What I was doing wrong: Starting Linux from Win98 using loadlin. I was doing this because I couldn't get the boot menu I setup in config.sys to work. I solved the menu problem with help from the newsgroup by putting the loadlin command in the autoexec.bat instead of the config.sys file. Rebooted, selected Linux on the boot menu, and viola! Linux came up and the FA311 configured and has worked fine since. My guess: Win98 configures the card for itself and doesn't unconfigure it when I run loadlin. John Hart wrote: I kept at it and I did get my FA311 to work! I formatted my Linux partition and reinstalled Caldera Desktop 2.4. Downloaded and compiled natsemi and pci-scan. Seems to work fine although I have to set ip addresses via COAS each time I boot the machine. (Don't know how to fix this yet - Newbie issues). NOTE: I did not add the 'Alias' line as instructed. I can ftp, and ping fine...still working to perfect samba though. So there is hope! Don't toss that card! John [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote in message news:8p0jjq$6o0$[EMAIL PROTECTED]... Everything loaded and seemed to be fine I added the 'alias eth0 natsemi' line to the /etc/modules.conf file and rebooted. When the network tried to come up I got the following error twice: SIOCSIFFLAGS: resource temporarily unavailable lsmod shows that natsemi is loaded and ifconfig shows that eth0 is configured, but it does have a hardware address (mac) of 00. I have NE2000 cards which are PCI cards that cost $12 a piece and have both RJ45 and BNC plugs and I just recently got a hub that supports both connectors also, and has 8 ports for only $25. I have a couple of 486s I want to network together, they both appear to be hayes compatible modems. Modems are used to make a serial connection of computers over a phone-line and will need a phone-line. NULL-modems are a serial cable connected between two computers without any modem or phone-line involved. The only difference to the computer is that the modem setup will require some extra paramters sent to the modems to make one of them dial the correct number and make the other one answer the call. From when the modems have connected they will behave just like a NULL-modem except that it will be possible to hang up the connection. If your computers are close to each other, skip the modems and use only the serial ports and a null modem cable. It is easier and cheaper than to fake a phone line. regards Henrik -- spammer strikeback: root@localhost [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- From: Swietanowski Artur [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Laser printers Date: Sun, 20 Jun 1999 20:19:22 +0200 Duncan wrote: I've been looking round for a low-end laser printer that will work fine with Linux. snip So, the only printer I can find near that price with hardware PostScript support is the Brother HL-1070 at £323 (not so much of a crisis).
