Re: translate a pdf file from german to english

2011-05-23 Thread sara fink
Thanks to everyone who helped me with the ideas to convert it. I ended up
using translate.google.com where it allowed to convert even a pdf. I had to
split the file in 4 because otherwise it left lots of untraslated pages. I
splitted it each 13 pages. Then I copied and pasted the translation in word
processor.

I also had to extract the images and add them. The option of the pdf viewer
that sends a link didn't work. I think it was due to the limit of 10MB file
(although mine had 9MB).

As usual, Stan is insightful. My apartment has a Bauknecht washing
machine, for which the instruction manual is available only in German.
Even the importer could not get for me an English or Hebrew manual.
However, a very similar machine is rebranded as Whirlpool and sold in
the United States. The Whirlpool manual, in English, is also pertinent
to the Bauknecht washer.

Manufacturers of major appliances generally market their product
internationally, which mostly requires user instructions in English. I
have an Italian washing machine that came with the manufacturer's user
guide in Italian, Hungarian, and a number of more exotic languages, plus
the importer's badly written Hebrew translation -- nothing in English,
because the item is not marketed outside Israel (because nowhere else is
it customary for washing machines to heat their own water). I had to
induce the importer to get me an English user guide for a model which is
virtually identical with mine save for the water heater. I have also
done similarly with a German vacuum cleaner. You could probably get the
manufacturer's user manual for your dishwasher by approaching the local
agent of the manufacturer.

Hi Gadi

Thanks a lot. I did that and it translated but not the whole document. The
document had 52 pages and it translated until page 14. Very weird. I might
try to split the document. Also the document is formatted into 2 columns

Uhh... it needed more salt. I didn't know dishwashers used salt. My bad.

For those who saw Google I/O, I'm waiting for the day when my dishwasher
will have Android @ Home support and can tell me wirelessly (and in
English!) what it needs :)

[For those that didn't, Google are launching a project where home
devices can communicate wirelessly, either via wifi or if not via
Google's own wireless protocol, with a central hub running Android. As
I understood it, everything will be open sourced and no licenses

You can actually do this directly from Google Translate!

After eventually finding a manual for my dishwasher in German, I used
Google Translate to do this and finally figured out what all the beeping
meant :)

Hi,
You can use pdf2txt (

to convert it to text and then feed it to one of the translation engines

Hi Sara,
I did not understand where the bigger problem lies - in reading or writing.
Reading - Sometimes you can grab the text from a pdf (then maybe put in in
google translate). This does not work with old PDFs. You would need an OCR
program for that.
Writing - Using close source (acrobat writer, costs money), you can change a
pdf WYSIWUG. (supposing you got drawings and you want to write around them).
I am not aware of a FOSS solution.
