Isdn Installing - info needed

1999-12-25 Thread Ishai Parasol

Hello

I'm looking for all info there is on the web (howto's, mini's, active usenet
groups and mailing lists, etc.) about installing isdn card over RH 6.1
system. I'm using isa tas100 card so i'm also looking for info about isapnp.
If any one uses this card please contact me. I tried looking myself for this
info but most of it is very old and the usenet groups are mostly in a deep
comma.

Thanks,
Ishai Parasol

Ayal Sharon: I tried to reply to you but hotmail kicked the message

still on-topic.

the way the installation helps you decide on the configuration, the way
it eases upgrading software or drivers over time, the way the GUI menues
get updated or not when new software is installed, the way the packages
are configured to work together, the central configuration tool they
provide to save you learning about the 30-40 config files and their
formats you would edit directly otherwise, and the easiness of adding
new hardware cards support to the system. (plus other small differences
ofcourse :-)

Emacs hs grown from being an editor to an entire work environment. HTML
is just one of the many things it does :-)

yap, SuSE is most probably a good start. I have CDs here of their last
version, which will update itself yo the latest online.

linuxdoc.org, like everything else.

pretty much, you make sure you have the spare room (overwrite an empty
partition or resize with Partition magic) and the installation-script
will ask you what to do, and you will easely get it to install right. be
sure to have the root partition (or a small 10-20 meg one used as
/boot) is within the first 1024 cylinders of the disk you install
on. that's the only trick.

I think we also (should) cover this in the list's FAQ, I hope you all
read it.

The Next Linux meeting, 7/1/2000

1999-12-25 Thread Ira Abramov

I'd like to thank all the helpers again on the last event, and to inform
you of the next one. I have reserved Class 4 (a bit smaller, I hope we
all fit in :-) for Friday Jan 7th at 11:00. after a round of
introductions and exchanging Y2K survival horror stories (if any) we
will have a lecture about the open() system call, along with "live"
dissection of its sources in the Linux kernel, it may be of some
interest to students taking the course on OS design no doubt, as it
takes you through a journey of the filesystem, memory management,
devices and other sections of the Linux kernel code.

After a round of enthusiastic responses, I am even considering making it
a bi-weekly meeting each month, some lectures for Linux/unix newbies to
intermediates about products, languages and environments, and the other
more for code hackers and programmers like the above. contact me for
more info or to sugest lecture ideas you would like to have featured, or
would like to volunteer yourself to talk about.

everybody: pass this around ofcourse among friends, so we can have an
idea of the type of audience we will have in future lectures.

Vadik: if you can, please open another mailing list for
linux-il-announce so people not on the list will still be informed of
events (no need to be a Linux-il member to come and enjoy the talks!)

write me back to:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] --- (not my regular address!)

to tell me you will show up (we need to know if there are more than 35
people coming, so we can arrange a bigger room in time) and also drop me
1-2 lines about what you would like to see in those meetings in the
future, so we can better tune them to the audience!

Thanks, and have a happy New Year!

That ``thread'' started when Moran Zavdi incorrectly described the
problem described in that advisory. After being corrected, he forwarded
the entire thing from bugtraq to the list to prove that he was right.
Later, the author of that advisory later released another (more thorough)
version of the advisory, which is what Ely forwarded here.

Point being: None of this would have happened had people not
thoughtlessly forwarded stuff from bugtraq to the list.

I wasn't specifically trying to deal with Ely; that's what private
email is for. But before the list gets flooded with forwards, I
thought it was time to object, so that other would-be forwarders would
reconsider their position.

Um, that's not why nc is better than telnet for ``debugging
protocols''. From the telnet man page: ``When connecting to ports
other than the telnet port, telnet(1) does not attempt telnet
protocol negotiations.''

lets understand something.
you all can argue as much as you want.
you all can write emails on emails fighting with each other.
the fact is you all argued so much i have lots of unnread emails and its not
really bother me.
another fact is that i wasnt incorrect. all i did was forward important
problem. and this was made due request from more than one people here who
said he care about linux security.
you can say i am wrong.
you can say i dont know what i talk about.
you can say what you feel like.
but if we look at the facts again we will see that the forwad i made was
talking on bug that hackers do take advantage of.
and they did.
another fact is that i was published the url and not whole article.

why the hell i bother respond it anyway
you not suposed replay this if you didnt get the point.

Well.. ofcourse the quotations are not in the file... my point is i'm trying
to set up my ISDN card.
when i used a modem i set all the things up for the modem and then
configured the resolv.conf. nothing else.
here it gives me some major problems.
does localhost nameserver 127.0.0.1 must be in resolv.conf? can you guide me
through all the files i need to changed after a clean installation of RH for
dialup connection? (i'll install my modem again only to check if it works)

1) I would try to follow the PPP-HOWTO. It will help RH users since this is
what the writer used to have
2) I believe that in regular desk top configuration, localhost nameserver
127.0.0.1 has not have to be in resolv.conf.

[21:24:29 /tmp]$ cat /etc/resolv.conf
domain israsrv.net.il
nameserver 192.115.0.100
nameserver 192.115.3.100
[21:24:40 /tmp]$

Ofcourse I am getting the "wrong" answer when I trying to nslookup localhost
but it does not seems to break anything:

[21:24:40 /tmp]$ nslookup 127.0.0.1
Server: ns1.israsrv.net.il
Address: 192.115.0.100

Name:localhost.israsrv.co.il
Address: 127.0.0.1

[21:28:41 /tmp]$ nslookup localhost
Server: ns1.israsrv.net.il
Address: 192.115.0.100

Name:localhost.israsrv.net.il
Address: 127.0.0.1

[21:29:40 /tmp]$ grep localhost /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost loopback
::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
[21:30:07 /tmp]$

Hi,

I had some problems with my ISDN card (it is not tas100 :(( ).

The info, that can be found on http://www.isdn4linux.de/leafsite/ is

There is a lot of talk around here about what
is list-related and what isn't (and obviously
this is not a security oriented list), but since
I brought up the original issue a few days ago,
I thought I'd response. So...

Do yourself a favour and do not apply this patch,
the problem is exploitable through UDP as well,
fixing ping is useless (it does not address the
real problem).

Use this instead:

Other than /etc/nsswitch.conf , there is also /etc/host.conf . you should
make sure that it contains:
order hosts, bind
(which means: look for a name at /etc/hosts before asking the name
server).

Also: have you tried using linuxconf?
