Anyone know where this __ns_name_unpack@@GLIBC_2.1 sysmbol comes from, or better still, how to get rid of it? Sak, I don't think it is a php problem. First have you tried just installing the rpms for php4 from the redhat site or the upgrade site( say fr.rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/redhat/7.0/updates. You could also get the src rpms and build them on your machines. I know they contain redhat-specific patches. I have had no problem building php on RH7. My guess is that somehow you're glibc upgrades got botched. First did you run ldconfig after upgrading; that might help. The symbol you're looking for "__ns_name_unpack" occurs in several libraries, for example libresolv.so.2,libnss_dns.so On this RH7 box, which I update all the time if I do #rpm -qf /usr/lib/libnss_dns.so glibc-devel-2.2-12 #nm /usr/lib/libnss_dns.so|grep __ns_name_unpack U __ns_name_unpack@@GLIBC_2.1 You can also try using "objdump -T" on some of these libs as well. Im looking for books that will help me understand the concepts and design decisions, rather than show me the source code. Since im not a programmer but a simple *nix system administrator, Lions' Commentary on Unix probably is not what im looking for here. Books that cover the *nix kernel in general (like BSD or SysV) rather than a specific implementation (like Solaris kernel) would also be preferred. Any and all suggestions are more than welcome, Thanks in advance. You might want to look up the stuff in "The Bell System Technical Journal". You may need to consult a good technical library to get these, possibly on inter-library loan. This is a two-volume issue and you will probably want both volumes. I no longer remember what is in each volume. M.D. McIlroy, E.N.Pinson, and B.A. Tague "Unix Time-Sharing System Forward", The Bell System Technical Journal, July -Aug 1978, vol 57, number 6 part 2. Thompson, "Unix Implementation", "The Bell System Technical Journal," vol 57, No. 6, July-August 1978. I have "the Linux Kernel book" by Card, Dumas, and Mevel from John Wiley (even contains Red Hat Linux 5.0 CD-ROM [obsolete] in the back). You might want to borrow it before you buy it because it may not be quite what you want. -- .~. Can I recover the "old" version of this file. How? Thank you as it is a very critical data file. Fairly likely not, unless you are exceedingly lucky. When a file is "overwritten," this tends to result in the formerly occupied blocks getting tossed onto some form of "free list," eventually to be reclaimed and used for some other purpose. If it has been a while since the "overwriting," and you have made quite a lot of changes to files on the filesystem involved, then it is fairly likely that the old version has been overwritten. If that be the case, recovery methods likely involve fairly ridiculous extremes like hiring in security engineers to use things like electron microscopes to pull signals off the hard drive. Down that road lies costs of thousands of dollars... More likely, you've lost the data, with no practical recourse. This is a painful lesson that demonstrates the _necessity_ of doing regular backups of important data. There's a sad story (perhaps, but probably not, apocryphal) of a graduate student that was nearing completion on a Ph.D thesis; shortly before submission, there was a fire that burned his apartment, along with the text of the thesis, as well as all his notes. There was nothing to be done, as his thesis efforts became _ashes_. He could not muster the funds or the emotional effort to restart the process, and had to give up on the degree. I had a disk crash, destroying the whole text, at about that same point in my M.Sc, just as I was finalizing things. Fortunately, I was _already_ paranoid, and had enough backups stashed away in different cities for it to be a non-issue. The main presentation will made by Jozef Skvarcek, Ph.D,, who is an end user of Beowulf. He has designed Beowulf clusters and has designed and coded applications to make use of them. Beowulf is a freely available open-source add-on to Linux which provides support for multi-node clustering. With such a cluster, a group of inexpensive machines can appear to act as a single much larger system. Depending on the size of the workload, the design of the application, and the horsepower and number of cluster members, mainframe computing power can be achieved. We also have another guest speaker, Andrew Flesch from TurboLinux. Andrew will briefly describe TurboLinux's commercial closed-source multi-platform (Unix, Linux, NT) clustering solution, EnFuzion, and describe how EnFuzion cluster implementations differ from Beowulf cluster implementations.
