Confusing Mirrors
I am looking for a version of glib >= 1.2.7 and gcc >= 2.95. I started browsing the mirrors at ftp://ftp.iglu.org.il/pub/distributions/, and quickly got confused. I remember that there was some stench about gcc version 2.96 or something. Where can I RTFM the authoritative information about versions to be downloaded and from where (preferably in Israel) to download them? The up-to-date versions of glib and gcc are needed for an i686 Linux system originally installed from RedHat 6.2 CD-ROM. --- Omer WARNING TO SPAMMERS: see at http://www.zak.co.il/spamwarning.html = To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Shared memory
Hi List, I'd appreciate if someone could finally explain me: 1. What does the 'Shared memory' reading (/proc/meminfo) indicate? Simple IPC shared memory? 2. If two processes owned by the same user load a shared library, does the library load twice or only once? hello, after the myriad woes my old laptop has inflicted on me, i decided to get a new one and have my sights set on an ibm thinkpad t20. if anyone has such a beast, i would love to hear personal experiences with it. is it comfortable? does the battery last in real usage? does the kernel oops once a day or never? is the uptime measured in minutes or months? thanks in advance for any info. p.s. if anyone knows where i can buy it in israel, please let me know. -- mulix linux/reboot.h: #define LINUX_REBOOT_MAGIC1 0xfee1dead = To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hebrew
Hello I have RH 6.2, KDE 2, kernel 2.4.0, and I would like to install hebrew TTF fonts from windows, and to be able to write in hebrew. Untill now I had elmars fonts, and the hebrew package at KDE and it was nice. But now I would like to put not-ugly fonts (sorry elmar fonts' creators), and to be able to write hebrew with my hebrew keboard. I copied the ttf fonts from /mnt/hd/windows/fonts to /fonts, and made everything by Tzafrir's explanation at IOL's linux forum. But when I look at the fonts in my system, I see nothing new... Does someone know why I can't install the ttf-hebrew-windows-fonts? And how can I write in hebrew? Estimating disk activity
Howdy, How do I tell remotely how heavy is the disk activity on a Linux box? CPU usage doesn't say anything, since low CPU usage could mean either light load or that everybody is blocked waiting for disk I/O. Checking whether processes are blocked won't distinguish between those that await disk I/O and those that await socket input, for instance. My primary goal is to determine whether disk usage is a performance bottleneck in a web server (Apache+PHP+MySQL). In case the solution is driver-specific (low-level counters?), I'm using RAID1 on SCSI, kernel 2.2. Don't forget that unlike most other browsers, all the widgets of the mozilla browser are in fact presented by its layout engine. As a sample page, see: http://forums.nana.co.il/files/82976_logical.html note that I couldn't set the font for the text box, and I couldn't make the window title use hebrew text (I use an iso8859-8 font for window titles), but I haven't taken much time configuring this. > > btw when gtk will be bidi too, won't it make problems ? It works now on hebrew windows, which is even a bigger problem, because hebrew windows (at least win9x, IIRC from the talk there was with the guy from the ibm bidi mozilla team) doesn't give an option to disable the bidi support, whereas gtk will give an option to diable bidi support. -- Tzafrir Cohen mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.technion.ac.il/~tzafrir = To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I am renovating my 3-bedroom aptartment and want to install proper wiring to support interfacing of computers among my bedrooms and the living-room. I presently have one machine, but expect to get at least one more (for my son) within a year. I have two areas in which I could use guidance: 1. What kind of wiring or cables should I have the contractor install, given that it will run past some air-conditioning machinery? What kind of patch panel or other arrangement will I need? 2. Can you suggest a place in Jerusalem where I can purchase the requisite material (cables, connectors, etc.) for this project. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated, including HOWTOs and tutorials on the subject. Thank you. Large HD and VMWare's raw partitions
One of my Linux system has a slave disk which is 20GB. (0)root@myhost:/~# fdisk /dev/hdc The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 2646. There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024, and could in certain setups cause problems with: 1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO) 2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK) Command (m for help) (0)root@myhost:~/ The disk partitions at the begining of the disk are Linux ext2 filesystems. Four partitions at the end of the disk are FAT16/msdos. The DOS partitions have been defined in /etc/fstab but at bootup time, these file systems are not getting mounted. I cannot even mount them manually. When I tried to mount them, mount -t auto /dev/hdc5 /msdos then the filesystem is mounted as a ext2 filesystems. When I try to mount them as msdos filesystems, mount -t msdos /dev/hdc5 /msdos then the following message appears: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdc5, or too many mounted file systems The goal is to create a raw partition for VMWare on the /dev/hdc5 partition and install NT over it rely on M$ systems. How can I create raw partitions for VMware on large HDs and mount them? Thank you in advance. Debian Mirror
My children, I have been bitten by that bug again and, having currently just enough disk space, am downloading Debian to my home machine as fast as a 128kb/CIR0 would allow. As soon as the thingy is down, I will create debian.bard.org.il, allowing you lot to leech .deb by the score. It is currently at 2.5Gb and downloading. I am pulling a full Intel tree (i.e. main, contrib, non-free and non-US for potato, woody and sid), a full sparc tree (ditto) and a full Alpha tree (ditto). And, before some unking soul asks, yes - I do have a sparc. It is a working and VERRRY slow SS5/85. It compiles a kernel in only 83 minutes. If anyone has an AXe he wants to contribute, I am nothing loth, 'wot since I am trying to make ReiserFS work on sparc. And no, I do not have a WORKING Alpha. I have a NON-working Alpha. An EBM23 SBC, no enclosure, no memory. Any help in this department would be appreciated, too ;-). This is the rule number which caused the packet log. Calling it "count" is indeed a bit misleading.
