A LOT of people are getting this error, and not just on Linux. I'd say
there's a problem with cdrecord. I'm using 1.9-3, which is the latest for
Linux-Mandrake. I use to have Redhat 6.2 on the same box (same
box/hardware) and gtoaster worked. Under Linux-Mandrake 7.2, it doesn't.

I've a Compaq Presario 1200 XL 109 with 64MB/6Gb, and I'm running Red
Hat 6.1 kernel 2.2.14. The installation was not without its problems,
videocard (cyberblade i7, I think the refresh rates of the LCD) and
sound (via686 onboard) where the problem area's. But I got a working
XFree86.conf from the internet, solved that one in 15 minutes. The
soundcard was recognized by the red hat oss drivers, but didn't work,
giving a error message 'device busy'. I replaced the sounddrivers
with latest alsa sounddrivers 0.5.9 (worked not with earlier versions),
now the sound is working great. Even the Lucent winmodem is working with
a module I got from the internet (ltmod.o). 32Mb is a little bit on the
low side ,I think mine is underpowered in that area too, But then again
I'm a developer of medical image manipulation programs and I'm used to
lots of ram. To give a better answer, when I boot my laptop with Linux
(dual boot) using helix gnome (windowmanager sawfish), it's using 24MB
of the ram. Then the videocard is using 4MB, that is together 28 MB, so
you would have 4Mb of free ram. Don't forget that the recommended
minimum ram for windows98 is also 64 Mb, and that is a toy OS IMHO.

I've also a 6GB harddisk, my configuration looks like this:
2 GB windows 98
2 GB linux
2 GB fat16 partition for data, recognized both by windows98 and Linux

first thing to do is to get the 3c509 out of the PnP mode.
3com has 2 installation diskettes on their site. boot from your windows
bootdisk and use the second 3com install disk to run 3c5x9cfg.exe. make
sure you disable pnp and reboot. first write down the IRQ and IO
settings!

second thing to do is to setup your internet-settings in RH. i don't
remember what the programme is called, but it's that handy config tool
that comes with RedHat. (what's it called again?)
remember to fill in the io-adress like this: io=0x300 (substitute 300
with the actual io. IRQ is optional as you will see.

if you filled it al in correctly, you should be able to ping your
localhost (no response? NiC is not properly installed, check the io).

good luck!

Niels

This is for the Highpoint and Promise ones...

Step one: Get the latest kernel (currently 2.3.51 but 2.4 will have it)

Step two: Compile and install

Step Three: Your hda will be hde unless you compile the pci ide controller as ide0 and
ide1 adn motherboard ones aas ide2 and ide3 so you will have to change lilo and fstab.

Step Four: Reboot and watch it work if you did everything right.

Pop in a windows 98 boot disk and boot up.
type in "fdisk /mbr"

This i think rebuilds the mbr.

Hope this helps.

Did you use Xconfigurator and then set up the monitor manually from
*within*
Xconfigurator?
It offers to probe your settings - let it, and then it alerts if
something
is wrong so you can "keep trying" till you have an ok result.
Start it as root, of course.

Woe is me! My 3 month old P5A only has 512 K of L2 cache! ;-((

Not sure what you current budget is, but DON'T spend any money on this for parts
that you can't re-use in a better system down the road, as this pile of spare
parts isn't really worth it? (perhaps as a dedcated Linux router/firewall
maybe?)
Start by looking at the application end of it...What do you need or want
this machine to be able to do? If you really need to hammer nails, then "any
old saw" won't really do the job, no matter how much you spend to have it
sharpened...

I build, and have built many low cost machinesas a hobby, and for non-profit
organizations, and I think I may be ready to throw away stuff more advanced that
that, 'cause the support overhead just isn't worth the time it takes to get it
running. Email me if you want specific recommendations, as I've found many
sources for "near Trailing Edge" but still usable parts, that will work well
without the headaches.
