I recommend putting the swap partition on the second drive along

Subject: Modem is "busy" - PCI IRQ Sharing problem
Date: Mon, 01 Jan 2001 16:47:05 -0800

I am unable to get my modem (US Robotics 56K FAX INT controller-based PCI,
3COM/USR 3CP5610 family, OEM 2977 model) to work in Linux, although it works
very well in Windows 98. My research to date leads me to believe the problem
is Linux PCI IRQ sharing related, but I don't know what steps to take to resolve
it short of moving PCI cards around (which I strongly prefer to avoid).

The story:

I recently completed an almost successful installation of Caldera 2.3
(2.2.10) and KDE 1.1.1. I am amazed (and refreshed) with the ease of
use and the performance. I am new to Linux, but have a lot of Unix and
software development experience.

I have an ABIT BE6 motherboard with 733MHz CPU, 128M RAM, PCI Bus, 3Com NIC,
Sound Blaster 128, ATI XPERT 99 Video Card, Adaptec SCSI Controller,
HPT366 IDE UDMA 66 Controller, USR Robotics 56K FAX INT modem (OEM 2977
controller based), Intel PCI Bus Master IDE Controller.

I have partitioned the hard drive to dual boot Windows 98 and Linux via
BootMagic. I have no issues in Windows (other than those that Microsoft
provides) and I prefer to leave the hardware settings where they are so
as not to upset Windows.

I use "ide0=0xb400,0xb802" to boot the kernel from within the lilo.conf file.
I learned how to do this in the HPT366 IDE FAQ for the UDMA66 issue.

I recompiled the kernel per the USR FAQ on netllama (since then I learned that
this was not necessary) so that the COM5 modem uses /dev/ttyS4 (= /dev/modem).
When I try to access /dev/modem via kppp, it reports "Sorry, the modem is busy".
I have spent countless hours trying to fix this and have run out of options.
It appears the problem is due to the HPT366 UDMA66 and the USR Modem sharing IRQ 10.
I'd prefer to not move PCI cards around since Windows 98 is happy right
now. I have also tried to use ttyS2 and ttyS3 with various setserial settings.

Should setpci be used? Any suggestions?

I have attached files below to help convey the status of my configuration.

Thanks for your assistance,
   Nader

Hi,

has anybody here tried disk capacities (RAID) in the range of Terabytes
in Linux? Will RAID controllers (I mainly use the AMI MegaRaids for
Linux) support single devices of such a size (when using enough 75 GB
drives for example) with the linux drivers? The e2fs limit should IMHO
be at least 2 TB, but I'm a bit unsure if it's possible to access such
a big "drive" through the drivers, so I'd love to hear from someone who's
already done it...

Thanx, Florian

Will CCD camera work under Linux??

Why asking? I have a home security system installed (DIY) that
can alerm and dial out if something goes wrong. I am thinking to
connect the signal to PC running Linux with CCD camera so that
the break-in images can be recorded. A simple idea, right?

Any info/suggestions will be very appreciated. Thanks.

Hmm, could have done that, but to much installed, too much to change
now (and I cannot spare the time). Besides, even if X going bogus, I
should be able to telnet into the machine, right (which I couldn't)?

This I am more would like to know more about. I know netscape was
active when my latest crash occured, but the crash was instantaneously
(no discaccess, screen activity nor keyboard/mouse actions after the
crash. Is the netscape crash that fast on the system (and how does it
do that)?

The SCSI bus must be "terminated" on both ends: Chances are the basic
SCSI you have doesn't let you plug internal SCSI devices like CDROMs
or HDs, so that end is safe, but the *other* end, ie. the scanner,
could be the problem. Take the SCSI card and the documentation that
came with your scanner to a computer store, and buy a SCSI terminar
(probably the DB25 sort.)

Hi,

Many people complained they could not run videocards with Trident
3DImage975 (9750) chipset at decent resolutions (usually, the screen
just remained black at something like 1024x768).
I also spent some time on a Jaton videocard with this chipset, and now
I can squeeze any resolution out of it (up to 1200x1024), with decent
color depths:

bpp/resolution 640x480 800x600 1024x768 1152x864 1200x1024
8 * ****
16* ****
24* **--
32* **--

The recipe is kind-of simple, but strange: one needs to use _particular_
orders of resolutions in the "Modes" line. (I did not touch Modelines.)
The details are at

http://www.math.sunysb.edu/~comech/tools/3DImage975.html

If you have time and need to try this recipe, I'd appreciate to hear
from you whether this (or some modification) solves your problems with
this chipset.

Hope this will help someone,
Andrew

PS. I guess this would also work for 3DImage985 chipset... I do not know.

Hi all;

Has anyone had luch in getting the Pioneer DRM-604 to work successfully with
RH 5.2?

The system seems to recognize the disk, and mounting the devices causes the
disks to be selected, etc., but I get errors, and the filesystem cannot be
read. The device is in mint condition (despite being vintage 1994; I never
could get it to work acceptably with Win 95. I could read disks, but Win 95
kept remounting all of them periodically).

Has anyone had success with this device?

Think Big, Leslie. My workhorse system has 6GB of RAM and 56 drives
attached. Ultimately when your system grows it outgrows controller
boundaries. Then you need a software RAID to bind pieces together.
Besides, cost of hardware controllers mounts pretty quickly when
your system gets bigger. I imagine if Ilya could spare some megabucks
he spent on EMC or HP or other hardware RAID with Ingo he would
win big money in the end with software LVM.
