Hi, I have a puzzling situation with connecting to a remote desktop on a
 local network. 3 (k)ubuntu boxes - mercury (lucid - a desktop machine),
jupiter (8.04.4 LTS) and neptune (a virtual machine under VMWare Server 2
 running on jupiter).

Name resolution is via an IPCop box static lease and hosts entries. Boxes
can be pinged by name, I can ssh to them and confirm it's hostname, and that
mac address of the ethernet card and IP address match with what IPCop shows.

Desktop sharing is turned on on both jupiter and neptune.

Occasionally I need to view jupiter's desktop, from mercury all attempts to
establish a vnc connection via either KRDC or Remote Desktop Viewer, by name
or by IP address, give me neptune's desktop.

My guess remains as it being some vmware weirdness, but I'm out of specific
ideas and my googling hasn't found anything useful beyond ssh, hostnames etc
as per the above, can anyone suggest steps to resolve this?

 Cheers,
 Roger

Disk3 is 1TB - but is over half full with various virtual machines.

When I run the ubuntu install from cd, no matter what I've tried, it seems

I don't want this partition touched.

Can anyone please tell me how to get it installed to Disk2?

I'm wanting to connect up my shed for power (3 phase), water and data
(phone network). I have (with significant help) dug the trench to
the shed and will be organising the connections in the next few weeks.

However, if I run the network cables next to the power cables I'll
have issues, yes? Is there any way around that? Can I get shielded
ducting for underground use (at reasonable cost)? (I was initially
just intending to run the cat5e cable through irrigation hose until I
remembered the potential interference issues.)

Re: OT: Cabling to a shed

Thanks for all the help here,

Just to clarify, the shed is to be multi-use, I intend to work on cars
out there so will obviously need to have the workshop manuals up on
the computer screen ... (3 phase is for my next compressor ...)

Also, this is on a lifestyle block so set up is a little different to
a suburban situation. The power and water are coming from the pump
shed that has the water pump for the house supply and meter box
(separate fuse box in the house). It is about 8-10 metres from the
shed and a similar distance from the house. (I will still need
another trench for the data connection to the house but that should be
easier.)

I'll check with the electrician but may try to go power, water, data.

I had intended using 50mm irrigation tube for the data. I still have
an account with a wholesale irrigation place.

5e was because I have some solid core already, but yeah, I don't want
to dig this trench again! If I can't set up the duct to allow easy
replacement then I'll get some cat 6 or 7.

Can some one tell me the difference between STP vs UTP?

I previously asked the sparky to change the house pump to a different

discernible effect.

As an aside, it's also possible to connect house and shed each to a
single phase, but a different one for load balancing. That'll probably
give you more noise between the buildings, as well as 380V, not 240V,
 between the wall outlets.

Disclaimer: I'm an electrical engineer, not a sparky.

Hi all

I've just upgraded to Ubuntu Jaunty on three machines but am having
difficulty with one machine. The problem is that after logging in, I
just get a black screen with the mouse pointer, which I can move
around but get no other response. I've had no luck finding anything
on this error via google, the reported bugs, or on the Ubuntu forum so
I've been trying to do more diagnosis before reporting it as a bug.

I can ctrl+alt+F1 to get a terminal screen and I can log in via ssh.

I can log in to a failsafe gnome session but this just gives me a
terminal window with no window manager (I can run one graphical
programme but it has no window controls).

So far I have found that the scripts in xsession.d all seem to be
being executed:
Synergy, which I have loading from a script in xsession.d, runs fine
in any position I put it in in that directory - though I can't put it
after 99x11-common_start

How would I progress from here?

getting as far as the desktop.

3D under vms is still just on the horizon and not mainstream yet.

That said, vmware workstation (the non free - in either sense version)
has had experimental support for 3D and the new vmware fusion on
macs has 3d support which appears to work well.

In both cases, as Volker says, this is support for a vm to use the
host's 3d hardware. So if the underlying hardware doesn't support 3d
then the vm will not either.

If your disk is dying then you should replace it. It's only going to
get worse. So I assume you're just trying to get some important data
off it?

If the physical problem with the disk is related to the mechanism
rather than the surface of the disks, then you could try putting the
disk in the freezer.

Sounds bizarre I know. But I have successfully used this technique to
recover important data off a stuffed hard disk.

You need to put the drive in a plastic bag to limit the condensation
then a few hours in the freezer and the previously locked up disk runs
for quite some time.

However, this is only useful for getting data off the disk - it
doesn't repair the disk so it will die again sooner rather than later.

YMMV

Back to the network issues:

Do other applications have any issues with the network?

It's not something silly like the windows firewall is it?

Does the network have all three options set up? I'd suggest turning
off the options you are not using.

Is the machine you are trying to access the host? As an exception to
the last, don't try to access the host via anything but the host only
network, for some reason it's incredibly slow via bridged or nat -
your application is likely to time out.

2. vmware's vmware-config.pl fails to build the packages it need under

Help with shell scripting

I'm getting the error that then is not being found.

This script was working before I pulled caalt04 out as a variable.
But I tidied up things at the same time, so may have messed it up

Re: Help with shell scripting

2008-04-16 Thread Kerry Mayes
Thanks Rex, yes that's a much better way of doing it.

Still having difficulty though - I think its either with quotes or
semi-colons now...

As I understand it, ; are required between statements that are in
places where only one statement is expected. So, keeping it to it's
simplest form:

SYNHOST=caalt04
ping -c 1 $SYNHOST
if [ $? -eq 0 ] ; then
   echo Synergy connected

else

   echo Synergy NOT connected

fi

Returns:

PING caalt04.caa.local (192.168.0.183) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from caalt04.caa.local (192.168.0.183): icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.172 ms

--- caalt04.caa.local ping statistics ---
1 packets transmitted, 1 received, 0% packet loss, time 0ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 0.172/0.172/0.172/0.000 ms
Synergy connected
: not founddefault: 11: else
Synergy NOT connected

So the ping command works but the if statement doesn't - the else
isn't recognised so it's doing both commands.

drwxr-xr-x 2 nobodynogroup 4096 2007-12-07 09:14 temp

What this means is that, if I create the directory under linux, I
can't then put anything in it!

I'm not sure where to start on this one. Is this likely to be:

1. A samba setting on the server
2. Something to do with mounting it on my workstation
3. A general setting on my workstation

Help?

Kerry.

Re: samba permissions

2007-12-06 Thread Kerry Mayes
I specifically selected cifs, didn't realise that it did things
differently (would this be easier with smbfs?)

I mount with this line in fstab:

//192.168.0.215/Company /mnt/company cifs
defaults,credentials=/home/netlogon/.smbpwdCAA 0 0

However, I have been wondering whether it would be better to set up
something by way of a login script that could be taylored to specific
users. That may be a bit of an aside.

These scripts are part of the netbeans + openoffice integration and

My editing of the scripts is a therefore a work-around to get someone

Many people would classify this behaviour as a security setting:
making the script author explicitly set PATH or specify the full path

shell script error

2007-11-26 Thread Kerry Mayes
The following shell script is producing an error saying that
basename is not found:

--
#!/bin/sh
# wrapper script for OOos SDK programs

LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/openoffice/program
/usr/lib/openoffice/sdk/linux/bin/`basename $0`.bin $@
-

Now, I'm a real shell script noob, but `basename $0` is supposed to
return the name of the file, right? Why would that fail?

I'm about to edit each of these 20 files to specifically include the
right name, but wondered if there was a better way to sort this issue.

Re: shell script error

2007-11-26 Thread Kerry Mayes
Netbeans is running it as part of the openoffice sdk addin.

I found basename (using which basename, thanks!) to be in /usr/bin
[ I had no idea it was a program being called by the script! ]

I altered the script from `basename $0` to `/usr/bin/basename $0` and
it works fine now. I did a quick script to copy a new version over
all the copies in the directory so have it all working (there are only
14 not 20, but still...)

Thanks heaps!

I'm going to try changing sh to bash and see if that fixes it too.
That might be easier for the developers to change as the permanent
fix.

 dependencies down the line.

install the c++ compiler first, and binutils if necessary, and then try

I don't think automatix updates things for the new kernels. I used it
under Edgy and it broke under Feisty, if I remember correctly it
didn't install everything needed to update for new kernels and you
might as well wait until the gutsy partner repository gets a gutsy

I suggest you install 1.04 as downloaded from vmware. Once
build-essential and xinetd is installed it just works.

Never had that sort of trouble, but there are some issues with
vmware networks:
- When using bridging to the host's network, I've had issues with
connecting to a samba share on the host - it is extremely (unusably)
slow. The only way to get good performance is to also have a host

- For some reason when starting up the vmware service seems to start
auto start vms before setting up the networks. I have to manually
reset the network on my virtual firewall every time I restart.

- Disabling the vmware dhcp is a bit of a mission on a linux host

i know there were some others that have caused me grief over time too.

vmware server is also free and a better choice than player for most
applications. I use it quite extensively for windows (all with valid
licences!) on ubuntu hosts. It is now easy to install on ubuntu,
don't know how it would be on Fedora.

I've had variable success with usb. The implementation is a bit
awkward. usb drives are pretty straightforward, usb bluetooth was
particularly unsuccessful - I think in this case the (ubuntu) host
kept trying to take back control of the bluetooth adapter.

I've not used serial, but the option to set up that hardware is there.
