I've seen CD audio cables that have three different connectors on the
sound card end, to cover all the bases. Find one.

You probably have the MIDI address set wrong. If it's at 0x330, try
0x300, or vice-versa. If you have a proper SB16 with jumpers, setting
things up the way you want is easy. If you have a PnP version, it's
a pain, but look for a midi line in your /etc/conf.modules (You've
got wav files playing, so you're past the hard part.)

Try another MP3 player. (X11amp works well with my SB16, while the
other one I tried didn't work at all.) If that's not it, then possibly
you have the 8-bit DMA address set right and the 16-bit DMA address set
wrong or something.

Good luck.

Hi,

I'm about to build myself a new Linux box and wanted some feedback
about the hardware I have selected for it. (I am going to use Caldera
1.3 in it).

Motherboard:Asus P5A (rev 1.0.4) [Dabs Direct] socket 7/
Asus P5S-vm (as long as AMD K7 can be
supported)

CPU:AMD K6-3/K7 (when it comes out) 450-500mhz

Ram:128mb SDRAM PC100

Hard drive: large UDMA > 10gb (not sure what make)

Graphics card: AGP possibly ATI xpert 98/99 or ATI Xpert @
work 8/12mb (must be compatible with Linux)

CDROM:  >=40x IDE (possibly Panasonic/Creative - compatible
with Linux)

Floppy disk:Generic

Mouse: 3 button Microsoft - serial port

Keyboard: win 95 (104)

Box: ATX power supply, with 2, 5.25" drive
bays and 2, 3.5" bays

Printer:Epson colour 640

Soundcard: Creative labs PCI (16bit)

Tv card:Hauppage/ati compat.-(connects with graphics
card)

The other hardware such as the monitor and modem, I already have.

Thanks for any help

Craig

Hi from a fellow newbie.

Sounds to me like when you used FDISk you forgot to format the Jaz
disk as ext2 , as needed by Linux.

Probably the Jaz disk is pre formatted as Windoze compatible Fat32, on
which Linux can't be installed.

If you are a totally newbie i recommend you to get version 5.9 of
RedHatdon't know where to get it, but in this version your gfx-card is
presented(G100 with 4 or 8mb ram)...This is the easiest way to solved the
problem, if you haven't use linux before

If you have a little more experience i think you should download the newest
version of XFree at www.xfree86.org and install this...

I had the same problem af you, but thanks to some nice people at this
newsgroup, my problem was solved.like i hope your is soon...

I'm thinking about getting an external CD-ReWritable drive for my system. I
figured what ever my choice in media is, it should be an external device so
I can use it with several system easily.

Here are my questions:
Has anyone had any problems/success with the "BackPack" family? Best price
I've found is $339.
Same Question for the external HPs - best price $329.

Any reason why I should avoid going with this solution?

Also, is it true that some older CD-ROM drives will not be able to READ
CD-RW disks? This is not a (major) issue, but was just wondering.

Please respond to [EMAIL PROTECTED] or this newsgroup

Thanks!

If you can find an old Digiboard PC/8 it would be perfect.

The Digiboard Serial I/O products is the best choice for Linux.

With the PC/8 card you don't need any driver. Just use the setserial program
to configure each port.

Frank.

I have always used cut and paste whereever possible, even when I was
programming on paper tape. I always type both parentheses (or begin..end's)
before inserting the code. I always use editor macro's to insert blocks of
repetitive code. I don't do this primarily as a timesaver, but as a means of
ensuring accuracy. I gear my methods to the kind of machine I am likely to be
working on, rather than the worst situation that could possibly arise. I
can't imagine trying to make myself less dependent on the mouse just in case
I have to dig out a typewriter one day.

Modern programming environments tend to be much more helpful and configurable
than the old editors.

This is an area where everyone has very individual preferences (see the vi vs.
emacs wars.)

   That's a bad tip.

Wait until you find a system without a mouse, just a console.
A router or small web server would probably not have a mouse!
Perhaps you should learn to spell and type - these are generally
a plus for people who plan on hiring you.

A 386SX-16 with 4M and a 20M disk will run Linux and Ghostscript.

A midrange 486 or better is probably preferred, though, as is 16M RAM;
any Pentium will be more than ample.

Some shells do filename completion with the tab key.

You don't say what version of Ghostscript you have. A few people have
reported that the more recent versions - 5.10 and 5.50 - work faster
for their PCL lasers. Try the SuSE 5.50 update or Aladdin's rpm.

Tip: Make a link from /dev/tape to /dev/nht0 and loose the
"-f /dev/nht0".

I don't know "dump", but the "mt" stuff looks OK. Maybe try
"fsf 2" or "eof".

I find "afio" does a good job, allowing your multiple usage and
compressed archives.

I use something like

find . -xdef | afio -ozZv -b 32k -c 64 -L /var/log/afio tape_host:/dev/nst0

Play with -b & -c for best speed.

Hello all,

I've got a problem accessing my AGFA SnapScan 310 scanner attatched
to a ASUS SC200 SCSI card although the find-scanner command says

find-scanner: found scanner "AGFA SNAPSCAN 310 1.10" at device /dev/scanner
find-scanner: found scanner "AGFA SNAPSCAN 310 1.10" at device /dev/sg0

The scanimage --help command says
:
:
:
List of available devices:
pnm:0 pnm:1

cat /proc/scsi/scsi says:

Attached devices:
Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 02 Lun: 00
Vendor: AGFA Model: SNAPSCAN 310 Rev: 1.10
Type: Scanner ANSI SCSI revision: 02

Does anybody have an idea what the problem is?

Thank you

Ralph

But if it was a software failure, it should also happen under window$,
but it doesn't!
Any other idea?

Are you using a Soundblaster Vibrax? If so, read the file VIBRAX in the directory
Documentation/ in you linux sources directory.

There is a project underway called Koobase that is aimed to be similar
to Cubase. It isn't there yet, but at least parts of it are working.

I could configure a card like that on a 2.2.x kernel, even with FULL DUPLEX.
Check the Documentation of the new kernel's...

If you want, i can send you my isapnp.conf and conf.modules, but for that
send me an email ( slug (at) alumni.dee.uc.pt ) so i can remember

Of course not, and it's not necessary in the first place.
A "CD" will do just fine (provided you are using a decent shell).

Odd, I have the Ensoniq AudioPCI, which, under Windows98, uses Soundblaster
64 PCI software without a hitch. Red Hat Linux 5.2 supports it just fine. So
far, most of the installation problems I've
