input requested on running SAP on z/Linux

2010-08-03 Thread Bruce . Lightsey
We are in the research and planning stage of a project that will probably
be an SAP implementation with DB2 as the database back-end.

Currently, we run DB2 on AIX, Linux under z/VM, Linux under VMWare, and on
z/OS ( plus a new Win 2008r2 server).
We also run a passel of WebSphere application servers on AIX and Linux
under VMWare.

With that as background, I am looking for input from current SAP shops on
the process of determining the platform for implementing SAP - both the app
server portion and the DB portion.
Why should I choose/avoid Linux on Z for any portion ( I will admit that I
am biased toward Linux on Z ) and is there a benefit from running on DB2
LUW over DB2 z/OS or vice-versa ?

I have a couple of RedBooks but any decent whitepapers, RedBooks,
RedPieces, etc will be gratefully accepted.

Thanks,

2010-08-03 Thread Rich Smrcina

Bruce,

The SAP App Server on Linux for System z only supports the database on
DB2 for z/OS. Sadly, DB2 LUW (even Linux on System z) is not an option.

Like the other poster indicated, if you can get an opportunity to talk
to Mark you should do so. He actually gave a good presentation here at
SHARE about their setup, experiences and motivation.

SAP does not certify having the database (regardless of what flavor) on Linux
for System z. The rest of the setup can be on Linux for System z, but not that
one piece.

One of my larger customers is running SAP on Linux for System z (using z/VM),
with DB2 running on z/OS. They're trying to move away from AIX for this
particular use. They have two CECs for redundancy (both are running z/OS, z/VM
and Linux), dynamic routing and VIPA to everything, etc. Big and complex, but
it runs well for them.

I have a Large customer, that over the past 18 months has implemented SAP
running the application servers on z/Linux and the DB2 on z/OS. The main
key points, HA with Parallel Sysplex and WLM. I would be more than happy to
speak with you on my experience.
