VM's support for IEEE Virtual LANs (VLANs).

How to print using CUPS

The speaker will discuss how to set up print servers with CUPS; queue
management, form definitions, printer descriptions, and more.

A Sneak Peak at Linux 2.6

The past few months have seen a flurry of activity as 2.6 was readied
for general availability. Well GA has arrived. For those of us who like
to live on the bleeding edge, the code is available to download, build
and use. I've been examining the status of the kernel and, in
particular, the S/390 implementation since the -test3 release. In this
presentation I'll present some of my findings and explain what
differences you will encounter when moving from the 2.4 kernel.

User Stories from the Floor

We'll take some time towards the end of the meeting to find out what
people are doing with their z/VM and Linux systems. We'll also open the
floor to questions and discussion on any relevant topic.

PARKING
Parking is available in CA parking lot. Please go to the main entrance
of the building and register at the front desk.
