I have a new Chicony laptop. I've managed to install RedHat 6.0, however X refuses to start. I downloaded the latest X, which supposedly supports the graphics card (a Silicon Motion LynxEM SMI 711) but couldn't get it to work. I tried both using the new frame buffer device and "standard" x, but neither seem to work. What would really make my day is the /etc/XF86Config from someone with this (or similar) laptop model. Otherwise, any other pointers on running linux on laptop will be appreciated, especially since I haven't messed yet with neither pcmcia (for the network and modem cards) nor apm. look, i know this is not an english speaking mailing list... that's why i would not complain about people's grammar (even though that annoys me, too). but, you don't need to know how to speak a language well in order to use a spell checker! and because this is a non-english speaking mailing list, then the least people could do in order to be more clearly understood (especially by people who have a hard time understanding, as it is) is to run their email through a spell checker!!! and a person who is offering a job should be ashamed of himself if he doesn't spell things right! i'm sure he wouldn't accept you for the position he's offering if your resume was full of spelling mistakes so he can show the same respect back. yes, respect! imgin if my hol email was riten lik thes. yoo woodnt lik thet, wood yoo? it's kind of hard to take someone like that seriously. isn't it? -Original Message- From: Omer Zak [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, February 29, 2000 19:22 To: Linux-IL mailing list Subject: [Anti-spellingflame FLAME] RE: Job Offers At Gizmoz Inc. Re: [iglu] Two problems with partitions -- another solution?
If I may suggest another solution... Boris asked: I decided to install RedHat Linux 6.1 on the E: partition. The installation was fine but the problem is that after the installation the programs that the F: partition became into E: partition so none of the programs installed there have run. And Ira replies: that's hardly a Linux problem, it's a Windows partition game. the only product that I know of that solves this is Partition magic, for about [...] Partition magic again. it has a "magic mover" tool that will move binaries around and update all their .ini files and locations in the registry for you, and actually much more. once again, these are ALL windows questions, they should not be posted [...] 1. Solution I've a tiny DOS program called Part I'm crazy about -- saved my ass (read: HD) more than once! You can edit the partitions table on the MBR with it, to fix errors, edit partition sizes, create/delete/erase/clone, and even format FAT/FAT32 partitions with it! Colorful GUI (char-mode) interface too! (Part.exe, Ranish's Partition Manager; maybe some Linux tools do it (easily) too?) Oh, to answer Boris' problem: If these partitions are logical, you can edit the chaining-order... ah, too tired to explain now -- it's all in LILO's readme... (Order of the four primaries in that table can be changed too, but I suspect OSs sort them by cylinder, disregarding.) eMail me for details. (I might summarize this and simil stuff as a "tutorial/guide", when Chen'll say the ZWiki is stable?) 2. Linux/win? I disagree, Ira, if you don't mind, that this is an exclusive winbugs issue... Re: SuSe 6.3
I only can agree and strongly advice everybody to - either boot from the 2nd CD (for textmode install) or - boot from the bootdisk (also textmode install) Only in the textmode install can you choose your packages in detailed level and read the info which is included on each package. At the end you can use SaX to config your X etc. Much better and more detailed. The book is also good reading for beginners, since it explains a lot (though it is NOT a complete Linux manual) and most of all explains the special things about SuSE. Schlomo PS: SuSE is not a beginners distro, but for medium till advanced people it's very good.
