Yes, but I'm using the '-k' to keep the existing label.
(This is the z/VM label as well, right?)

Re: dasdfmt assistance

2018-07-09 Thread Frank M. Ramaekers
The response "Try 'dasdfmt --help' for more information" isn't very helpful.
First, more information for what? There was no prior message. Secondly, the
syntax appears good (as far as I can tell).
I'm using the '-k' instead if the '-l volser' to keep the z/VM volume serial
number:

   -l volser or --label=volser
  Specify the volume serial number or volume identifier to be
written to disk after formatting. If no label is specified, a sensible default
is used. volser is interpreted as ASCII string and is
  automatically converted to uppercase and then to EBCDIC.

  e.g. -l LNX001 or --label=DASD01

  The volser identifies by serial number the volume. A volume
serial number is 1 through 6 alphanumeric or one of the following special
characters: $, #, @, %. Enclose a serial number that  contains
  special characters in apostrophes. If the number is shorter than
six characters, it is padded with trailing blanks.

  Do not code a volume serial number as SCRTCH, PRIVAT, or Ln
(L with five numbers); these are used in OS/390 messages to ask the operator to
mount a volume. Do not code a volume serial number
  as MIGRAT, which is used by the OS/390 Hierarchical Storage
Manager DFSMShsm for migrated data sets.

  NOTE: Try to avoid using special characters in the volume serial.
This may cause problems accessing a disk by volser.
  In case you really have to use special characters, make sure you
are using quotes. In addition there is a special handling for the '$' sign.
Please specify it using '\$' if necessary.

  e.g. -l 'a@b\$c#' to get A@B$C#

   -k or --keep_volser
  Keeps the Volume Serial Number, when writing the Volume Label.
This is useful, if the Serial Number has been written with a VM Tool and should
not be overwritten.

Is it a fullpack minidisk? If not, then you need to format/label the

Is it a fullpack minidisk? If not, then you need to format/label the minidisk.

Outside of Linux (it's a fullpack -1 cyl minidisk--reserving the 1st cyl for
z/vm label and allocation map)?

dasdfmt -b 4096 -d cdl  -l LX0108 -p -y -f /dev/dasdi
Try 'dasdfmt --help' for more information.

I see code in dasdfmt on github:

if (info.keep.volser) {
  :

  if (dasdfmt_get_volser(dev_filename,
 &info.dasd_info, old_volser) == 0)
vtoc_volume_label_set_volser(&vlabel, old_volser);
  else
ERRMSG_EXIT(EXIT_FAILURE,

prog_name, dev_filename);

}

Somethin' ain't right.

Good catch...the web page I was using has a '-f', but perhaps they meant

Without the nonexistent switch, it formats.

Once you formatted the entire volume with CPFMTXA, it was (mostly) filled
with 4096-byte records of zero, erasing all residual data in the process.
But dasdfmt is going to do it again (sans the -f option, as you found),
writing the label.

This can be done without re-formatting all the same cylinders again, but
it's not worth it for only 10K cyls.

There is a later s390utils in Red Hat's RawHide archive, with
a man page showing a 2006 date. Neither that man page, nor
the --help show the 'lower case f' option

It rebuilds locally as a scratch build thus:

$ rpmbuild --rebuild --define 'build_cflags %nil'  --define \
'build_ldflags %nil'  s390utils-2.5.0-1.fc29.src.rpm

Those two 'defines' are to accomodate some changes in rpmbuild
in its macro set since the stabilization fork of their
development line from about Fedora 19 or 20. We are about
five years past that :)

In passing, I think you said this was a minidisk that was 1 cylinder short. Is
cyl 0 the missing cyl, and the rest of the disk from 1-end the location of the
minidisk? If so, there’s no label on the minidisk part to preserve- you need to
supply one. The minidisk can’t see the real volume label in cyl 0 .

Is it a fullpack minidisk? If not, then you need to format/label the

Hi,

just to clear things up, the option -f/--device was deprecated
for quite some time and got removed with s390-tools 1.37.1:

https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/linux390/s390-tools-1.37.1.html

Also, I agree that the message "Try --help..." isn't very helpful.
There should be a bit more logic to it and tell the user what
option was wrongly specified (will look into it).

I saw that you were able to resize your volume. Are your dasdfmt issues
solved? If not, let me know.

Regards,
Jan

In passing, I think you said this was a minidisk that was 1 cylinder short. Is
cyl 0 the missing cyl, and the rest of the disk from 1-end the location of the
minidisk? If so, there’s no label on the minidisk part to preserve- you need to
supply one. The minidisk can’t see the real volume label in cyl 0 .

hmmm ... a early 2017 removal

Perhaps there is a workflow issue in s390-tools that the man

accurately reflect when it was most recently changed in the

Okay, I'm now stuck at expanding the logical volume (the whole purpose of this
exercise was to expand the /home mount point).

I'm to the point of:

xfs_growfs /home
xfs_growfs: /home is not a mounted XFS filesystem

Hmmmnot a XFS, then what is it? 'df' only shows that it is a ext4:

df -Th

tmpfstmpfs 100M 0  100M   0% /run/user/1000

So, how do I know what filesystem was used for this?

xfs is a filesystem. So is ext4

see

If you want to expand a mount, I would probably just set up a:

1. new xfs partition of the desired size, and mount it, at
say:
/tmp/home

2. then rsync the content over:

rsync -av /home/. /tmp/home/.

3. run the command twice, 'just in case'

4. umount /home, and /tmp/home

5. manually edit /etc/fstab to point to the new one

6. get SElinux properly set:
a. # touch /.autorelabel
b. # reboot

(the system will relabel)

The former [ext4 formated] /home/ partition may be scratched

Resize2fs seems to work just fine:

resize2fs /dev/mapper/clefos_mfclef00-home resize2fs 1.42.9 (28-Dec-2013)
Filesystem at /dev/mapper/clefos_mfclef00-home is mounted on /home; on-line
resizing required old_desc_blocks = 3, new_desc_blocks = 4 The filesystem on
/dev/mapper/clefos_mfclef00-home is now 8076288 blocks long.

xfs is a filesystem. So is ext4

see
man mount

If you want to expand a mount, I would probably just set up a:

1. new xfs partition of the desired size, and mount it, at
say:
/tmp/home

2. then rsync the content over:

rsync -av /home/. /tmp/home/.

3. run the command twice, 'just in case'

4. umount /home, and /tmp/home

5. manually edit /etc/fstab to point to the new one

6. get SElinux properly set:
a. # touch /.autorelabel
b. # reboot

(the system will relabel)

The former [ext4 formated] /home/ partition may be scratched
