First of all, Thanks Mike !

So I reset the CONFIG_X86_PN_OFF option in "make config" as NO. After
recompiling, the booting procedure
 seemed to be O.K.
After the hardware checking is done, like device checking, This
messages comes out.
"Freeing unused kernel memory : 68K freed
Kernel panic : no init found
 Try passing init=option to Kernel".

I have no idea what's wrong.

 Thanks!

Hi,

I am about to add a modem to 486 running Slack V3.0.

I seemed to remember that I have visited a site that lists
supported modems.I know I should have bookmarked it. I have tried
searching the www using various searches but in most cases the lists
are so long as to be impractical. At one site a list was found but it
was in ,gz form which will be ok one when I am running a modem and
access under linux. But my current internet access route is a windoze
machine.

I have various internal modems that I can use :-
ZOLTRIX RPI modem (14.4k)
GVC 28.8
Supra 33.6i
Cardinal Connecta 56K

I would prefer to use the later because I have one in a PC
that is no longer used for phone access.

From memory the Connecta was useable, but as mentioned
previously, I cannot find the web site again.

I also believe I can use the Zoltrix but by not using the RPI
function. Does anyone know how to disable the RPI function in the
modem when using Slack?

Once I get it running I will only using it to access
newsgroups and possibly an e-mail list (linked with linux).

The old BIOS in the PC on which I'm trying to use the LS120 doesn't
autodetect it, so I will need to manually enter the values.
(I believe that it has 1736 tracks when used with a 120MB disk?)

I'm hoping that by making the LS120 the IDE bus master, and setting the
boot seqence to C: then A:, that I'll be able to boot from a 1.44 Mb
  floppy.

You shouldn't have to use the BIOS to use the LS120. Just create a
  directory-mount e.g. /mnt/ls120 and add a line to /etc/fstab :
  /dev/hdx /mnt/ls120msdosnoauto,owner,rw0 0
  (where x is the IDE-port, a,b,c or d)
This should work. Then you can directly mount it by 'mount /dev/hdx'
and accessing it by 'cd /mnt/ls120' or something like that.

Maybe so. But first I have to be running Linux, which means I have to
boot Linux, which means I have to boot from a 1.44Mb floppy (my
'cold-start' floppy) in the LS120, because there's nothing on the HD
(it's a new one) and there's nothing else to boot from (I'm away from
 home).
So I really do need those values for the number of LS120
 cylinders/heads/sectors.

Did you try to boot from the LS-120 like from an ordinary floppy drive?
Because Linux detects the LS-120 hardware without problems and will find the

The Jaton WinCOMM V.90 based on the Cirrus Logic CL-M5620T chip may work
with a GPLed "Linmodem driver." The Jaton WinCOMM V.90 SL and WinCOMM II
are based on the Cirrus Logic/Ambient HaM (MD5628) chipset and are

Steer clear unless you like to tinker with modems.

Date: Thu, 21 Sep 2000 11:40:50 GMT

I'm looking for recommendations for a keypad for use with a Linux
project. Requirements:

-weatherproof
-low cost: I only need one for now so surplus or used is ok
-can be read easily using some simple script language (hopefully python?)
-probably a serial port connection, but any interface that's easy to connect
without costly extras and can run 10m to my computer will do;
prefer if it will work happily with 4 conductor cable.
-actual character set doesn't matter, but some extra chars beyond 0-9
would be nice.
-much prefer if it does not require external power connections, but would
like some illumination
-I'm located in Canada; the nearer the source, the better.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

You'll always need loading of kernel modules =) But what you mean is
propably that the install will set up things for you. I'd recommend an Intel
EEPro 100 Mbit card or a D-Link DFE530TX but any NE2000 compatible PCI card
should do alrite if you don't need 100Mbps.

If your mouse works on the console, then it is an X problem.

Press Ctrl+Alt+F2 to get a console. Log in and see if you can use the mouse.

If you have a PS/2 Wheel Mouse, your XF86.Config should have the following:

 Buttons 5
 ZAxisMapping 4 5

In the proper syntax for your version of X.

Subject: IRQ conflicts and PCI cards
Date: Thu, 21 Sep 2000 16:31:59 -0500

Hello,

I'm running Linux Mandrake 7.1, and am having problems with an
IRQ conflict between the PCI modem and NVIDIA's graphics driver,
which both want IRQ 3. As a result, if I first dial-up and then try to
startx, the X server freezes, and if I startx and then try to dial-up,
the modem cannot "get terminal I/O params." (Yes, I can dial-up
outside X, xor run X just fine.)

Since I don't have any ISA cards (in fact my motherboard doesn't
have any ISA slots), isapnp tools (pnpdump in particular) don't
give me any information to work with --- it just comes back with
"no boards found."

I guess I could install a 2.3 series kernel and let honest-to-God pnp
take care of the mess. However, is there some other relatively easy
solution for this problem? A few pointers to the right tools would be
sufficient, but complete solutions are always welcome. :-)

Thanks much!

I got handed a new work machine, based on an Intel D815EEA all-in-one type
motherboard. It came with Windows 98SE, now I've also got Linux (Red Hat
6.2) running, so I can pass on a couple of things:

The built-in ultra66/100 controller works, on the Quantum Fireball
20gig that it came with anyways. I went from 4mb to 25mb/sec by
turning on dma which was off by default (hdparm -d1).

I had problems with the built-in ethernet. It shows up as eepro100
in Windows, but the FOUR different eepro100 drivers I got from
various linux places didn't work. However, Intel offers a linux
driver, e100, which DOES work. I got it from here:

  http://support.intel.com/support/network/adapter/pro100/30504.htm

The built-in video was disabled, it's useing a Matrox card instead,
so it works in that fashion. :-)

Now, sound: Apparently this motherboard can have 2 different AC '97 sound
setups, described as:

basic, "soft" audio, ICH2 component and an Analog Devices AD1885
analog codec.

enhanced, Creative Labs ES1373 AC '97 digital controller and a
Crystal Semiconductor CS4297 stereo audio codec.

I'm pretty sure I have
