Name resolution is via an IPCop box static lease and hosts entries. Boxes can be pinged by name, I can ssh to them and confirm it's hostname, and that mac address of the ethernet card and IP address match with what IPCop shows. Desktop sharing is turned on on both jupiter and neptune. Occasionally I need to view jupiter's desktop, from mercury all attempts to establish a vnc connection via either KRDC or Remote Desktop Viewer, by name or by IP address, give me neptune's desktop. My guess remains as it being some vmware weirdness, but I'm out of specific ideas and my googling hasn't found anything useful beyond ssh, hostnames etc as per the above, can anyone suggest steps to resolve this? OT: Cabling to a shed
I'm wanting to connect up my shed for power (3 phase), water and data (phone network). I have (with significant help) dug the trench to the shed and will be organising the connections in the next few weeks. However, if I run the network cables next to the power cables I'll have issues, yes? Is there any way around that? Can I get shielded ducting for underground use (at reasonable cost)? (I was initially just intending to run the cat5e cable through irrigation hose until I remembered the potential interference issues.) Kerry
Re: OT: Cabling to a shed
Thanks for all the help here, Just to clarify, the shed is to be multi-use, I intend to work on cars out there so will obviously need to have the workshop manuals up on the computer screen ... (3 phase is for my next compressor ...) Also, this is on a lifestyle block so set up is a little different to a suburban situation. The power and water are coming from the pump shed that has the water pump for the house supply and meter box (separate fuse box in the house). It is about 8-10 metres from the shed and a similar distance from the house. (I will still need another trench for the data connection to the house but that should be easier.) I'll check with the electrician but may try to go power, water, data. I had intended using 50mm irrigation tube for the data. I still have an account with a wholesale irrigation place. 5e was because I have some solid core already, but yeah, I don't want to dig this trench again! If I can't set up the duct to allow easy replacement then I'll get some cat 6 or 7. Can some one tell me the difference between STP vs UTP? Kerry
Re: OT: Cabling to a shed

debugging gdm session errors
Hi all I've just upgraded to Ubuntu Jaunty on three machines but am having difficulty with one machine. The problem is that after logging in, I just get a black screen with the mouse pointer, which I can move around but get no other response. I've had no luck finding anything on this error via google, the reported bugs, or on the Ubuntu forum so I've been trying to do more diagnosis before reporting it as a bug. I can ctrl+alt+F1 to get a terminal screen and I can log in via ssh. I can log in to a failsafe gnome session but this just gives me a terminal window with no window manager (I can run one graphical programme but it has no window controls). So far I have found that the scripts in xsession.d all seem to be being executed: Synergy, which I have loading from a script in xsession.d, runs fine in any position I put it in in that directory - though I can't put it after 99x11-common_start How would I progress from here?
Re: debugging gdm session errors
Online upgrade (8.10 - 9.04). Worked well on two out of three desktop machines (and a server). I have a copy of the 9.04 alt disk, but would rather not re-install if I can help it, this old laptop is not as well partitioned for this as my more recent ones. I reconfigured X but that isn't the problem - all the graphical screens prior including login all work fine, it's somehow just not getting as far as the desktop.

I too have found issues with netmanager. I generally use it in roaming mode on my laptop and it is wonderful for 90% of what I do. At work I connect to a docking station and it connects nicely for me. At home I start up and it connects to my wireless network. The only issue is when I use openvpn at home to access work. After a couple of minutes I cannot refer to work machines by name, I have to use their ip addresses - but it won't use the home internet gateway it still tries to use the work gateway through openvpn (which is blocked of course). 2008/9/2 David Lowe [EMAIL PROTECTED]: I had similar problems with a laptop. Re: Help needed recovering a lost directory structure
If your disk is dying then you should replace it. It's only going to get worse. So I assume you're just trying to get some important data off it? If the physical problem with the disk is related to the mechanism rather than the surface of the disks, then you could try putting the disk in the freezer. Sounds bizarre I know. But I have successfully used this technique to recover important data off a stuffed hard disk. You need to put the drive in a plastic bag to limit the condensation then a few hours in the freezer and the previously locked up disk runs for quite some time. However, this is only useful for getting data off the disk - it doesn't repair the disk so it will die again sooner rather than later. YMMV Kerry 2008/7/17 David Merriman [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Hi there, A few days ago, a message popped up on my screen, saying that the BIOS's S.M.A.R.T. program had decided that one of my hard disks was dying (I don't recall the exact wording), and sure enough, I could no longer access one of my partitions.

Sorry Zane, can't quite follow from the posts - are you using server or player? I'd really suggest server - it's much more reliable particularly on the networking side. Does the network have all three options set up? I'd suggest turning off the options you are not using. Is the machine you are trying to access the host? As an exception to the last, don't try to access the host via anything but the host only network, for some reason it's incredibly slow via bridged or nat - your application is likely to time out. Thanks Rex, yes that's a much better way of doing it. Still having difficulty though - I think its either with quotes or semi-colons now... As I understand it, ; are required between statements that are in places where only one statement is expected. So, keeping it to it's simplest form: SYNHOST=caalt04 ping -c 1 $SYNHOST if [ $? -eq 0 ] ; then echo Synergy connected else echo Synergy NOT connected fi Returns: PING caalt04.caa.local (192.168.0.183) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from caalt04.caa.local (192.168.0.183): icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.172 ms --- caalt04.caa.local ping statistics --- 1 packets transmitted, 1 received, 0% packet loss, time 0ms rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 0.172/0.172/0.172/0.000 ms Synergy connected : not founddefault: 11: else Synergy NOT connected So the ping command works but the if statement doesn't - the else isn't recognised so it's doing both commands.

Re: A possible heads-up for those using Linux on laptops ?
Hey, thanks for that. My count is over 170K - with a specified life of 600K it wasn't going to last very long! I've implemented the solution, even though I don't really understand how it works. Re: Virtulization question.
Hopefully this is a frank discussion on issues with the two systems not a vm distro war. I'm a heavy user of vmware server, but certainly agree that it is not without issues! On 17/10/2007, Vik Olliver [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Well, sorry Volker but I've had plenty. I'm using - or trying to use 4 per VM. The system startup messages say they're eth0-3, and by the time I get to a system prompt (this is on stock Debian etch, BTW) they're eth4-7 and don't work. Never had that sort of trouble, but there are some issues with vmware networks: - When using bridging to the host's network, I've had issues with connecting to a samba share on the host - it is extremely (unusably) slow. The only way to get good performance is to also have a host only network. - For some reason when starting up the vmware service seems to start auto start vms before setting up the networks. I have to manually reset the network on my virtual firewall every time I restart. - Disabling the vmware dhcp is a bit of a mission on a linux host (there's a nice gui for windows hosts.) i know there were some others that have caused me grief over time too.
Re: Virtulization question.
vmware server is also free and a better choice than player for most applications. I use it quite extensively for windows (all with valid licences!) on ubuntu hosts. It is now easy to install on ubuntu, don't know how it would be on Fedora. I've had variable success with usb. The implementation is a bit awkward. usb drives are pretty straightforward, usb bluetooth was particularly unsuccessful - I think in this case the (ubuntu) host kept trying to take back control of the bluetooth adapter. I've not used serial, but the option to set up that hardware is there. Kerry. I have heard of qemu and Xen what other applications are available to achieve this. vmware can do this -- it's not open source but the Player is free of charge, and the config files you need can be created by http://easyvmx.com qemu will probably be fine too :-) -jim

Re: ADSL VPN Router combo?
The linksys ag241 says it does this, not sure of pricing though. However, I've had no success connecting to it from an ipcop box. Folder synchronisation
I am wanting to periodically synchronise two folders containing documents and spreadsheets. Unfortunately the (remote) one is on a windows server. It is accessible via samba. Is this what rsync is usually for? Is there a way to get it to work for a windows machine (windows rsync daemon?). Am I going at this the wrong way? Kerry

Thanks Roy, Unison looks like exactly what I'm after. On 20/09/2007, Roy Britten [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: rsync is one-way. Unison http://www.cis.upenn.edu/~bcpierce/unison/ uses the rsync protocol for two-way syncing and in my limited experience works pretty well. Roy.
