alternative access to files at support.dell.com? - looking for SAS 5/iR firmware...

2010-01-29 Thread PJF
Greetings,

I'm looking for the latest firmware for the SAS 5/iR RAID controller on a
PowerEdge 860, the RHEL5 binary version where I can apply the update from
within the OS.

(support.dell.com is completely down for me and I can't browse to locate the
file)

Anyone know the direct FTP link?

Thanks in advance!

Poweredge servers running in low temperature environment

2010-01-29 Thread Philip Tait
We are installing a couple of PE servers (2900 and R710) at our summit
facility. Ambient temperature can be as low as 1C (dewpoint at -15C).

Apart from annoying "low ambient temperature" warnings from OMSA, is
there anything to be concerned about? Is it feasible to adjust fan RPM
settings?

Thanks for any comments/suggestions,

Hmm. Does that mean there were problems with SUU 6.2.0?

The OM 6.2 server update utility (SUU) disc that was released in December was
pulled and replaced with a new version last week. The DRAC5 firmware going from
1.5 to 1.51 was one of the changes. I just updated the yum repo yesterday to
reflect the new SUU disc.

Thanks,
Jeff

Firmware repository out of date

2010-01-29 Thread Erinn Looney-Triggs
Looks like the firmware repo is falling out of date. This happened
before when it was unofficial. Maybe now that it is official something
can be done?

Anyway two examples:

Drac5 firmware:
repo version 1.50
Support.dell version 1.51

sas backplane firmware:
repo version 1.05
support.dell version 1.07

The overall hardware segment support for Linux is quite spotty, and IMHO
Dell is one of the brighter spots. In addition to their active Linux
support for their server and laptop product lines, they also contribute,
for instance, Matt. Who pretty much wrote DKMS, contributes to
maintenance of a number of kernel modules, and sits on the Fedora Projects
board. He's wired in pretty high at Dell these days, and I trust what he
says here.

Re: Lifecycle Controller not-so slick IMO.

2010-01-29 Thread ndegz
I tried using the local ftp repository but that doesn't work on 1.0 which is
why I have to upgrade to 1.3 and then point it to the local ftp repository.
Does DMC include a repository manager or do we have to use DRM?

What OS are you running? Not having a new-enough version of RPM and
glibc makes me think RHEL3 vintage, which isn't supported by DUPS
anymore; RHEL4+, SLES 10+ are.

Dell uses and contributes to open source software in a lot of ways -
including using the SBLIM and openwsman stack on Linux for future
systems management projects. The iDRAC itself is running Linux (yes,
source code is available, minus any non-open-source components of
course). But there are also components which are not open source
licensed, for a variety of reasons (strategic choice, license by the
authors if not Dell, ...). Over time we have made more and more of
our systems management software either open source or at least more
Linux-friendly, and I expect that trend to continue.

There is a (Windows, yeah, sorry...) tool, Repository Manager [1],
which can create a local (network) copy of the content from
ftp.dell.com, which you can then point Lifecycle Controller at. This
at least lets you avoid downloading the same content repeatedly over
the LAN. It also gives you the ability to choose when to update (to
what baselines), and to what levels, rollback, and the like.

Re: Lifecycle Controller not-so slick IMO.

2010-01-29 Thread Bas van der Vlies
Just a question before spending a lot of time to setup this process for
Linux OS (the examples are for windows). Does someone have scripts they can
share for automatically update the firmware for M610? We can setup our
local ftp mirror that is not a problem.

Thanks in advance
